How to avoid upstream timeouts?

@pieterhoogenboom wrote:

My Discourse is doing great, but I've been checking my logs and sometimes the connection times out.

I know this is not a Discourse problem per se, and more of a Docker one, but it might be useful for newbies (like me) to know how to tune our Nginx, Docker or Discourse to avoid this. I already removed the default "fail_timeout". Not sure if it did anything though.

Any help is much appreciated :smile:

Here's my log:

So I am probably missing it...but I cannot seem to find a quick way to view the number of topics per category? I know I can go into "edit" on the category page, and get the number of topics from that page where it states "Can't delete this category because it has xxx topics", but I am hoping to see more than one category at a time (ideally all on one screen). Is this possible to do somewhere?

As we know, video files are always very large. It is a heavy burden to a small forum server. Is it possible to develop an API or plugin for uploading videos directly to the website owner's youtube account? Then we can easily add youtube video address to discourse forum. Hope this method will relieve the burden of the server.

Category-specific banner?

@CCSAwebdev wrote:

We would have a need (if possible) for creating banner topics that are shows only within a certain category.

If we have 2 major categories (only for example, we certainly use more):
- Students
- Faculty

Having a different 'how-to' posted for each that is dismiss-able would be very helpful.

I realize that many would answer with 'just use a pinned post' but we have lots of subcategories and need something to float above the fixed category (and subcategory) list.

We created our server as discourse.redacted.com and then changed it to faq.redacted.local.

Some links show up as discourse.redacted.com and the don't work.

If I edit the posts (A) the links work 100% of the time in the preview, and (B) the links are relative links in the post (i.e. they don't specify either discourse.redacted.com or discourse.redacted.com).

All help appreciated.

Generating sitemap for a private discourse instance

@Joey_Tuan wrote:

I've integrated discourse into my site https://reviews.anytreatment.com as a private forum, and I was hoping to generate a sitemap to facilitate an internal site-wide search (I use swifttype for this).

Currently a user has to be on discourse to search topics, and I want them to find topics from the non-discourse portions of my site as well.

Anyone know how I can generate this sitemap?

EDIT: It seems like swifttype might be able to handle this with some config that allow their crawler to access password-protected sites. Will update once I get this going.

Hey! I'm wondering if there is any way to display a custom field in the user directory.

While having statistics is nice to see how users at large are using the site, a user directory should also have an associated list of useful values associated with that user.

I would like some way to see at-a-glance a list of all custom fields (or chosen custom fields) when browsing through the user directory.

Disabling automatic topic unpinning?

Like others, I was confused by this:

One use case of pinned topics are long-running devlogs / diaries. Having the topic unpin itself is rather inconvenient as it will eventually get lost.

Can automatic unpinning of topics be disabled, preferably on a per user basis?

Safari in iOS 9.1 hangs after logging in

Hi there,

I've noticed this behaviour in the Safari browser in iOS 9.1 on an iPhone 6:

  • User clicks on login and fills out modal login box.
  • After submitting log in credentials - Safari attempts to log in but modal sticks on screen and browser hangs indefinitely.
  • Only manually refreshing the page lets user proceed.
  • User is looged in when browser is refreshed.

This has been tested on several different Discourse installations - occurs with each.

Other mobile browsers such as Chrome do not have the issue and work as normal. Desktop Safari is not effected also.

Free to edit post at any time

I vow users should be able to freely edit their own posts. And convert them to wiki as they will.

I also understand that's probably not the case to keep the "conversation flow". Maybe due to some notification technical aspects. But not all topics are conversations. And there is a big value in updating posts.

Technically there could be a feature to allow "minor edits" like in wikipedia. Those as opt-in, along with edits within the grace period (currently default to 5 minutes) would not trigger notifications.

Makes any sense?

Now, I'm not sure of any of my assumptions... Because of the following context:

Searching for "edit post" didn't bring me any hits on this, surprisingly. I still think there must be a topic about this already (although marking topics as duplicate would be another feature to suggest).

I'm also not sure if this was a feature in the past (I think it was) and, if so, now it certainly has a reason to have been removed. Why, though? Why can't we edit posts at any time? At least here on meta, I suppose (also not sure there is a configuration for this).

I was trying to edit this post, just about 3 months old, and couldn't. Not that I think how old a post is should matter, but apparently it currently does.

If it's not possible to do so via the SSO, do you know of an alternative way to accomplish something similar?

Thanks!

@tobiaseigen wrote:

Continuing the discussion from Hamburger menu: how to change FAQ to Guidelines, add Help link, remove About or make About customizable?

I am back to wanting to clean up the presentation of FAQ and GUIDELINES on my discourse. Initially I had merged the two into one topic that is displayed at /faq and /guidelines but then I learned later that the "read guidelines" badge only is shown once users have read to the bottom of this page.

I depend on this badge to see who has actually read the guidelines, and so I have separated these again. So now I have /faq going to a discourse topic containing the faq, and /guidelines as previously displaying just the guidelines. So far so good. :smile:

Now on the hamburger menu there is still a FAQ link but it actually goes to /guidelines and not to /faq. I see this is the case on meta as well. I suggest this be changed so FAQ goes to /faq another link is added that goes to /guidelines. This would not be too cumbersome - we'd then have the four ABOUT, FAQ, GUIDELINES and KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS links on the menu.
