Max topics per day configuration setting

Unlike every other setting I've come across, setting max topics per day to zero does not disable it. Instead you need to set it to some arbitrarily high number.

Whether this is an intended behavior or not, it definitely surprised me to behave differently to most of the other settings.

Can we have a General Discourse Chat section please?

@AstonJ wrote:

I've always felt we are missing a section for more light-hearted or general talk about Discourse. I know we have uncategorized, but it is somewhat negative and doesn't encourage the sort of discussions a dedicated section would.

The sort of topics we could discuss:

  • What are your favourite plug-ins?
  • What are your favourite Discourse features?
  • Which Discourse sites do you use (apart from your own!)
  • Where would you like to see Discourse go from here?

Etc...

If the powers that be are not convinced.. why not trial it for a few months?

Nested category permissions

@clay wrote:

Let's say I have Category A and to participate, you have to be a member of Group A. We also have Category B, which is a sub-category of Category A. To participate, you have to be a member of Group B.

What I expected:

  • To view Category A, you have to be a member of Group A.
  • To view Category B, you have to be a member of Group B.

Reality:

  • To view Category A, you have to be a member of Group A.
  • To view Category B, you have to be a member of Group A and Group B. (this was a "gotcha" for me)

I understand the nested relationship of categories implies the nested permissions, but this isn't explicit in the category dialogue. I have users who are members of Group B but cannot see Category B. Now, however, what I'll need to do is to move Category B out from under Category A so that I can apply the proper permissions. While this isn't too big of a deal, it's diminishes the utility of hierarchical categories for me and is going to lead to a lot of additional clutter on the Category page.

Is that the desired cascading permission behavior? Should that be explicit in the Category setup page?

Why is email so hard?

So the entire installation is so smooth and amazing... until I get to the email setup.

I have looked and troubleshooted for hours but have come up with nothing.

Does anyone know of a stupid proof guide on how to setup the email?

At first I tried setting up a Postfix server and that didn't go well. I also tried some of those email services but got stuck.

I really love the look of Discourse and I want to use it.

So if someone could point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

I'm using an Amazon AWS Ubuntu 14.04 LTS instance.

After reinstaling Infinality at work (Gnome Ubuntu 15.10) the paragraphs of text are strange when you mouse over then. It's like it get re-rendered when hovered (maybe because the reply as linked on hover?).

PS.: This isn't a bug on Discourse probably, but since this is very annoying, I just want to know if someone else gets this too...

Notify on every like should be the default

$

@sam wrote:

I recently, and by recently mean yesterday... added a site setting for notifying more aggressively on likes:

Notify when liked:

  • Always
  • First time a post is liked and daily
  • First time a post is liked

With this change I deployed a new global default of Notify when liked: first time a post is liked and daily, this means that from now on, people will get notified on repeat likes if there is a day gap or more between subsequent likes on a post.

This protects users from a "swarm" of likes forcing a flood in notifications.

Having lived with notify always for almost a whole .... day... I think we are being a bit more conservative here than what we should be, and would recommend changing this setting to "Always" for quite a few reasons:

  1. Most users are lucky to have a handful of likes a day, if at all.

  2. It is a far better default for small communities or communities that are starting out.

  3. The longer we wait to change the default the more painful it becomes to change. Cause we end up overwriting settings a user may have opted in to.

  4. "First time a post is liked and daily" is arguably optimal for the most active of forum users, these are the types of users that muck with settings. We punish the general user base with a default that is best for the top percentage of users.

  5. More aggressive like notifications unlock a new dimension of interaction

    a. Oh ... 3 people just liked the post I just made, better go back and refine it.

  6. The UI can (and will) be further optimised to collapse like notifications on the same post, this is not blocking.

  7. This makes Discourse feel more "interactive"

Overall I would prefer just to go with the more aggressive default, and tweak the UI so it deals with storms better, at any point in time people can opt off the train if needed. The ones that need to opt off the train can easily do so.

I resisted this change for years, and in retrospect this was a mistake, I was trying to protect myself by punishing the vast majority of users.

Also missing an option, notify me of every like and notify me twice when @zogstrip likes me :slightly_smiling:

Anonymizing user keeps email address and real name

Fortsetzung der Diskussion von Love the "Anonymize User" feature - thanks!:

I have retested the anonymize user function on a second discourse install i run and on both boards once I press the "anonymize user" button in the admin view of the user the real name and the email address is kept as it was before and is not anonymized.

I've updated the installation (docker productive install) to the latest version (v1.5.0.beta11+250) to retest. As this happens on two independant installations I'll shift this into the bugs category.

This is a user after creation:

After pressing the "Anonymize" button discourse shows the "non existing" page (probably because the edited user does not exist with his username)

Looking at the result, that's the user data after anonymization:

Full email and user real name are still unchanged.

This is necessary to translate UI customizations.

I'm not using Cloudflare, just pure Discourse. No Nginx setup either. So I'm not sure why the 429 status is occuring...

Image Embedded Color Profile

@Patrick_David wrote:

Not sure if this showed up somewhere else (the search terms, color profile embedded return unassociated results.. :slightly_smiling: ).

I run a Free Software photography forum over at discuss.pixls.us. As you might imagine, we have users that are very particular about how their images are displayed.

One thing we ran into recently was problems on a thread about color management:

One of the photographers noticed that the functionality of fetching linked images and storing them locally seems to strip the color information from the images. While this may be fine to save space on most forums, for a photography forum this is a bit painful. :frowning:

To illustrate, this image has a rotated embedded color profile. It should show (Rot = Red, Grün = Green, Blau = Blue):

The source image I embedded in the post above can be found here:

https://houz.org/tmp/farbkreis.jpg

Here is the same image, uploaded directly to the forum:

Is the image processing being done with imagemagick? If so, is there any thought to possibly adding an option to convert uploaded image to sRGB and to tag them as such before saving?

(I'd be happy to investigate further if someone could point me to the relevant bits of code that handle image conversion when uploaded?)

Seeing repeated "[object object] flag it too" string below Reply line

@robreed wrote:

I first noticed this yesterday while writing a new post. It wasn't like that the day before. The reply line and icons are there, but it looks like some of the icons are missing (the heart for 'like this post' for example).

I noticed there was an update, so I tried updating. In the process I noticed a message that the bundler was out of date. So I tried rebuilding the container. That seemed to run through but at the end of the process my database seemed to be hosed. I created a separate topic for that issue and with help from @mpalmer and @Steven was already to recover to the point that I could restore from a Discourse backup. That involved deleting the database.

But now I'm back to the original problem. Here's the bit that seems odd to me. I restored from a database from 2016-0225 to steer well clear of the problem if it was something about the database. As I mentioned this wasn't an issue as late as 2016-0201.

So it seems odd to me that starting with a clean database and restoring from a backup created before the problem started would leave me in the same situation.

I'm attaching a screenshot so you can see what I'm describing.

Thanks for any insight and assistance.

UPDATE: I should also mention there's something wrong with the editing form. The 2 issues occurred at the same time. I haven't fiddled with the theme at all. I haven't even changed the logos for the site (though I realize I should do that). I haven't touched anything about the structure or presentation of the forum (no custom CSS/HTML, not even custom colors). Here's what that looks like:

For users this topic seems to be tracking this:

As an admin / moderator...

Whilst moderation / approval prior to posts initially being displayed is not required, knowing something has changed so it can be reviewed is important.

It's important to be able to know when every content change occurs for moderation purposes.

Some organisations require a "content review" for every piece of content on their site, even if occurs sometime later.

Is there any way of handling this currently?

Or list of posts recently "edited" outside of the initial ninja edit period...
... and perhaps receiving notifications for these?
