While we can choose which field to order by when searching in advanced mode:

  • order:views

... we cannot choose whether we want to order ascending or descending.

Adding orderdesc modifier would easily make it possible:

  • orderdesc:views
  • orderdesc:latest
  • orderdesc:likes

SQL query to identify which users have not voted yet in which open polls

So, I'd like to invite people to vote in polls personally.
For this, I'd like to build an SQL query to identify in which polls and who have not voted yet.

To start with, how would I identify:

  1. the list of the polls - should I just search through messages with [poll token?
  2. who have voted / not voted for a particular poll

  3. I have run this query: SELECT DISTINCT name FROM post_custom_fields
    ...and got the following result, can someone explain what these names are about?

Add some punctuation to unordered lists in Discourse-in-Discourse oneboxing

@meglio wrote:

I just embedded one of my topics from Meta into another forum, here is hot it looks like:

While the original is very well structured and has multiple leve headings, the one-boxed version is really hard to read.

The experience can be easily improved by adding some punctuation in a one-boxed version:

  1. Add a "dot" after headings which don't have dots at the end, except if a list follows it.
  2. Add a • htmlentity on the beginning on every list item.
  3. Add a "dot" after the end of the list, if there is no punctuation at the end of it already (comma, dot, ; etc)
  4. In the excerpt being displayed in a one-box, identify the highest level of heading, if any (H1, H2 etc, which ever is the highest one), and make only those headings bold.

The fixed version would look like this:

Personal Page badge • Created a topic in a particular category • Wrote at least 1000 words in the topic (in one or multiple messages) • Wrote in the topic at least 10 days (non-consecutive) • Uploaded at least 10 images. Goal. In our forum, we have a category named "farms". Goat farmers, small to big, are welcome to create their own topic/page there to tell about their farm, upload photos, push news and answer questions ...

Just 4 simple tricks should improve readability greatly.

Upgrade page links to https://admin/upgrade

@Blaisorblade wrote:

Short version: on Discourse 1.4.3, the upgrade link now leads literally to the broken https://admin/upgrade (and I don't have admin as a hostname), both with the previous and the current docker_manager (if that makes a difference). This worked before, so it's confusing. Thankfully, it's a minor issue because I can't still use the correct URL https://FQDN/admin/upgrade.

My Discourse is behind reverse proxy, but I don't see config changes there that are obviously at fault.
Latest change I did was to the container .yml config, adding tiny as init process to workaround the bug in the AUFS kernel module.

What I did:

I'm running Discourse 1.4, and upgraded until 1.4.3. When trying to upgrade to 1.4.4, the upgrade link is to https://admin/upgrade instead of https://FQDN/admin/upgrade— not good.

But the latter page still "works" — upgrading Discourse is disabled, so I tried upgrading Docker manager hoping it'd help. This seems intended and normal, though the GUI does not show this dependency perfectly so I didn't know this would help — indeed, people do get stuck. But this is a minor (and orthogonal) usability issue, so I'll shut up

After that, the upgrade link still leads to https://admin/upgrade, but the correct URL works fine and allows me to complete the upgrade.

Importing posts from one forum to an existing discourse forum

@mcwumbly wrote:

Here's my situation:

  1. I've got a discourse instance up and running in a sort of beta / soft-release mode. There has about 200 active users at the moment and maybe ~ 10 posts/day
  2. Another existing forum is somewhat defunct, but has some activity still < 1 post / day

I have the basic implementation of the importer done, and I'm pretty happy with it. But I'd like to show a proof-of-concept to those who are currently active on this beta/soft-release discourse instance.

I'm thinking of starting by importing 1 topic first. This topic includes mostly partiicpants who have already created accounts on the new forum, but at least 1 user who has not:

First question: Is it possible to make users who do not already exist in the target forum staged accounts? If I do so, will that prevent them from getting digest emails until they create a real account? Are they able to choose the username they want later if they do create a proper account?

Second question: If I want to delete this topic and all its posts, is that as simple as group-selecting all the posts in the UI and deleting them? Or is there some other cleanup I should consider doing?

Assuming I get some buy-in on the initial proof-of-concept, I plan to run the full import... It's not huge, only about 500 topics. And it looks like the base importer already handles avoiding duplicates if I want to import new content that gets created in the defunct forum later since some of that is still trickling in.

I'm planning to import everything into one 'import' category which is hidden from the Latest page and then manually move things to their proper place over time with help from others in the community.

Last question: Do you see any gotchas or have any concerns with the plan I've outlined? Other things I should watch out for?

SQL to find the most N used words in all user messages per user

@meglio wrote:

By looking at the top 20..50 words used by a user, I hope to identify who cares about what the most, and then use the information to engage them in right topics and ask them right questions for better motivation.

What tables / columns would be useful for this task?

I suspect I should play with post_search_data.search_data, which is a tsvector, i.e. words and their frequencies per post. But if you think there's a better way, please advise!

Please could we get some commas in the number formatting in the "Stats" on the summary page?

Sign up and local authentication disappeared after enabling SSO-based authentication

@Raf wrote:

Greetings from Oxford

We have installed Discourse in one of our CentOS VMs and enabled SSO-based authentication using instructions and module provided by @fmarco76 in this post. I had to setup an SP and then authenticate using Oxford's Idp.

Upon enabling authentication the Sign up button and local authentication disappeared. The settings clearly state that allow local registration.

The enabled SSO configs are as follow (both URL to the server doing SSO and SSO Secret is commented out)

This is how the Discourse looks like, just Login button and when you click on that it will navigate you the SSO authentication page of Oxford.

Even though the Official SSO post claims about

What if I would like SSO in conjunction with existing auth?

I could not find any instructions to state why the local auth in my end disappeared. I basically would very much want to have something like below to allow both SSO and local authentication/signup (referenced from this article)

Majority of our users will be using SSO but, there will be a few who would require local login.

One last question maybe @fmarco76 could answer this if related to his module, with SSO enabled users simply login and everything works. How can I enable user account moderation with both SSO and local signups? In other words, if the user login for the first time using SSO then an admin should approve their account in order for them to be able to make posts (I want the same with local but, first I need to find a way to enable the local sign up).

TL;DR
Please advise how I can enable local signup/auth in conjunctions with SSO (it disappeared after enabling SSO) as well as enable user account moderation? Do I have to make any changes to any setting files, implement a new module, tweak x or y files, rebuild or bootstrap the app? Any hint/suggestion would be very much appreciate.

Cheers

Sick of old forum, considering starting a new one with Discourse

@gdelprete wrote:

Hi all,

I read an online forum which is unbelievably badly moderated. Or probably not moderated at all. I've reached a point of no return, and I'm seriously considering gathering with some users there to create a new forum. I'm evaluating Discourse. I'd need to know some facts:
1) for clarity, we need to provide users of the old forum with the ability to subscribe to the new one while keeping their username; what would be the best way to achieve this? Can it be achieved at all if I enable social log in?
2) are there features to limit double accounts, such as banning emails and social accounts?
3) is there support to understand if there are clones writing (ie. same person writing under two different accounts)?
4) can users be blocked for a period of time?

I'll probably come up with other questions in the coming days.

Edit: indeed...

5) can editing a post be disabled, or at least limited to a very short timeframe?

Display "current" like count in notification drop down

:heart: zogstrip "My brilliant topic"

This is great and all but gets very tiring, especially if you are operating in @zogstrip's timezone, he is always first to like and you have to keep visiting the topic if you want to get more internal validation.

Instead .... what if we updated this as likes come in (without mucking with order or anything)

Option 1

:heart: 7 "My brilliant topic"

Option 2

:heart: zogstrip, codinghorror and 2 others "My brilliant topic"

Option 3

Keep single name but always update it to "last" liker

:heart: (7) bob "My brilliant topic"

Any other ideas? :bulb:

How to create a plugin, that overrides the landingpage

$

@EndruK wrote:

Hi there

I want to write a plugin that overrides the landing page of my discourse-server in order to display another web-page but keeps the discourse header.
This is what I have done already:

  • created a plugin and a modified application.hbs with a new plugin-outlet and a button to test functions
  • created a simple Ember controller to handle the button click

My problem is that whenever I click on the test-button an error occurs that nothing is handled by my action.
Everything of the plugin.hbs shows up, but the function cannot be executed.
Did I forget something?
I followed this tutorial: Beginner’s Guide to Creating Discourse Plugins

This is my overridden application.hbs:

{{render "header"}}

<div id="main-outlet">
  <div class="container">
    {{#if showTop}}
      {{custom-html "top"}}
    {{/if}}
  </div>
  {{outlet}}
  {{render "user-card"}}
</div>

{{#if showFooter}}
  {{custom-html "footer"}}
{{/if}}

{{render "modal"}}
{{render "topic-entrance"}}
{{render "composer"}}
{{plugin-outlet "disraptor"}}

this is the plugin hbs:

<h1>Disraptor</h1>
{{#if connected}}
  <h2>connected</h2>
{{else}}
  <h2>not connected</h2>
{{/if}}
<div class="buttons">
  {{d-button label="disraptor.show" action="disraptorSwitch"}}
</div

and this is the controller:

export default Ember.Controller.extend({
  connected: true,

  actions: {
    disraptorSwitch() {
      console.log("test");
      return false;
    }
  }
});

Thanks for any help.
Greetings, André
