New "group" notification mode

@carlokok wrote:

I posted this here https://meta.discourse.org/t/get-notified-of-new-topics-but-not-posts/12809/36?u=carlokok

but that pretty much got lost. Would it be possible have a new group notification mode that posts about new topics but not for replies, unless the user actually replied to it?

The usecase is to pretty much make support handling perfect: We want to know when there are new posts, but once someone starts dealing with a post, it's that person job to finish it, the others shouldn't be notified of changes.

Traditional Permissions Setup vs Trust Levels?

@BigSlacker wrote:

Simply put I want to be able to manage the trust levels myself. Especially who can edit wiki articles.
Is this even feasible in the "open" system?

I need something like:
new users - can post in application forum only

once approved:
regular users - can post in several areas + can be invited to SIG special interest groups on the forum
execs - basically just another SIG + some moderator access
admins - full moderators (usually a subset of the execs)

Doable? :open_mouth:

Hello,
I can't see my discourse page at the usual page (ceprovamos.tk), I can see only the default Apache2 Ubuntu Default Page.

I had forgotten to pay the cloud service and they stopped my server. Then I payed and restarted the server. Now my discourse disappeared and I can see only this default page, advising me to replace the file /var/www/html/index.html, but I don't know how.
Obviously before this inconvenient Discourse was working perfectly.

If I do
cd /var/discourse/launcher start app
the answer is:
Error response from daemon: Cannot start container app: failed to create endpoint app on network bridge: Error starting userland proxy: listen tcp 0.0.0.0:80: bind: address already in use
Error: failed to start containers: [app]

As you noticed I have a quite poor knowledge of website administration...

Warn user when entering mail address for category that exists for group

When you have a mail address attached to a group and later attach that same address to a category, you won't get a confirmation. The incoming mails will go to the group.

On small forums it's easy to find where that address is, but on bigger forums with multiple admins you get lost.

Allow non-admin to edit category logo, details

Hi

I cannot find any documentation to allow users to edit their category logo without being an admin.

Is this possible? We have clans in our game and wanted to let the leader(s) of the clan to edit their own category logo, description etc.

We would rather avoid making them admins if possible, this is the only elevated privilege they should have.

Different behaviour of text direction for not logged-in visitors

@Pad_Pors wrote:

we have set the discourse language to Persian and so the right to left direction. but for not logged-in visitors the system is in the left to right and non-translated option.

why? because i've selected "Allow users to choose their own language interface preference" option so that admin can use the English language (the Persian-translation of admin panel is not understandable).

if I un-select the option (Allow users to choose their own language interface preference), everything is fine. but until we can set better translation, we need this option.

is there a way to keep the landing page for not logged-in users in rtl-direction & Persian? (the
default locale)

Hi there!

We have recently started using Discourse and our community is growing quite fast eve.community
Right now we want to reward all of the existing users with possibility to invite their friends. I have 2 questions i tried everything possible already :slight_smile:

1) Can we allow all of the users including trust level 0 to invite others?
2) In case if answer to the first question is no, then how can we make all the users level 2 by default (not the new ones but the existing ones) How can we do that except for one by one.

Help is very appreciated guys!

Blank topics page when interface language is German

@gerhard wrote:

Since this morning, I'm getting a blank page when I visit meta.discouse.org as long as I'm using German as interface language. I can't test this anywhere else right now (try.discourse.org doesn't allow users to change the interface language), but it's definitely a problem here on meta.

Steps to reproduce:

  • Go to the user preferences
  • Change the interface language to "de"
  • Go back to the topic list and refresh the page

It seems to work with "ru", but it looks like "fr" doesn't work either.

How do I remove post approval?

I'd like to allow all users whether they're new or old to be able to post anything without it being approved. Currently all users cannot post anything instantly and have to wait for an approval by a moderator. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

Cannot upgrade from admin interface

@skoota wrote:

Hi All,

For quite some time (around the last year) I have not been able to upgrade Discourse from the admin interface. Whenever an upgrade is available the "Upgrade to the Latest Version" button is greyed out as docker_manager says it is "Currently Upgrading" - but it never finishes (starts?) and when I click the button to check the status it just shows a blank black window.

I am able to upgrade via the CLI doing a manual pull and rebuild, and when I do this and go back into the upgrade section of the user interface it shows everything as up-to-date. However, I thought I should finally fix this problem so that I can upgrade from the admin interface and don't have to do a manual upgrade each time.

Any suggestions would be welcome, thanks!

Add user to staff without them being a moderator or an admin

@Freso wrote:

I have a user on a Discourse site I've recently set up I would like to have access to the topics in the "Staff" category, but I do not want them to have neither "moderator" nor "administrator" powers on the site. It seems like the "staff" group is separate from the moderator and admin groups, but is unassignable on its own. Is there a way that I'm missing to add them to the "staff" group? (Or do I need to move the topics from the Staff category to another category where I designate my own access rights?)

New User Notification WITHOUT Approval

@brianlcheek wrote:

It's clear that the admin would receive notification once per day that there are new users awaiting approval, but what if we don't want to approve users but still want to be notified when they register?

Is this enabled somewhere and I missed it or can it be easily added?

Thanks!
Brian

p.s. or is there any plan to let admins create users...then this is moot for us.

Continuing the discussion from Show recipient/sender in PM list:

In a regular topic, the title bar shows the context of that topic

But a PM shows no context

For that, you have to scroll to the first post and look at the topic map

Why not show the participants there?

(collapsing to just avatars in the case of a long list, with a drop-down ellipsis for a really long list)

Where/how to discuss a Discourse trial?

@Rob_Nicholson wrote:

I'm a long time user of the StackExchange suite of web sites and I'm (sadly) very familar with the etiquette over there. I'm currently helping trial Discourse as a potential eplacement for phpBB for CAMRA - a UK beer consumer organaistion with over 170,000 members.

I'd like to be able to ask some questions about the system but to be honest, haven't got time to individually research them and a far more effective solution (for me) is to ask you - the experienced users.

Some I may be repeating which would be slammed down on by the StackExchange moderators which to be honest is very off putting.

I'm hoping that the atmosphere is a little more relaxed as this is a discussiuon system but thought I'd ask before I jump in.

Thanks, Rob

Currently wikipedia.(org|com) is hardcoded in wikipedia_onebox.rb, but there are plenty of other MediaWiki driven sites for which this onebox would (or should!) work just the same.

It would be neat if it could be made possible to whitelist other sites/URLs to get parsed by this onebox.

Multiple topics in single API request

$

@Andrew_Byrne wrote:

Using the Discourse API is pretty cool and I've used it to provide a number of custom interrogations in related sites. One thing that has caused me some issues is the fact I need to make single requests on each topic via:

GET discourse.foo/t/topicID/1234.json

for most Discourse systems this is cool but I am blending results, ie requesting multiple topics and adding them to a single post feed. when the number increases the requests become.... annoying.

I'm looking for a solution something along the lines of the user_actions that accepts a filter. like:

GET discourse.foo/t/topicID/topic.json?filter=1234,5678,90123

Not sure if this exists or a plugin is required.
