Move posts to new message

@AdamCapriola wrote:

Similar to how posts can be moved to an existing or new topic, it might be pretty cool if posts could be reassigned to a new message.

One case where this would be helpful is when a couple of users get off topic — a moderator could check off their posts and usher them into their own private area ("Get a room, you two!"). Topic is back on track and the tangential users can continue their conversation.

Sometimes it makes sense to move these kinds of posts to a new topic ... or delete the posts ... or lock the topic ... but I've definitely encountered scenarios where isolating the users would be ideal.

Unicorn log files using up all the space on my box

@bioball wrote:

Hey all,

I can't find a thread about this. I recently installed a fresh Discourse on a box last week, and today I noticed that all available disk space was used up. Looking further, the largest file on my box was a 1.3 gigabyte log file.

ubuntu@<hostname>:/var/discourse/shared/web-only/log/rails$ ls -lrt
total 1314412
-rw-r--r-- 1 ubuntu www-data          0 Oct 20 21:41 production_errors.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 ubuntu www-data      73182 Oct 21 22:29 production.log-20151022
-rw-r--r-- 1 ubuntu www-data       1494 Oct 22 03:10 unicorn.stdout.log-20151022
-rw-r--r-- 1 ubuntu www-data          0 Oct 22 07:35 production.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 ubuntu www-data          0 Oct 22 07:35 unicorn.stdout.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 ubuntu www-data        538 Oct 22 07:35 unicorn.stderr.log-20151022.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 ubuntu www-data 1345859584 Oct 23 07:37 unicorn.stderr.log-20151023
-rw-r--r-- 1 ubuntu www-data          0 Oct 26 18:24 unicorn.stderr.log

I didn't have enough available disk space to open and read what the logs were. Am currently on version v1.5.0.beta3 +19.

Am I missing some config that rotates these logs? Or is this is a bug?

Data mining a Discourse site for links

@Jeffrey_L_Frusha wrote:

Could a plug-in, like the feature where I can archive and download my posts, be adapted to archive and download the links from all posts in a Discourse forum, rather than reading all posts and digging each one out, manually?

This would allow someone to categorize and create a library of those links, for a 'wiki'...

The advanced search 'Google' only brought up some 752 results (which seems low), with:

site:discuss.seasteading.org http

and 732 results with:

site:discuss.seasteading.org www

The question was brought up by another forum member. I'm just another forum user, not a mod, or anything.

Blogger Integration Plugin

Here's a plugin that automatically posts topics from a Blogger blog to a Discourse site, and maintains a link and comment counts on the Blogger site. It doesn't embed comments, just links them, requiring readers to go to the associated Discourse site to discuss the topic.

It also provides an optional 'chained flow', where a notification post is added to the previous topic when a new topic appears, containing links to the new blog post and topic.

Broken images inside posts

@ctri wrote:

Hello,

I'm trying to setup a Discourse instance (private) on a Digitalocean droplet and I'm having some problems with the uploaded images, because they are not showing in the posts.

The weird thing is that right after insert the image, when it finished to upload you can see for a second. After that, the link breaks and you can't see it anymore. I have tried to rebuild the HTML and it didn't work, the same thing happens: you can see the image for a second after rebuilding only. An example:

The same thing is happening with the assets uploaded to customize the look of the forum. When I upload a new logo the image is broken inside the post but, as you can see in this other screenshot, I can use it to customize the header.

This one is showing the 404 error that I get for the images. I know he images are in the server because if I go to the dir:

/var/discourse/shared/standalone/uploads/default/original/1X/

I can see every single image file there.

After some reading here in Meta about similar problems (here and here) I check my app.yml and the hostname line looks fine (no http:// in front of the domain name)

DISCOURSE_HOSTNAME: 'bacter.io'

Also, I'm not sure if this can be of some relevance, I have the Discourse forum hosted in a subdomain following the instructions in this guide:

Running other websites on the same machine as Discourse

I would love if somebody can point me to the right direction (I can't find any other related post here in Meta) so I can do some further investigation and solve the problem.

Thanks!

Tested in Chromium and Firefox on LInux and Firefox on Android.
Discourse version (Docker install): 1.5.0.beta 3 +46

P.S: I hope you can excuse the possible grammar mistakes in my post, english is not my first language.

I prefer the "Paste" behavior but shouldn't these actions be consistent?

Redesign editor to improve the writing experience [on Desktop]

@madrush wrote:

I'm really interested in having good and conscientious writers on my Discourse site—writers who not only write well, but also enjoy the aesthetics of writing, and who feel that their own writing process is served by the aesthetics of the interface before their eyes.

By this I don't mean beauty for beauty's sake, or any kind of unnecessary frills. One thing that's a nice about a simple, spiral-bound notebook, for example (for purposes of journaling or taking notes) it's that is just so serviceable and unprepossessing. (A notebook that's too nice is hard to write in.)

There is a functional simplicity, an aesthetic spareness, to a good notebook that does everything you need, which is essentially one thing: let you think.

A forum is similar. Its purpose is to work out our minds—with other minds.

I would like to imagine, for my community of writers, that we are writing together in a sort of "internet of notebooks." But we get to write on each other pages, add stuff in the margins, and make connections between scraps of thought in a somewhat organized (by categories and topics and such) yet organic way.

One of the reasons I'm so excited about Discourse is that it seems to provide the background technology to accomplish this. However, I believe the actual aesthetic of the writing experience (to get back to my original point) can be improved. By "aesthetics" I also mean something like visual ergonomics.

For example: as I sit at my desktop writing this post, here is what I see:

Here's what I like:

  • not too many buttons.
  • good width to composer
  • default vertical space is good, but could give a little more height for breathing room

What I don't like:

  • My eyes have to look at lower left corner of screen, instead of front and center.
  • Seeing double. I prefer a single pane to focus on by default.
  • But if I hide the preview area, my line length goes twice as wide. Too wide for reading comfort.

Of course, I wouldn't want to lose the context of the site, or the post I may be replying to, in the background; so I wouldn't put the editor totally front and center, covering the entire screen (like Wordpress' full-screen editor view). This is not a personal blog, but still a discussion space....

So my feedback boils down to that there needs to be a more elegant balance, in my opinion, between the editor (the writing and thinking I'm focused on) and the background content I'm engaging with (the "notebook").

Maybe something like this could be workable?

The only thing I'm not sure of is how the preview would be appear. Maybe as an overlay?

Thanks for the great software! I'm enjoying learning how it works and conceiving the possibilities for my site.

How to debug the Discourse?

$

@Gashan_Ali wrote:

Hi

I would some information on learning how to debug Discourse, setting up a few breakpoints, and just sort of poke around. I'm no expert in Ruby or Rails.

I am using RubyMine. I've downloaded the repo, and installed all the bundles and gem packages.

I try to run for example the file "badges_controller.rb" and I get the error message:

/Users/[user]/Documents/discourse/app/controllers/badges_controller.rb:1:in `<top (required)>': uninitialized constant ApplicationController (NameError)
	from -e:1:in `load'
	from -e:1:in `<main>'

I don't even know why I expect it to run as I am not connected to a database, I notice the message:

7:26:35 PM Database connections detector
           Database connection properties are detected.
           Click here to let RubyMine discover and setup new data sources. (show balloon)

What do I have to do to set up a local dev environment where I can begin to use RubyMine debugger on the app?

thanks :smiley:

Automatic SQL badges not firing ":user_badge_granted" trigger

Been trying to use the :user_badge_granted to trigger a task in a plugin I've written. I'm currently using the :user_badge_granted as a proxy for a user updated trigger (I haven't had time to create a pull request for a user updated trigger).

I've noticed that badges that are automatically granted using SQL, and triggered on user info updates don't fire the :user_badge_granted trigger, and thus not firing my plugins task.

We have been getting a message "There was a problem sending another activation email. http: undefined - undefined" when trying to send out an activation email to a user as an admin.

We sent out a number, to remind users that they need to activate their account and then after sending 20 this error has appeared and we can't get rid of it.

We upgraded to version v1.5.0.beta3 +52 and it is still appearing.

It appears to be a similar bug to this one: https://meta.discourse.org/t/there-was-a-problem-sending-another-activation-email/20021

A working ldap plugin for discourse

Hi,

I looked at Discourse and loved the UI and features. I naively assumed ldap support a given (really even if it not there, how much will it take).

I looked at various topics and various discourse ldap plugins on github. Alas none worked. Hence I made a try of my own (dont know anything about ruby, forget about rails).
Finally I got a working plugin. Most people should be able to use it with any code change (by just modiying the plgin settings).

thanks,

Hello I look for a developer who would be able to develop a plugin to customize a site.

1 - I hope that the user is using the login has already created on the main website (sso).
2 -I wish every subject create the main site automatically creating a new post in Discourse (such as on the website korben)
3 - That the comments are visible from the post set on the main site. (such as on the website korben)

Optional (but appreciated):
4 -opportunity to respond from the main website (with the maximum option Discourse).

Important information, the site is done in PHP / JAVASCRIPT / HTML / CSS (it will be on a dedicated server based on linux)

Of course any work deserves salary and we will discuss without.

Emoticon auto-completion in french

@Baptiste_Michaud wrote:

Hi,

Many of my users are complaining about the emoticon autocompletion.
In french, we put a space before the semicolon, and use a lot the semicolon to start quote or list.

So, each time, somebody type "blablabla :[enter]", he end up with a :smile: instead of a paragraph.

How about adding a configurable delay before the emoticon auto-completion ?

ps: here is my customized discourse http://www.numerama.com/discussions/
