Totally new at this stuff, but have been wanting to test Discourse for a while now. Today I finally pulled the trigger and got myself an account at Digital Ocean. I installed a Discourse droplet but am not receiving the email verification for the admin account to login.
I have 'destroyed' the droplet and re-installed Discourse about 7 - 10 times today, each time trying different settings for the email setup, but nothing has worked. I have tried using both the SSL and non-SSL server and port settings, but neither have worked. I have tried different hostnames, too.
Am I supposed to install a mail server on Ubuntu?
Just in case I am doing something wrong, here's how I'm installing Discourse:
New droplet
Hostname "forum" (without the quotes), also used forum.domainname.com, and test.domainname.com, among others.
We use Discourse at my work place as a more public/searchable means of communication than email. It's been working well so far but since we are about 1300 people I find I need to Mute categories that I don't have much interest in just to keep my Latest tab manageable.
This leads to some problems though... Let's say that someone mentions me in a topic within a Muted category, or that I create a topic in that category. These are now topics that I care about but because they are within a Muted category they don't show up on my Latest tab.
I realize that I will see the topic show up in the Unread tab and that I can find the topic through other means (like going to the category's page) but I'd like the Latest tab to show me the topics that I care about.
I propose that Muting a category would only hide Normal topics from the Latest tab. Tracked/Watched topics would always show up regardless of the category's state.

Currently when we disagree or defer a flag, there is no distinction between either of the actions. I personally think disagreed should go something like this:
disagreed: Thanks for letting us know. However, we did not find anything wrong with the post and will not take any actions"

After checked the box for "Open external links in a new tab by default" the system seems not to work. It does not open links from Discourse in new tab in Firefox/Ubuntu.
Hello, I'm importing comment from wordpress to discourse (POST call on /posts) inside a PHP script (i already tried with curl and file_get_contents) but after about 15 minutes it begins to respond only with error 500. Discourse Logs doesn't report anything, but server logs report this error (with some censored data):

On the Atom forum, this topic (and its reply) was flagged as spam. I responded to the flags as Disagree and Unhide and a little while later the system flagged the same posts for spam again.
We are finding that Whispers are not obvious enough with that little eye icon. Do posts that are 'whispers' have a CSS class that I can use to make these posts pop?
I like to say a huge thank you to the Discourse development team for creating this wonderful forum stack. I use it on my tiny new forum. I am loving the speed and the simplicity of this software.
Its the best forums software I have ever used, works lovely on my DigitalOcean server.

This has been asked a few times before, but is it possible to set it so that new topics actually default to a certain category? I've disabled Uncategorized posts, but the user still has to manually select a category and it would be nice to pre-fill that for them.

so my www.example.com shall automatically route to www.example.com/list and then it shall look for an action latest in list_controller but I cant see any action like this in list_controller Have I missed anything? Thanks
Though it is possible to name a property something like "enable" where it actually disables when the value is true without breaking the code, it sure could be confusing to others and self after the code has grown cold. AFAIK there is no "rule" in this regard, but descriptive naming is a very good idea.
In that vien, re "discourse-____" It seems logical to have "discourse" in a plugin name as that is what it works with. (there's descriptive naming again) - BUT- I know when I wrote some WordPress plugins a few years ago I got in the habit of prefixing my class / function names with "mittineague_" to prevent the possibility of conflicts.
So, for example, instead of my naming a plugin discourse-whatever I could name it mittineague-discourse-whatever
More verbose, true, but as the number of Discourse plugins is growing, maybe doing similar is a good idea?
I just registered, as we're using Discourse here too and wanted to ask for this feature:
Is there a way to hide your login status? So that others can't see, that you're online?
Some users requested this to safely use Discourse during work. They don't want, that others can publicly see, that they were logged in during their working hours. Most other board softwares that I know, have this feature.
I'm not sure what and how is considered when ranging topics in the /top page, but this case looks really weird for all mods, who watch the list regularly.
We're running a contest where the top topic of the month wins. However, people who participate are already unhappy about the ranging and they all think the topic #3 must be currently at the top. We, admins and mods, think the same.
Please could you take a look, what might be moving the topic #3 below and keeping the other one at the top?
It might be that investigating this case might help to introduce more factors in ranging that were not considered yet.
