Customize all text in Discourse

Previously changing text in Discourse required either pasting brittle javascript into a <HEAD> customization or using a plugin (which isn't available on many hosting plans).

Well, good news: in the latest builds of Discourse you can customize all of the text via the admin interface. Simply go to Admin > Customize > Text Content and you'll be presented with a search page.

Search for the text you want to customize, click Edit then enter the new value. For example, I changed the "Dashboard" link to say "Evil Trout" here on Meta. After refreshing the page the text has been updated:

As always, give it a spin and let us know of any bugs or suggestions and we'll tweak accordingly!

1.4.3 Upgrade Oddity?

@fearlessfrog wrote:

We're on stable 1.4.2 and I saw in /Admin a notification that an upgrade was available.

On the web update page, the discourse_manager was the only thing enabled to be upgraded, with other updates shown for other packages/plugins but their buttons not enabled.

I upgraded but after it finished when returning to the the /Admin page and going back to select further updates (to update Discourse main, plugins etc) I get the following:

It's no problem for me to go in and do that via SSH, but I just wanted to ping incase this wasn't normal for a stable small point release?

EDIT: I upgraded fine doing the above git pull etc, so really it's just a question of if it needed to do this or not, i.e. not upgrade via the web admin?

WordPress themes designed for Discourse forums & commenting

@crt343 wrote:

Anyone know of a WordPress theme specifically designed to integrate Discourse forums and commenting?

Discourse seems like an ideal all-in-one solution for the interactivity of a knowledge base, forum, and blog on a WP site. There are many themes designed for that purpose that embed BBPress forums (e.g. Colorlib collection), but I can't find anything similar designed around Discourse.

Many thanks in advance!

Account activation stopped working

When a user tries to activate their account, the page loads with JS errors and the button isn't working:

ReferenceError: $ is not definedvendor-...1c68.js (line 33, col 5)
ReferenceError: $ is not definedvendor-...1c68.js (line 20652, col 3)
ReferenceError: $ is not definedc52d2a2...e1b49d8 (line 86, col 5)

Unfortunately, even though I have manually activated the user from the admin panel, upon login they still get the message that their account is not activated.

Version: v1.5.0.beta5 +95

P.S. It used to work initially, and then stopped for no apparent reason.

Hi All,

Yes, I've read a couple of threads about this issue, but still I don't know when to wait for a solution.

Is it ok, if I still have this issue even updating to the latest v1.5.0.beta6 +23 build?

Thanks in advance!

Benefits of running discourse in separate containers for data and web

What leverage do I gain by separating discourse installation into two or more containers. E.G. for data and web.
Will there be scenarios where I want to upgrade and rebuild web container without rebuilding data container and losing all the data in DB.

Discourse Taking too Much Space on Every Upgrade

@Siraj_M wrote:

I'm worried about discourse because at this time my forum has not more than 200 topic yet and we are using DO $10 packages includes 30 GB Space, 6 plugin has been installed on my forum and left space is 11.9 GB which is horrible because when we upgrade each time Discourse version to latest one then it's space consuming in GBs :scream: OMG

Secondly we installed discourse solved, discourse adplugin, discourse bbcode color plugins and when we also update those plugins or install any plugin each plugin taking space in like 500 MB, 1 GB, 200 MB etc

Whats happening here... So far 200 topics on my forum and remain space is 11.9 GB Free :dizzy_face:
Yesterday 13 GB something was free yesterday night when we update docker manager and discourse to beta version then after we saw few hours 11.9 GB was remaining Approx 1.1 GB consumed during this upgradation..

Please help me!

I just converted my site to Discourse!

I've been waiting for a LONG time to port my IPBoard system over to Discourse. Waiting since the first announcement back when. I finally did it last night, after an unfortunate database error left my previous board inaccessible.

I just want to give a shout out to the developers, and the community here. I spent the last 12 hours making my site into exactly what I've always wanted a board to be.

I even ported my theme in without any difficulty.

SWOON

Cheers,

max_url_length is only 500 characters, could that be increased?

@CoinGame wrote:

Hey everyone,

Is there a reason the max_url_length is only 500 characters? With the domain character limit of 100 and the URL length of 500 it puts a max of 600 characters for a topic URL. Though up to 2000 characters should be fine.

This limit is breaking a tool that we started using on our forum. If you take a look at the long URL on this topic post you'll see what I mean. From what I understand it should be okay to increase the max_url_length quite a lot from this current 500 limit. Any thoughts on why this value is chosen for the limit, or if it could be increased? I'd be happy to submit a PR that bumps it up to 1500 or so.

Username change implications

Haven't quite found the answer anywhere, so forgive this question which I am sure must have been asked before. If I (being the admin) change someone's username (which I can and for which real life scenarios exist that might ask for this), what are the implications? I am asking specifically about @ mentions and quotes within the forum as well as links. Do I break a lot of legacy content with a username change or is it being kept internally and it's all forwarded? How is Discourse handling this? Thanks in advance!

S3 uploads fail on large files

$

@dobon wrote:

Hi all,

I have configured my discourse installation to upload files to S3, but am having unusual delay when uploading large files. To preempt the question: yes, I have configured nginx and discourse to accept arbitrarily large files (in fact, I made a thread that sussed out a bug preventing uploads larger than 10MB due to a hard coded limit on the frontend).

When I upload a large file (50MB-2GB), the uploader shows progress that crawls to 100% at the speed that seems right for my connection and filesize, but then the bar gets stuck at 100% for a very long while, and may never complete. Some files (~25MB) seem to 'upload' for x minutes, then stall for around x + 3 minutes, then 'finish' uploading and are available from S3. Others (~100MB) will seem to upload for x minutes until the bar says 100%, then stall indefinitely (or at least longer than overnight).

I am happy to investigate this issue, and will even contribute a PR to patch it, but would like to check-in to see if this is a known feature/limitation, and if anyone is already working on this bug.

Time To First Response - via API

@rchoi wrote:

I'm working to have sub-groups of users and wanting to calculate TTFR for that subgroup. Anyone know if such a thing is possible, particularly via the UI?

In the absence of this, I'm trying to figure out how to calculate it via the API. I see this post regarding how to calculate TTFR directly in the database:

Via the API, I tried looking at the /groups//posts.json endpoint, which shows "created_at" of the topic. On that specific endpoint, there are no replies; my guess is that I need to make a separate API call for each topic to get the first response (likely from somebody marked as staff) and then do a similar calculation.

If one does exist via the UI, happy to take suggestions on my API methodology.

Reply-by-email TL plugin

@JSey wrote:

Maybe you've also had problems with new members (ab-) using the reply-by-email feature. I feel that if you force users to first get a grip of your Discourse instance by using it via web, things run more smoothly. As soon as they reach TL 1 or 2, it's pretty safe to include the reply-by-email feature (which I personally really like a great deal!).

In order to have a setting like so:

…I wrote this tiny little plugin:

https://github.com/JSey/reply-by-email-TL

which does the trick. I really see this more of a “ironing out tiny wrinkles in a great product”. But maybe you have the same problem in your community, so here's a potential solution.

Creating user via API

@interneteur wrote:

Right now on my discourse set up, I have it set up to invite only, admin must approve users, and allow new registrations.

The issue I am having though is when I create a user via my API I still have to log in and approve the user on the forum.

So I was wondering if I had to uncheck any of those three to be able to make the user and they are auto created but I don't have to log in to the discourse to approve them.

I don't want other users to be able to invite other users to join though as I am creating users based on another sites sign ups.

Not sure how to explain as I know now what they are called - eg Topic (T19) Category (T31)

@jimithing83 wrote:

My apologies as the best way I can even explain the pertinent issue is with the labels in parens (t31) (t19) (t99) etc. is there any way to get rid of these? I have searched high and low both on the backend and front end for some sort of indicator of what they are, what they are even called, so I can get rid of them :-). I have searched the internet and the docs high and low, and cannot find any indicator of how to remove them. I love the simple look and feel of discourse and more importantly the stability of the codebase - but I am unsure as to how one can go about removing these? It's a gorgeous feel and vanilla look right out of the box - but I would love to know how to get rid of those (I have no idea lol).
