Limiting a topic to members only

@joebuhlig wrote:

This is likely limited in scope as far as number of people that would use it, but I'm trying to nail down a way of giving out a discount code to members only. I'd like to create a new topic with details and the code itself, but I don't want it visible to the public. The point is to encourage people to sign up for the community.

I'm a bit hesitant to do this as I don't want people to just sign up, get the discount, and leave. I thought about a badge for users who created their first topic before granting access to the discount topic, but I would still need a way to limit access to that topic.

Any ideas? I'd be grateful for any help in solving this.

Badges / record of real life meeting attendance

@lrossouw wrote:

Not strictly a support, but I'd like some way fun/easy way to track attendance at an actual real life meeting. I want to then give people badges for meeting attendance or similar.

I have thought about having a printed QR code up with a short url to something on discourse. Tracking who clicks through that link. Maybe the link could create a post/like on an "inivisible" thread? Does an invisible thread exist? And I assign badges based on posts on that thread?

Needs to protect (lightly) against people who are not at the meeting obtaining the badge.

Any other ideas? I haven't worked with discourse long enough to figure out something of this sort.

Change Invited people username & name by default?

@SMT wrote:

Hi,

My forum is for entrepreneurs, companies. So mostly the invited people have the email like info@example.com, support@example.com. So when I invite these people all get the same username and name by default like info1, info2, support3 and so on.

What I want is the forum should automatically set the username and name to their domain
e.g. if the email is info@example.com - then the username & name should be domain name of the invited person - example

info@discourse.org - discourse

How can I do this?

What is the best way to react to emotional messages that touch personalities rather than topics; a question to experienced mods

@meglio wrote:

Running my first ever forum and recently hit first 500 users, I am in trouble with moderation and need your advice.

Some people are quite emotional: despite being very knowledgeable in many topics, they start to touch personalities time to time and to speak about persons rather than topics.

I simply do not know how to best deal with it. The situation is getting even worse because of the numerous issues:

  1. Russian and Ukrainian speaking people are not taught to be polite in the Internet. This is not our tradition. The way people speak e.g. in this forum and in my forum is very different. So my attempts to explain in PMs that we should discuss topics and opinions rather than people simply did not work. I suppose please are more aggressive in our countries

  2. I cannot ban people because they are extremely knowledgeable in the topics and they are the key people to develop the forum and fill it with useful information.

  3. If I do nothing, other forum users get upset and stop writing / reading / visiting the forum, so I still need to do something about it.

  4. If I just edit their messages and remove all unrelated emotions and keep useful information, the authors get very angry.

  5. I cannot rely on forum users clicking on flags either as very few of them feel comfortable to do so. In our mentality, flagging means being an informer, which nobody likes to do: a loose lip gets the first whip.

We already lost 2 knowledgeable users who used to write to the forum regularly and their materials were quite useful for the whole community.

So, I literally tried all I could come up with. Need more advice! What else should I try?

Badge preview working, badge assignment not working

0

@stevenpslade wrote:

Continuing the discussion from Badges not being assigned:

I originally posted the linked topic under support because I had the following badge query not working:

SELECT topics.id AS topic, posts.id AS post_id, users.id AS user_id, users.title, MAX(posts.like_count) AS like_count, CURRENT_TIMESTAMP granted_at
FROM topics
JOIN posts ON topics.id = posts.topic_id
JOIN users ON users.id = posts.user_id
WHERE posts.like_count > 0
AND users.title = 'Real Estate Agent'
AND (:backfill OR ( users.id IN (:user_ids) ))
GROUP BY topics.id, posts.id, users.id, users.title
HAVING MAX(posts.like_count) >= (SELECT MAX(p.like_count)
	FROM topics t
JOIN posts p ON t.id = p.topic_id
JOIN users u ON u.id = p.user_id
WHERE t.id = topics.id
GROUP BY u.id order by max desc limit 1)
ORDER BY MAX(posts.like_count) DESC

The query has present for weeks and the badge has not yet been assigned. The frustrating aspect of this is that the preview badge query lists X number of users who are set to get the badge. Furthermore, on my own backend using postgres, I can see the query returns the desired results.

In the linked topic, some suggestions were to try relating the post_id rather than the user_id, I tried this to no avail. What are the chances that there is a bug involved? In my mind, if the Discourse is telling me that badges are to be assigned in the preview, then it should work.

Make Discourse play nice on Windows XP while using letsencrypt.org

@iamntz wrote:

Hey guys, as you may heard, letsencrypt is launched already for a while. You may also know that letsencrypt doesn't quite work on Windows XP and some Android versions for various reasons. Long story short, it's not a browser issue, it's an OS issue.

However, the obvious solution would be to serve non SSL pages to Windows XP users and SSL pages for the rest of the users.

Buuuut... how it should be done?

One solution I can think of it is to route Discourse through Nginx (which is in plan anyway, because I want to host a static site as well on the same server) and add a condition to serve SSL pages only to supported OSes.

But then I have other two issues:

  • I can't disable use_https dynamically, right?
  • Discourse doesn't really care either if that checkbox is checked or not, it will redirect to https version if certificates are present (and if the SSL templates are enabled in the yaml config file?)

There is a way of dealing with this? (other than disabling SSL completely or buy a „real” certificate?)

Suggested new admin setting: send out message notifications immediately

0

@tobiaseigen wrote:

One of the things that keeps our community from using discourse more for day to day interaction is that it is not as immediate as email. In the ebb and flow of a workday it is jarring and odd to members that messages take so long to be delivered. So we still use cc lists in email or a google group for timely messages.

We value the ninja edit window and have it set to 10 mins for posts in discussions:

We would greatly value having another setting like this for messages to allow them to have a lower ninja edit window or none at all. Or the ability to have messages sent out immediately as are password reminder messages.

Notify users when they lose badges

@tobiaseigen wrote:

Over the weekend I accidentally gave a few members a badge by adding them to a group they should not be members of, which they then ceremoniously were informed about via a notification. Then they were not informed when I removed them from the group and subsequently their badge was taken away from them.

I think "Earned x badge" should be matched by a "Lost x badge" or some such (what's the antonym of earned?) so the user can be informed of what's going on with their badges.

Deploying discourse on server already running another rails app

@adass wrote:

Hi,

I am trying to deploy a docker discourse on a linux server already running an apache + passenger + rails application. First I thought it would be easy – just setup docker to use another port (8080), but then I found out that serving from non-default port creates some issues with assets like avatars Hosting on a non-default port causes catch-22.

So, do you had similar issue? How did you resolved it? All suggestions are welcomed :smile:

Prevent new user from posting before watching a video or reading a post?

@AlexBCodecademy wrote:

I run a developer community and people not posting code correctly along with not describing their issue thorough enough is driving me and my moderators up the wall. So I thought I could create an intro video that explains how to post code correctly and what you should include in your post to receive a response/help that is MANDATORY to watch (or a thread is mandatory to read) before you can post.

Does anyone have any ideas on how this could work?

Thank you!

Data retention policy implementation

0

@RGJ wrote:

One of our users asked us about the data retention policy that comes with Discourse (https://meta.discourse.org/privacy)

What is your data retention policy?

We will make a good faith effort to:
•Retain server logs containing the IP address of all requests to this server no more than 90 days.
•Retain the IP addresses associated with registered users and their posts no more than 5 years.

I was curious if the latter is actually implemented, and if so, where.
Not a big deal if it's not, since it won't matter before 2018 but still :slightly_smiling:

How to rename "Badge"

@Ad_Huikeshoven wrote:

Hi, I'm a admin at http://discourse.wmflabs.org/ , which is a pilot installation. I'm trying to figure things out. The discourse installation is meant as an alternative to wikimedia-l mailinglist. As the audience is wikimedians, mostly Wikipedia editors, some things have to be "localized". Wikipedians are accustomed to things called "Barnstars". These are a kind of "Badges", however those are manually assigned in stead of automatically, and those are called "Barnstars". So the question is how do I replace "Badge" with "Barnstar"?

Emails with attachments

@scombs wrote:

I wanted to check on the status of emails with attachments.

Currently, when a user posts or replies via email with an attachment, there is no error message sent to the user, and nothing is posted to the site (email blackhole).

For admins, a message appears in Admin/Emails/Rejected as "undefined method `number_to_human_size'" and an error is logged at /logs.

Is the email attachment feature currently supported? MOSS roadmap?

If not, can an email response to users with an error message be added?

I am migrating users from listservs, so this is my highest priority feature request. Thanks.
