Where to see if discourse can do what I want?

@JimmyX wrote:

I want to build a web site where people post an item; image, video, piece of text. There will be 3 buttons under the item (items represents a proposition) agree/neutral/disagree.

You select your label (agree/neutral/disagree) and all comments of that type, for this item, appear. There will be a button for you to add comments of this type

It would be good if each of the comments could be replied to agree/neutral/disagree.i.e. the comments would be a tree.

Would such a thing be possible with discourse?

Why is there a character limit on text-based flags?

@Drew_Warwick wrote:

I'm not sure if this a bug or by design, so I wasn't sure where to categorize the topic. I ended up going with feature though since this isn't exactly preventing me from using Discourse normally (normally I don't send > 500 character long flags).

When you flag > send message, you end up with a 500 character limit:

But when you PM someone from their profile, there isn't a character limit, so I'm not sure why there's one on the flag PMing. Maybe because all flags with custom text (send message and something else) have a character limit and no exception was added to send message? Regardless, it seems a bit odd that PMing someone from their profile doesn't have a character limit, but PMing someone through a flag does.

I'm also not sure why flagging a post for "something else" needs a character limit. Moderators aren't going to remove someone from the forums if I flag a users' most recent post bashing the staff / parent site and tell them "Trust me, this guy has been doing this forever. He should be removed." -- the staff can't just take my word for it, but if I submit a long list of posts of him doing this, that's much more believable. Unfortunately, I can't submit a long list of evidence with the character limit. If the "something else" character limit exists for UI reasons (bad user experience to be typing out > 500 character PMs in that small flag text box), it'd be nice if we could pop it out into a full editor. If the limit exists because "flags shouldn't normally exceed 500 characters or else there's too much fluff" or something like that, it'd be nice if that could be taken a look at again.

How to customize registration form? Or at least email format?

@kalihman wrote:

Hello, I am currently building a community website that only accept the student from my campus. What I'm trying to do is to customize the email format of the registration form. Every student in my campus has one's own email address that is identified by student id. So, I would like to receive only the student id and I can send confirmation email to the student without knowing the whole address (and also great to defend spammers).

I used to be a express/nodejs developer and new to the ruby on rails framework (interested in learning emberJS though). Is it possible to change the form by changing source code? Or this kind of approach is entirely prohibited/impossible? Thank you!!

Image Onebox breaks on Wikimedia links

@phw wrote:

If you link to Wikimedia with a link like https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stones_members_montage2.jpg the image onebox is triggered, trying to display this link as an image (which it isn't, it is just the info page about that image):

There are two possible solutions:

  1. Just ignore links to common.wikimedia.org in the image onebox
  2. Use the Wikipedia API to get the actual link to the image itself

The latter requires an additional request, the resolved URL looks something like https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/af/Stones_members_montage2.jpg/250px-Stones_members_montage2.jpg . Not sure whether this should be added to the existing image onebox or if there should be a separate wikimedia onebox. I have some crude code to do the conversion from the commons.wikimedia.org URL to the actual image URL here:

Tag creation permissions (or: please create an education tag)

@pfaffman wrote:

I'm especially interested in how Discourse can support learning and schools. I thought that I might start tagging education related posts (like this one with an education tag, but found out that I'm not worthy. Any interest in an education tag?

(In other news, I am pleased to learn that there is a min trust to create tag setting and went and upped it on my site. Now to clean out those bogus tags that shouldn't have been created.)

Broken images in production after importing backup

@alehandrof wrote:

I am migrating a community from another forum software. I did the import on a local Vagrant instance, as recommended. But now that I've uploaded the database on my production site (in Docker) all the images are broken because their URLs are of this form:

//localhost:3000/uploads/default/optimized/1X/7f141a017abb4d79fa88f2a47472197bfe7e2f6d_1_511x500.jpg

Is there a way to "search and replace" or otherwise correct the image URLs in bulk? :sweat:

Automatic UpScrolling on a Topic when entering editor

@AnonymousPerson wrote:

Hello! So recently, I have experienced some weird things on our hopscotch forum. Whenever I post something (in the writing phase) the topic automatically scrolls up, and then my keyboard lags. (And in many cases, crashes). This has been happening a LOT, and started from last week. Anything that I can do to stop it? Sometimes it drives me crazy! O_o
Thanks!

What's the timeline for improving messaging?

@tobiaseigen wrote:

There are a handful of missing messaging features that are becoming increasingly urgent for us, and I think the discourse team probably agree they need to happen but they are lower on your priority list than ours. Is there anything I can do to help speed it up, besides becoming a hosting customer? :innocent:

These are the most pressing ones:

Split into two settings: "Who can message and @mention this group?"

@tobiaseigen wrote:

We use groups actively in our community but are only gradually rolling out group messages, especially while some key messaging features are not yet in place. We also don't intend to use all of them for messaging anyway, but rather use them for permissioning and mentioning in discussion topics.

So it would be a big help to be able to have separate settings for mentioning and messaging so they can be different.

Notify administrators of new settings on upgrade

@pfaffman wrote:

It would be nice if there were a mechanism that notified the admin of new settings when they appear. I would like to have known sooner about tl3 time period. I usually at least scan the commits in github, but lots of admins surely don't.

When you do an upgrade in Moodle, it makes you take a look at new settings so that you can see that they are how you like them.

Such a mechanism could be handy for users too when their settings change. For example, if there were such a mechanism in place when the like settings changed recently people could be directed to check them out when they next visited.

Any way to load more than 50 search results per query?

@Drew_Warwick wrote:

If I search for user:sam and click on "show more", the full search page only shows 50 results, displaying "No more results found." afterwards. He's posted a total of 9716 times (including topics), so 50 is nowhere near close to the total amount. Is there any way to load more posts? The particular reason I'm trying to load more than 50 posts on such a broad query is I want to know how many times a particular user has said a given word and how many times it's been used over the lifetime over the forum.

Hi,

Earlier I had enabled Tracking for a particular category. I wasn't receiving new topic or post emails. As soon as I enabled Send me an email for every new post I started receiving email notification of for all topics and posts.

How are these two related?

Is the only difference between tracking and normal is that tracking adds a count of new replies is shown?

Thanks.

People,

I am trying to do an installation on a new DO server with Fedora 23 x86_64 but get a long way into:

./launcher bootstrap app

before it finally stops with:

FAILED
--------------------
RuntimeError: cd /var/www/discourse && su discourse -c 'bundle exec rake assets:precompile' failed with return #<Process::Status: pid 1290 exit 137>

I found only one mention of this for a guy who was trying to install on CentOS and he gave up and used something else . .

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Phil.

As a Member, how many people can I start a group PM with?

0

@Drew_Warwick wrote:

I plan on PMing a number of site admins regarding the behavior of a particular user on our Discourse forum. I'd also like to add a couple other regular members to the PM to give testimony about the user so it's clear I'm not the only one who thinks this way of him. In total, I'd hope to include ~5 admins and up to 10 other users. The only issue I think I may run into is a potential limit on how many people can participate in the group PM. The "What do trust levels do" thread doesn't specify a limit, but with limits on similar features (cc'ing someone @theirname), so I wouldn't be surprised if there was a limit on how many people I could include in a group PM.

Is there such a limit? If so, what is it (or at least the default setting)?
