Show all (my, their, everyone's) uploads

I'd like to see a list or thumbnail gallery of all my uploads.
Actually I'd like to see someone else's uploads.
Actually, as admin I'd like to see everyone's uploads.

Use cases:

I attached an image a few weeks ago and it's relevant to this new discussion. It was a direct cut-n-paste job so I don't have the original. I can't remember where I posted it, and I can't search for an image.

Ditto, but it was user x who posted it in.... which thread? when? It was a great image and I want to share it again.

I want to see what sort of files our users are uploading and also make sure that no single user is abusing the upload facility.

I can make mockups if you like, but I think this feature describes itself.

On my site, I have a lengthy FAQ topic with a table of contents at the top and section headings linked to using <a name="heading"></a> style anchors. Once on the topic, it works quite well to click around and find answers.

However, when I link to a section directly, it doesn't work properly. The linked to section is hidden behind the header menu.

Display profile header and navigation when reading messages

@tobiaseigen wrote:

I'm loving the new messages features with inbox, sent, archive folders. Nice job. :smile:

It would be improved by displaying the profile header and horizontal navigation (activity, notifications, messages, badges etc) when viewing individual messages, just like on the message list. As it is now the messages have no context and it's hard to find your way back to your message list.

An alternative might be to provide a link to the messages folder it is in directly under the title, e.g. inbox, like you see categories and tags for post topics.

Is MathJax really not working?

@mcmcclur wrote:

What's up with MathJax? The MathJax plugin announcement here on meta indicates that it's broken on the latest version of discourse. The edit history indicates that was months ago, though. Is there any way to get it working?

I've tried the standard install. Thus, my app.yml file has the following lines in the hooks section:

hooks:
  after_code:
    - exec:
        cd: $home/plugins
        cmd:
          - mkdir -p plugins
          - git clone https://github.com/discourse/docker_manager.git
          - git clone https://github.com/kasperpeulen/discourse-mathjax.git

The MathJax plugin appears on my list of plugins but is unselectable, as you can see:

The plugins console says that MathJax is enabled, at least, but it doesn't seem to be working on my site.

Has discourse-details moved into discourse?

@pfaffman wrote:

My update to 1.5.0.beta8 today failed (I think it was when I attempted the upgrade from the web interface) because discourse-details, which I had in my plugins, was not empty. It looks like this means that discourse-details moved into discourse proper, so my adding it as a plugin was superfluous and detrimental.

The error I got was

fatal: destination path 'discourse-details' already exists and is not an empty directory.

If you get this, you need to edit app.yml and remove your discourse-details line.

On a related note, when there is an update that requires doing a cd /var/discourse; git pull; ./launcher rebuilt app it would be nice to Normal People if the web interface said so rather than thinking they'll make sense of "so and so needs updating" (I can't remember the exact words). Perhaps there is a way to catch that error and provide some more helpful error than (paraphrase) "something went wrong, but it could have been several somethings."

OTOH, it may be the case that discourse is always so hard to administer that the people who do administer it don't need such coddling.

It sort of seems like that ./launcher rebuild app is always the safest way to do an update and probably easier than a bunch of web clicks anyway. Perhaps that'll change as discourse gets more stable; when I started using Linux every kernel update required all new binaries. . . .

Upgrading existing Discourse setup to SSL

@che2on wrote:

Dear Discourse community,

I need your help in getting my site live again with https support. Our Website community.gaadikey.com which talks about automobiles in India is using a one-click discourse droplet set up... I thought it is good thing to move my site to https and even bought an SSL certificate to install it...

I am new to all this RoR and docker stuff and I went through the instructions provided by Sam on allowing SSL for discourse docker setup . I added new template and added 443 port in app.yml etc ...and was facing an issue with a "tab character present" error for hours while editing app.yml file.

Eventually after removing tab character, and adding all required ssl paths, i tried "./launcher rebuild app" etc but I dont know what happend, My site is not live from then,,,, more than 24 hours from now ( and is still offline at this point)... I don't now what went went wrong, or what mistake I did....

But for now I dont want to lose all the existing activity which happened on our site... Please tell me how I can I find these data ( I know it is somewhere in postgres inside /shared/standalone ) and I can import all this data to an entirely new droplet.

Or If you can help me get past this error in existing setup that will be great too... But I am feeling very uncertain, as my site is down and also want to know in future how can I avoid the downtime while upgrading to ssl or doing something similar.

Looking forward to hear from you... Essentially I want to copy all data in postgres to new droplet ( I read this but couldn't figure out how to restore content of community)

Upgrade to docker 1.9.1?

I'm running Discourse on docker on Digital Ocean.

When I last did an apt-get upgrade I see that docker is held back. (This happens when a package's dependencies have changed, a paranoia that I do not fully understand.) I can do an apt-get upgrade lxc-docker to force it. Is there a reason not to upgrade docker to the latest version?

Indicator that a thread is being tracked

So I'm on another board I frequent, and I realized that there is no indicator in discourse for when a post is being tracked. It does add a "New" next to threads you've visited (but only if there is an unread post), but there is nothing that really jumps out at you "Hey! This is a thread you are tracking!"

Something like this would be very helpful imho:

Discourse is a beautiful software

@che2on wrote:

I really like the interface of discourse. It is so simple, easy to use and is definitely a modern day discussion app.... I was trying to evaluate different forum softwares across different platforms ... Php based forum software, nodeBB on node.js and others.. I found discourse very very intuitive.

The best part is it works so great on phone, adopts to the screen and you get all the features which you see in full fledged screen....

My favorite features in discourse:

  • Inviting people to a particular thread via email, and sending them invite link --- so they just click and join and even reply to topics.
  • So many great login options google, facebook, sso etc...
  • It is so fast, works like a charm
  • Latest topics poping up first in homepage without a refresh.
  • Suggestions based on what you type
  • badges - that helps in rewarding an active user there by increasing the user engagement
  • able to add people to group and also privately message them

Hats off to discourse team for bringing such a great piece of software and also making it open source... Discourse is the future - can be the next wordpress of web ( popularity wise). I recommend this software and also will ask people to switch to discourse and will try to actively engage in this community.

Regards
Chethan

Is "liking" a post too intimidating?

$

@Drew_Warwick wrote:

On one of the Discourse forums I participate in, someone posted a feature request. Three posts below the original one, someone posted a poll with the choices "Yes add this feature" and "no don't add this feature". The original post was only liked 18 times, but the poll was voted on 60 times and had 57 votes for "yes". You'd think everyone who wanted the feature would have liked the first post in the thread, but only 18 out of the 57 people who wanted the feature liked the original post. Why is this?

I'm extremely active in this forum and read almost every post, so I can say for absolute certain that nobody is hitting the daily like limit. Did the poll get more votes because it was anonymous as opposed to publicly displaying that you supported the addition of a particular feature? The feature wasn't anything embarrassing that you wouldn't want people to know you liked -- it was just about adding Trello links to the list of allowed links on the parent site. Is it because those 39 people reserve liking posts for ones that are extremely noteworthy? In that case, does there need to be another way to vote on feature requests in place of liking the original post in the topic (not necessarily a Discourse feature, but a plugin)? Features aren't decided on based on votes, so it doesn't seem appropriate to add a poll to each one. But how many people want the feature does have an impact on its priority, so it is important that how many people want a feature is known.

Any thoughts on why the poll had more votes than the OP had likes? Thoughts on how the number of people who want a feature is gauged? Any similar experiences you've encountered previously?

The forum the feature request is on is private, but the Discourse staff have an account there, so here's a link to the topic mentioned in this post for them.
