About What do user trust levels do?:

Hello, I need to undestand what does "entering" mean in Trust Levels.
I thought that TL1 promotion was when the user POST at least 5 topic. frowning

In TL1, I've got some users who posts 2 topics and they got the promotion to TL1., so I believe that "entering" is like "reading"?

Can you help me to understand?
"Enter" is like "read" or "post" ?

When clicking in the window it jumps away.

The whole text box starts hopping away from your touch to the bottom of the screen and from the bottom back up to the top. It can take about 3 goes before it settled down.

And

It's a bit hard to reproduce reliably, but it's definitely not stable

Here is a screenshot:

I have been able to repro it a couple of times on my 6+

Create a new wiki topic via the api?

Is it possible to create a new topic with wiki=true?

I can't seem to figure out how to do it via the api. I've tried wiki=true, wiki[]=true to /posts/ and /posts/wiki and a couple of other things, but the only way I've been able to do it so far has been to create the topic first, get the ID, and then do another PUT with wiki=true. Which is ok, but just wondering if there is a way to set wiki=true when creating the topic.

Hamburger menu for RTL

There's an issue with the sliding hamburger menu in RTL. The menu appears in the middle of the screen at all times making the forum unfunctional. After pressing the hamburger menu it moves to the right place (in the left side of the screen because we are in RTL).
Here's how it looks like, the square in the middle of the screen is part of the hamburger menu!

Discourse security

I've read a couple threads on discourse web application security but haven't come across a topic the delves into if a WAF would help in the case of Discourse or not. I think it could be it really all depends on the developers I guess, I mean my firewall rules already have the fw_snort rules and is managed by a script that gets ran everyday, with the automatic management of IP bans I only see the practical use of a WAF in very few cases. But I am no expert on this topic and any input would be much appreciated so that fellow users of frameworks and rules such as mod_security will understand the implications with Discourse.

Thank you

Why is there no UI to create a poll?

I'm puzzled by this. Unless someone tells you how to create a poll in discourse, you would simply never know through the UI. Why is there no poll button in the editor?

I'm not suggesting a full poll-wizard, just a simple button that inserts the most basic structure for you.

Discourse Embedding Woes

$

@dradtke wrote:

I'm working on implementing Discourse comments for a custom-built blog engine, and so far it's been kind of a bumpy road. Getting Discourse installed on a Digital Ocean droplet was easy, but getting embedding to work so far has been quite tricky, and while it's sort of working, it's definitely not yet fully functional.

I followed the advice listed here, using the latest version of Discourse (1.4.0.beta10).

  1. The first snag was the removal of the Embedding group under Admin > Settings, which I couldn't find for the life of me. I ended up downgrading to version 1.3.4, after which I was able to access it. Is there a reason this was removed?

  2. The site I want to host Discourse on runs exclusively over HTTPS, and this ended up being an issue. My plan is to try and get Discourse running via HTTPS as well, but in the meantime I've downgraded my site to plain HTTP just to try and get everything else working, as embedding the HTTP-based Discourse inside my HTTPS site didn't work.

  3. I had to install a plugin to set X-Frame-Options to ALLOWALL, otherwise the browser would refuse to display the iframe. Pretty easy fix, but still kind of annoying.

  4. The Javascript snippet provided by eviltrout didn't work. My fix was to not put the variables inside a DiscourseEmbed object and leave discourseUrl and discourseEmbedUrl global.

  5. The final issue, and the one I'm currently stuck on, is getting it to create new topics as needed. The iframe hangs on "Loading Discussion...", and the logs are reporting 404 errors, as if it's trying to use the URL I pass it as a page on the Discourse site, even though I'm not using the topicId approach. I did manage to get one discussion to show by setting it to use my site's root, but that defeats the purpose of being used for blog comments, as the same discussion would be shown regardless of blog post.

Overall, it looks like eviltrout's tutorial is somehow already out-of-date. I installed everything according to the recommended steps, using the Docker installation method on a fresh Digital Ocean droplet, but there are still enough issues that I'm not sure I can get this up and running before the site needs to ship.

I would love to be able to get Discourse working on the site, so any pointers would be much appreciated. Does anyone have any experience setting up embedded comments on a fresh site with a recent version of Discourse?

Data Explorer Plugin

@riking wrote:

The Data Explorer plugin allows you to make SQL queries against your live database, allowing for up-to-the-minute stats reporting.

Usage

After installing the plugin, head to /admin/plugins. Click on the "Settings" button, and turn on "data explorer enabled", then return and reload the page.

There should now be a tab in the stacked nav called "Data Explorer". Select it, then use the + and Import buttons to create or import queries. For an example, let's import one that I wrote.

Download this file, then open the import dialog and drag the file onto the dialog.

most-common-likers.dcquery (1).json (442 Bytes)

Click Import to save it to the server. Select the query from the drop-down box, and try running it with the Run Query button. (Note: For the purposes of demonstration, I checked the "Include query plan" box.)

Looks like all of the Discourse developers like each other quite a bit.

Installation

If you're on a hosted Discourse forum and the data explorer doesn't show up at /admin/plugins, email us at team@discourse.org to ask us to add it for you.

For self-hosted discourse forums, follow the Install A Plugin guide using https://github.com/discourse/discourse-data-explorer.git .

Moving Discourse to subdirectory caused all uploads to break

@staticinvocation wrote:

I recently bought an EV cert for my domain and I wanted to use it on both my main site and my forum. To solve this, I followed this guide and moved it to a subdirectory using a Varnish configuration.

The only noticeable problem was that this broke all current and new uploads. Existing uploads 404 from nginx, and new uploads fail with no error in sideqik or the error log.

You can view the site here: https://platinumcheats.net/forum/. It was moved from http://forum.platinumcheats.net/.

Anyone know what the deal is/how to fix? I understand that subdirectories are now officially supported in Discourse.

Method typeClass() in site-setting.js.es6 incorrectly handles multiword setting types

The problem line:

Surely, it must be:

return componentType.replace(/_/g, '-');

For now, typeClass() incorrectly handles multiword setting types, for example: my_setting_type => my-setting_type because JavaScript String.replace() method replaces only the first occurence by default.

Hello,

When I "mute" a category it no longer appears in my home page, latest, new or unread tabs. This is great!

However when I "mute" a tag it still shows up in all these places.

Is this an intended feature? Is there a way to get "muted" tags working the same way as "muted" categories?

Thank you!

Awards, badges or groups for a certain time period?

@terraboss wrote:

Hi all,

I'd like to manage our FabLab visitors and members with Discourse. Especially those, who've got an machinery introduction for certain devices. Each introduction should expire after exact one year. So we're able to provide refresh courses for them and have an overview of the users with profile picture and so on. last but not least, we'd like to remind them to stay in contact with us, to continue.

My questions are:

  1. How would you solve this with Discourse (best way of practice)? – Sort them into groups and automatically give them badges? (by year, e.g. 3D Printing, CNC milling)
  2. Is it possible to setup a sql query for certain awards to expire after a year?
  3. How can we remind our members to refresh their skills related to the last introduction (e.g. > 10 months)

And as an extra point: We need to require profile pictures for those people who've got a introduction. That's actually very important to us, to avoid unauthorised access to the machinery. How can we manage this related to the award / group system?

Thank you all in advance
Markus

Expanding reply chain breaks YouTube playback

Setting up a test scenario here may prove a bit tricky, so I'm just going to link to somewhere I know it happens.

  1. Go to this post: https://what.thedailywtf.com/t/so-i-wrote-my-own-forum-software/50720/170?u=raceprouk
  2. Play the video; you don't have to wait for it to end
  3. At any time while playing or after it ends, expand the reply chain above or below; notice the video stops/suggestions disappear
  4. Try to play the video; it won't play

This has been seen on both Chrome and Firefox, across Windows, OS X, and Linux. And it doesn't seem to be restricted to one video; I was able to trigger the issue here too (also a useful link if the first one yields Access Denied or something).

Embedding Comments and SSL

@dradtke wrote:

After following the instructions listed here, I pretty easily got Discourse up and running over SSL using a self-signed certificate. The page I want to embed comments in is also running over SSL with a self-signed certificate (it's still in heavy development, and will use a properly-signed one once the site's ready), but Discourse doesn't seem to like it:

Job exception: SSL_connect returned=1 errno=0 state=SSLv3 read server certificate B: certificate verify failed

Is there a way to configure Discourse and/or Nginx to accept self-signed certificates?
