Is it possible to report mods?

Title says it all.

The mods on a certain site that is powered by Discourse are not doing their jobs properly which led me to leave the site. Is it possible to file a complaint to the mods? They didn't help me with my problems on the site one bit so I asked them to ban me (believe it or not they did that but they didn't help me with my other problems). Now that I can't be hated on anymore, is it possible for me to report them?

Making "search messages" less prevalent

@erlend_sh wrote:

Continuing the discussion from How do you search Your Private Messages?:

Searching messages exists now (I honestly don't know since when). There's no "in:messages" directive yet though.

But I think it's a bit too prevalent. It currently shows up anywhere on your user page.

That includes the content filters for:

  • All
  • Topics
  • Replies
  • Likes given
  • Bookmarks

All of which ought to trigger their own search filter. I also think the global one should be "Search my posts", not "Search messages". The global presence of "search messages" adds to the possible confusion that "when I do a normal search, does that include a search in my Messages?".

Actually I think an even better UX solution for "search messages" would be to not have the option at all, but to override it completely when on the Messages page:

"Private messages do not feel private enough" is a valid UX concern that has come up before. PMs need to be in their own safe space. It also make sense to differentiate it because many normal search parameters like category: won't work in messages.

How to set up virtual currency for users in discourse?

@doudou wrote:

How to set up vritual currency for users in discourse?

The first poster will be charged, for example: $1 virtual currency in the forum, and the best answer poster will get $1 virtual currency in the forum?

I think this method will make people to post before thinking carefully.

If the sum of virtual currency achieve to a defined number, he will get some gift from the forum.

Any ideas?

Subscribe/watch uncategorized posts?

Due to low traffic, most posts in my forum are not categorized. I cannot switch to "uncategorized" forum, so I don't see the button to watch all posts from that "category". Is there a way to watch them, or will I have to force a category (like "misc") for all posts?

Embedding Topics inside Google Sites Pages

@gaviriar wrote:

Has anyone come across a solution to embed a topic or a list of topics on a google sites pages using the HTML box which can be added to the google sites page?

I have tried to follow these instructions to try and place the embedded comments on my Google Sites page but I don't seem to see any output which shows that it is working when I load the page.

If anybody has come across a solution, or knows of a possible work around or even an existing plugin. I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks

How does the Migration work if we didn't have the Suspension Issue?

@cpradio wrote:

Continuing the discussion from Old user suspension reasons have gone missing:

Okay, so I know the migration/fix is to resolve those who were experiencing the enumeration issue, however, what if we are currently running a version prior to the issue being introduced and then upgrade after it was fixed?

What slightly worries me is this line

It seems to me that condition could exist prior, but I could be reading it wrong (and actually reading it again, I think I am reading it wrong). Either way, I'd feel better about a future upgrade knowing a bit more what would happen in the scenario described above where the Discourse running site has yet to experience the problem and chooses to upgrade to latest.

Posts in topic miscounted (2 posts, "3 replies", 4 things in the pager)

@calmh wrote:

"Latest" says:

(3 "replies")

Actual topic looks like this:

That's two posts (i.e., one reply), plus pinned/unpinned, although it says "3 replies" in here too so that's sort of consistent. There's no flagged/deleted/other funny business involved.

Also, the pager thingy says "4/4" so that's a third take on the number of things on this topic... That goes with the "4" on top of my avatar in the summary section under the first post, maybe?

The first post has been edited - is the version counted as another reply, perhaps?

Edit message per section for long messages (aka wikipedia)

0

@meglio wrote:

Sometimes, our messages are way too long. For example, a first message in the contest topic where the rules are explained, examples and advices are given.

Still, we promote "less but longer messages" in our forum, otherwise it may become a mess when a topic is summarized. So, we have to follow our own rules and post long messages as well!

We divide messages into sections with using a horizontal line separator:

... or just <H1> tags.

The proposition is to allow editing every section separately.

A section is a piece of topic message divided by any of the following:

  • a horizontal line separator
  • H1 tag (text prefixed with #)
  • H2 tag (text prefixed with ##)

The number of edits saved in the database might increase. However, such edits will be more atomic, and anyway they're cheap, thus not sure if it's a drawback or not.

Benefits:

  • easier to edit
  • less to scroll in the message editor
  • better, smaller atomic edits (aka commits in git - better to commit smaller changes and more often)

No other changes needed - "edit" history viewer needs no changes.

Unable to create whisper from mobile

@DeanMarkTaylor wrote:

Currently you can only create a whisper:

  • in the desktop version
  • or by replying to an existing whisper on mobile

There is no toggle or other button to create an initial whisper in a topic via mobile.

Perhaps this could be included in the full-screen mobile editor when this comes around to being developed?

What does posts.word_count column mean in the database?

0

@meglio wrote:

I need word count per topic for a badge query.
I found the word_count column in the posts table, but it seems not what I need.

For instance, this raw text:

так тут і питання, що якщо без вакцин ніяк, то обійдусь без кролів. Але є в деяких людей позитивний досвід, 3 роки без хвороб і вакцин один з них. Тримають в ямі.

Has a word_count = 1.

So, it is either a bug in how word counting works, or the column is simply supposed to do something else.

Please advise.

"Personal Page" badge

0
0

@meglio wrote:

I'd like to share a badge that I developed for a contest in forum.kozovod.com.

Personal Page badge

  • Created a topic in a particular category
  • Wrote at least 1000 words in the topic (in one or multiple messages)
  • Wrote in the topic at least 10 days (non-consecutive)
  • Uploaded at least 10 images

Goal

In our forum, we have a category named "farms". Goat farmers, small to big, are welcome to create their own topic/page there to tell about their farm, upload photos, push news and answer questions from those who buy milk or goats from them.

As part of the contest, we ask farmers to gain the "Personal Page" badge. This means they'll have to create a topic in that category and write regularly for at least 10 days.

Hope there are many more applications for such "about me" pages, ours being just an example for a goat farmers community.

Notes

  • Words are counted with using this quick and dirty word count SQL; a side-effect of such a simplicity is that e.g. an image would count for 4 words, but that shouldn't be an issue when you need 1000 words;
  • Images are counted with using the same simplistic approach
  • Only words and images of the topic owner are counted in the topic
  • Does not count:
    • blocked users
    • staged users
    • admins
    • archived topics
    • closed topics
    • non-visible topics (hidden from lists)
    • deleted posts
  • Run daily

SQL Query

WITH

personal_pages AS (
  SELECT *
  FROM topics
  WHERE category_id = 17
    AND archived = false
    AND closed = false
    AND visible = true
),

word_counts AS (
  SELECT p.id as post_id,
    length(raw) - length(replace(raw, ' ', ''))+1 as num
  FROM posts p
),

image_count AS (
  SELECT p.id as post_id,
    length(raw) * 2
      - length(replace(raw, '<img', '123'))
      - length(replace(raw, '[img]', '1234')) as num
  FROM posts p
),

summary AS (
  SELECT
    pp.id as topic_id,
    pp.user_id as user_id,
    COUNT (DISTINCT p.created_at::date) as num_days,
    SUM (wc.num) as num_words,
    SUM (ic.num) as num_images
  FROM personal_pages pp
  LEFT JOIN users u on u.id = pp.user_id
  LEFT JOIN posts p ON p.topic_id = pp.id
                   AND p.user_id = pp.user_id
  LEFT JOIN word_counts wc ON wc.post_id = p.id
  LEFT JOIN image_count ic ON ic.post_id = p.id
  WHERE u.admin = false
    AND u.blocked = false
    AND u.staged = false
    AND p.deleted_at IS NULL
  GROUP BY pp.id, pp.user_id
)

SELECT summary.*,
  CURRENT_DATE as granted_at
FROM summary
WHERE num_days >= 10
  AND num_words >= 1000
  AND num_images >= 10

Adjust your numbers at the very end of the query:

WHERE num_days >= 10
  AND num_words >= 1000
  AND num_images >= 10

... and put the category ID in this row:

WHERE category_id = 17

The query outputs more fields than required by the Badges System; that is for you to use the same query in the Data Explorer:

Your feedback is welcome.
Have fun!

Monkey patching a model from a plugin

Continuing the discussion from Monkey patching a controller from a plugin:

I'm making a plugin that will modify some model methods. just methods, no custom fields needed.

I have tried:

after_initialize do

      return unless errors.empty?
      if username =~ /[^A-Za-z0-9_\.\-\u4e00-\u9fa5]/
        self.errors << I18n.t(:'user.username.characters')
      end

    # modify other methods
  end
end

after_initialize do
  UsernameValidator.class_eval do
    # the same
  end
end

module UsernameValidatorExtensions
  # the same
end
after_initialize do
  class UsernameValidator
    prepend UsernameValidatorExtensions
  end
end

they all not work..... my script runs without errors, but no effect. how to do that?

How to tell the difference between Admin & Moderator from Staff list?

0

@jomaxro wrote:

Seems like a minor issue, but looking at the staff list one cannot tell who is an admin and who is a moderator without mousing over the icons. Take a look at the image below, can you tell who is who?

In case you were wondering, from top down, we have an Admin, then a Moderator, followed by another Admin, and finally the last users is both an Admin and a Moderator. I would suggest a better way of differentiating the two types of staff, without the need to mouseover the icons. No idea how to create a mockup, but I have two ideas. One would be to vertically align the corresponding badges, so Moderators are on the left and Admin are on the right. That would allow for a quick glance without the need for a new column. My other idea would be to color the badges differently. I have no preference on colors, as long as it was clear which was which.
