Email notifications from private messages can lead to misattribution of messages

This just happened to 3 people at my company and caused all sorts of confusion... it went like this:

People Involved

  • Me
  • Person B: Division VP
  • Person C: New admin assistant to Person B

What happened:

  1. I sent a PM to Person B.
  2. Person B replied to PM from me, with a comment about Person C.
  3. I received email notification of the PM in step 2 and replied to it, putting Person C's official email address in the cc: field to inform her of something.
  4. Some time passes...
  5. Person C forwards the message from step 3 to Person B, but Outlook fills in the Discourse reply email address instead of Person B's official email address. Message is intended only for Person B.
  6. Discourse intercepts the message from step 5 and posts it in the PM thread back to Person B, attributing the message to me.
  7. Persons B and C get super confused and angry.

While nothing can prevent what happened in step 5, I'm of the opinion that Discourse never should have posted the message to the PM thread between Person B and me.

Yes, this is sort of confusing. I can try to get some email headers, but given that Person B and Person C are in an office 1000 miles away and are somewhat non-technical, I don't have high hopes.

I have a newly created group and the group is allowed to create/view/reply to a new category. But the category is not visible on the front page - but is visible on the all categories dropdown?

I have other groups and categories with the same settings where this is not a problem. How do I troubleshoot?

A moderator at our instance tried to add an IP address to the blocked list, but nothing happens. It isn't added (as far as I can tell) and there is no feedback. And the drop-down which I'm sure used to give options for Block/Allow no longer does so.

I updated my dev and test machine to latest and can repo. Can't try this on Try as I don't have Moderator abilities.

Hi all,

Not sure if anyone else is getting this at the moment. I upgraded my forum to v1.5.0.beta6 +188 and all the avatars coming from gravatar are broken. Error log is below. Have rebuilt the app and run rails console command for updating gravatars. The error log that I'm getting is below.

Any ideas for fix? I saw @sam has made a few commits in the last few hours for avatars. Feel free to tell me I'm an idiot if it is my fault.

Changing from https -> http broke most avatars. Reverting doesn't fix them

@Joey_Tuan wrote:

When I tried changing discourse from https -> http, it broke a bunch of avatars but mysteriously left a few like this. All avatars currently come from SSO with our main app.

What I've done in an attempt to fix this:
- Revert and go back to HTTPS
- Remove fastly CDN, point directly to digitalocean IP address instead
- Try overriding broken avatar but forcing override using SSO
- of course, running ./launcher rebuild app after all changes

None of these worked. Here's the error I'm getting in logs:

Discourse::InvalidParameters (url) /var/www/discourse/lib/file_helper.rb:10:indownload'`

And I believe this line is responsible:

return proxy_avatar(Discourse.store.cdn_url(optimized.url))

`

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Migrating assets from old installation into docker

@stefanini.mf wrote:

Hi there. :smiley:

I'm migrating a self-installed discourse to a docker install.
As my database is setup with amazon RDS, I found no complication in just setting up the docker version and pointing to the old-good database we were already using. However, as expected, all my assets like attachments and and profile pics are in the /public folder of the old installation.

My expectations were that I'd easily find a /public folder in the docker version and make a cp -r of my files there, but docker seems to create a slightly more complicated directory hierarchy with some hashes and stuff. eg:

/var/lib/docker/aufs/mnt/4d9d59bbbbaa4b4791b72b0b8c8421584f6baa7469dae92282e2cf5e93327c28/var/www/discourse/public

:disappointed:

and I now have a few /public folders with different hashes each.

I've found this post: https://meta.discourse.org/t/migrating-an-old-discourse-install-to-docker/12439 so far.

But checking what will be done by this, it looks like it's gonna dump the whole database and some other stuff as well (which seems to me to be an overkill, as I'm using the same db and we have a rather big one running in production).

Does anyone know or can think of a nice way of doing this?
Or maybe a workaround for my cp -r plan

Thanks, beforehand. :wink:

Broken profile pics only at 25x25px version

Hi!

Some users in my forum have been experiencing some weird behavior with small profile pics in the topics wall. Some pics are broken only in the smaller version, but once you click on them to expand they show up just fine. You can check it here:

Only thing we've done was: once we migrated the forum we deleted the job queue from sidekiq (because we had to o many posts and users and that created around 2.000.000 jobs for PostCrawling, gravatar update and etc). Could that be the reason, and is there a way to fix it if it is?

Can anybody help me with this? :grinning:

Official Discourse Tags Plugin: Unable to rename tags

@jomaxro wrote:

Summary: While working to update some of our tags today, I found that the rename tag button does not seem to be working.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Create a tag by adding a new tag to a topic.
  2. Use the tag on one or more additional topics (likely not necessary)
  3. Go to the tag page $site_url/tags/$tag_name
  4. Click Rename Tag.

Expected Results:

Dialog appears prompting for new tag name.

Actual Results:

Button gains blue border, no dialog appears.

Notes:

Tested this as a moderator on the system listed below. Also had another moderator attempt this on a Windows 7 machine using Firefox Stable v42, with the same result.

Add new menu item and right side view on user profile page

@deviousmachin3 wrote:

Hey everyone, I'm having issues extending the user profile view how I'd like.

Currently I have two buttons that are being shown on the users profile page, when these buttons are clicked I simply need to show my new view on the right side just like if you're viewing private messages etc. The problem I'm having is that I'm mimicking the route from private messages like so...

import createPMRoute from "discourse/routes/build-user-topic-list-route";

export default createPMRoute('myview', 'private-messages');

but when attempting to load the profile page these routes don't appear to ever be registered in my plugin causing ember to throw an exception that the route can't be found. Do I have to explicitly set these routes in my plugin.rb file? This seems like it shouldn't be this complicated but I'm missing something.

Search box gets stuck on Android Nexus 10

@Sailsman63 wrote:

When accessing the search box on chrome 47.0.2526.83, android 5.1.0 (nexus 10) there is no way to dismiss the box in normal workflow.

  • taping outside the search has no effect
  • browser back dismisses he search, but also takes you back one page.
  • device back dismisses the keyboard, second back is the same as browser back.
  • navigating between browser tabs/apps, and whenever the keyboard is reactivated, search box snags text entry when coming back to this tab.
  • only way to dismiss and stay in your location is a page refresh. Given the performance/loading issues that Android has already, this seems suboptimal.

My workaround is that I have hacker's keyboard installed. (full QWERTY + meta & arrow keys FTW!) All the standard shortcuts work, so I can just hit {escape}, but even I don't use this keyboard for normal typing - it does not have swype yet - and most casual users would probably be totally lost.

Suspend a user via the API

@SylvainKalache wrote:

I spent quite some time to figure this out so I thought I'll share it for the next person who want to do this: suspend a user via the API.

If you use Discourse web interface, you can go to the route /admin/users/:username and then use the suspend button. You can find the suspend method in UsersController. Well turns out that you should not use :username in the route but the user_id.

To conclude, to disable a user via the API, use /admin/users/:user_id/suspend

Profile, messages, bookmarks window: Include Full Name?

@ckamps wrote:

I received feedback from one of our forum users that she was confused about whether or not she was logged in properly because when she clicked on the avatar:

  • as a new user, the automatically assigned "M" didn't mean anything to her
  • the username preceding the "Welcome to Collab Discuss!" made her think that it was part of a sentence welcoming that user - a user which is clearly not her account

These aspects combined caused her to reach out to support to clarify that she was logged in properly to the site.

What does the Discourse team think about including the user's full name in the window to help avoid such confusion?

Hi. I moderate for a message board site which is possibly going to switch to Discourse.

The moderators at this site post, but regular members are not aware of which other posters are moderators. We do this by having two accounts, one regular, and one with moderation abilities.

Is there a way to hide the moderator icon so that we can use the moderator account to post, without it being visible that we are moderators?

Thanks.

Incorrect Date on Badge Page

@jomaxro wrote:

Summary:
So I just received (it seems) the Tester Badge 6 minutes ago, but looking at the specific page for the badge lists the date as November 8.

Steps to reproduce:
No good way to repro this myself, but here is what (I think) occurred.

  1. Get 10 bug category topics liked by the Discourse Team
  2. Wait for query to be run
  3. Get awarded badge just after 12 AM EST

Expected Results:
Date of notification matches that of the Badge Page. Would assume date is when the 10th separate like is received.

Actual Results:
Dates do not match, date appears to be day the first bug report was liked...

Notes:
As mentioned above, no way to repro this on my end...sorry!
