Enormous disk writes since 12.2015

Hi,

we are running the discourse docker installation on a digitalOcean 1GB instance. Everything way fine but something changes on December (around) 20th. From then on the disk writes (and hence the CPU consumptions) increased tremendously (see graph).

Could that be explained with changes in the Software? We always applies updates as they became available but unfortunately i didn't find any history which updates have been applied when. What kind of logging, meta, support-data would you need to help nailing this problem down?

What i've double checked already:

  • normal amount of new users (20) per day
  • normal amount of posts (100-300) per day

Next i will ask digitialOcean if that behaviour could also be explained with different/broken hardware.

Appreciate any help, Thomas E.-E.

CSS overrides aren't working after restoring from backup

@axfelix wrote:

Hi folks,

Just moved a Discourse instance to a new server using the builtin backup functionality. Everything went smoothly, except some of the old CSS overrides don't seem to be working anymore, and there's a lot of this in the logs:

Error: Template was precompiled with an older version of Handlebars than the current runtime. Please update your precompiler to a newer version (>= 4.0.0) or downgrade your runtime to an older version (>= 2.0.0-beta.1).
at Object.r [as checkRevision] (http://selectbutton.net/assets/vendor-b446ddf94c0fbadd8f0c95717a0ead0e.js:1:10979)
at Object.i [as template] (http://selectbutton.net/assets/vendor-b446ddf94c0fbadd8f0c95717a0ead0e.js:1:12411)
at r.e.template (http://selectbutton.net/assets/vendor-b446ddf94c0fbadd8f0c95717a0ead0e.js:1:2821)

Tried rebuilding a couple times and toggling the overrides on and off but that doesn't seem to be working. Any advice?

Mobile Push Notifications

@Overmind wrote:

I have one forum with 100k+ members and 4.5m+ posts, I'd love to eventually move it over to Discourse after testing it out with smaller forums, however the only thing holding me back for that is many users like to use the mobile app we have from Tapatalk's BYO to receive push notifications.

Push notifications (on mobile, in the background) are pretty critical to our forum as it drastically increases user engagement.

I've reached out to a few companies that create apps for forums to see if they'd be able to make one for Discourse, but checking here too to see if there is any service or way of integrating discourse into a mobile app with push notifications without having to completely start from scratch building a mobile app on your own for it.

Windows 10 Edge browser not given the option to use mobile view

Just noticed that when I browse my Discourse site on a 7" Windows 10 tablet using the Edge browser, I don't have the option in the menu to use mobile view. If I swtich to Chrome on the same device, the option is available. Due to performance reasons Edge is a much better browser on these cheapo tablets, though.

Also a side note that the writing mode of the desktop view does not really work with this configuration. The touch keyboard gets in the way and an iPad-like solution might be needed.

Poor emoji visibility/readability?

Is it just me or my device, or why the emoji in Discourse apear slightly soft or blurred? I've tried all the available emoji styles, but that did not really help. Currently using the Apple/International style, while they fit the flat UI poorly, they appear a bit more crisp.

Discourse emoji, Apple style:

Simple Machines Forum smileys:

As you can see the smileys used by SMF are more crisp and the facial expression is more obvious. And smiley faces are the easiest ones to figure out.

CDN Recommendation

@joebuhlig wrote:

I'm about to launch a couple new communities in the upcoming weeks and I'm working out all of my hosting and plugin details. A concern I have is storage of uploads. It's mostly a preemptive measure I'm considering. But I know very little about them. A few questions:

  1. Is a CDN worthwhile at the onset? I'm planning to do the $20/month Digital Ocean installation.
  2. I think I read a topic here about migrating to a CDN later. Am I correct in thinking it's a simple move later on?
  3. What are some of the most common and most recommended providers? I typically just hear of Amazon.

I greatly appreciate any feedback you can give.

Looking for "Dev Tracker" Mod/Plugin

@Dopefish wrote:

Forgive me if this isn't the right place, this is new software for me, spending some time playing with it, and ran into the first thing I can't seem to find on my own. It's something called the "dev tracker". I've spotted it in use on a couple of installations of Discourse. Linkage (straight to the feature):

https://talk.turtlerockstudios.com/groups/developers

http://forums.gearboxsoftware.com/groups/Inside_The_Box

If this IS inside the software, could someone direct me to where it is (as I didn't find it). If this is a plugin available somewhere, can someone point me to it?

I've spent a lifetime (like 15 years or so) working with vBulletin, so this has required a bit of a rethink in terms of organization and how I set things up. :slightly_smiling:

Anyways, if anyone can pass on info about Dev Tracker, I'd appreciate it.

S3 region vs. Discourse region

@dandv wrote:

My forum's backups don't work due to a mismatch between the region of the S3 bucket specified on Amazon's site, and the region specified in the Discourse Files setting.

Another user had the same problem:

What exactly does the Discourse region setting do, since the S3 bucket already has a region assigned to it when you create it?

Also,

Maybe the Discourse region setting is used when creating S3 buckets automatigically?

Would it be possible to automagically create the backup bucket as well, and avoid having to mess with region settings?

maybe it's better to allow set 2 smtp configure separately for digest and others.

PAID: Migrating existing PhpBB forum to discourse

@moshe wrote:

I have an existing (11 year old) site, which I want to port/migrate to Discourse.
It is based on a combination of PhpBB 3, Drupal 5 and Gallery 2 (inactive, but has content).
Site has 4000 users, 50K posts, 12K images and some content (on the drupal side) - altogether around 4GB of data

Would like to hire someone to do a port/migration to Discourse. need an estimation of effort/price required.
The main thing is to port the PhpBB forum with all users and content, the rest is not important and can be manually done by me.

Requirements:
1. Port of all data from PhpBB to Discourse installation (offline)
2. Basic theme for discourse (using existing logo an complementary color scheme).
3. Site is in Hebrew, so RTL everything is required (not admin interface, only user facing).

Thanks,
Moshe

How to expose host plugins volume for use in container?

@jradthebad wrote:

So the idea of having to declare plugins as part of the the container declaration and rebuild any time you want to add additional functionality to discourse seems a bit of a drawn out processes.

Maybe I'm just doing it wrong or don't understand why it's important, but is there a way to mount a host volume to the docker container and use THAT for plugins instead of building the plugins directory on the container build?

This would allow me to work with plugins directly, have them remain persistent and I wouldn't have to rebuild after every change.

Having the site die for 8 minutes at a time if I'm making changes makes me cringe.

Renewing letsencrypt with Cloudflare

@baldengineer wrote:

Not being a developer, I'm still learning how Discourse works.

Right now, I'm not able to renew my letsencrypt certs when Cloudflare is enabled. When I generated my certs, I didn't have Cloudflare enabled and I used the --standalone. Looks like to renew certs with CF, I need to use --webroot.

However.

letencrypt wants a path to nginx. Which, on my instance of discourse, I can't find.

So two questions: 1) Where is nginx at? (or is bundled inside of the "discourse service?" and 2) any ideas on how to renew letencrypt certs when using cloudflare?

"show subcategory list" setting bugged

@jradthebad wrote:

So not only am I not seeing the expected behaviour when choosing this option, but when hitting "edit" for a category, it fails to open the modal.

Additionally, on the categories list screen, if you have the "fixed positioning" for categories enabled, you can't change the fixed positions, and the menu on the right only gives the option for creating a new category. No choice for reordering.

It appears there are a number of issues with this option as I see a couple of other reports about weird behavior with it, but I didn't see anyone post that it was conflicting with core discourse functionality.
