I run Discourse on my own AWS account and it runs on Ubuntu EC2, ElastiCache Redis, and RDS Postgress.

It ran well when using discourse 1.5 and I upgraded to 1.6.

Before: v1.5.0.beta13b +140
After: 1.6.0.beta1

After upgrading to 1.6 using # launcher rebuild app, the web browser cannot display ant pages. Here is the screenshot of Chrome Developer Tool:

Blank topic names?

Hello! Recently, a weird glitch occured on The Hopscotch Forum. A topic was made with the title "Secret "Unread" Tab", but the name glitched out and was blank:

(It's the blank one. As you can see, someone else made another topic about this, so it isn't just me.)

When you try to edit the title, the correct title appears in the text box but, even if you change the title, when you click accept the title is blank again. Here is a look inside the topic:

And when you get a notification in the topic it is also blank:

Has anyone else experienced this? How can I fix it? If you need any other information, just ask.

A way to display or discover the Topic title on the mobile UI?

@ljpp wrote:

I administrate a sports forum (Tappara.co, in Finnish), ice hockey to be more specific. While we are trying to push for high thread granularity, many of the discussed topics naturally relate to each others: Players, coaches, games, referees are all pieces of the same puzzle and often you cannot discuss one without the other.

There has been some feedback lately about the fact that the topic title is not shown on the mobile UI. This is totally understandable due to the limited screen real estate, but in our scenario it is actually a very valid point. Sometimes it is not immediately apparent whether the Topic deals with a specific game (FLA vs TBL), individual (Alexander Barkov Jr), or something about the big picture (Best centers in the NHL). I would assume this usability issue is even more valid if you land to a Topic via Google.

Currently there are two ways I am aware of to discover the Topic title on mobile:

  • Check the browser URL for clues
  • Have a look at the top of the thread (our threads are long)

Neither of these are ideal. Any ideas how to improve this for our community?

White-listing for incoming group email - "Auto-Submitted: auto-generated"

I'm toying with the idea of managing PayPal / Shop orders to come though to a "group inbox" so several users could manage incoming orders.

Currently this is not possible because of the recent positive additions for the detection of emails not sent my humans (with email headers like Auto-Submitted: auto-generated).

Perhaps there would be a case for white-listing domains and specific email addresses that would be allowed to by-pass these recent detections?

Doesn't anybody else see a use-case for themselves?

Staged users / group inbox - unexpected / pointless email content

I've been using Help Scout for a long time and one of things I really like is:

Customer Support Software with a Personal Touch

When you respond to your customers from Help Scout, they receive a normal email. There's no ticket number to remember or customer portal to login to.

The emails really just look like an normal email from a human.

I've been testing Discourse's group inbox to see what the results are...

A couple of things stood out to me which basically come down to the following being displayed under the message :

  1. plain text email

    Posted by DeanMarkTaylor on 04/10/2016

  2. HTML email

    Reply to this email to respond

Both of these seem pointless:

  1. You have received the email in an email client it shows the date.
  2. "Reply to this email to respond" well yes, this is an email - I'm in an email client - I know how to email.

I'm used to using Hopscotch Forum, as @Nick_S @buildasnowman, and @MobCraft may know, and I've tried some things and apparently, cuss words aren't blocked. I get why they are blocked on Hopscotch Forum because of little kids there, but were all used to cussing, right? The bloody Askimet may be blocking certain posts from new users because of cussing, but I don't get why our posts have to be reviewed by an admin the second we post them. There's many people here... Anyways, I just wanna know why cussing isn't blocked here. @Sam? @CodingHorror?

"Gives Back" descriptions are inaccurate

Long description:

This badge is granted when you've received 100 likes and have given 100 or more likes in return. Thanks for paying it forward, and liking in return!

Issue:

Receiving 100 likes is not the same as having 100 liked posts. I can have 10 posts, each liked 10 times = 100 likes in total, but only 10 liked posts.

Unneeded search refresh in text overriding screen

  1. Search for a translation key
  2. Ctrl+A to select the whole search term
  3. Extra search will be carried again - but no needed for it as the text has not been changed.

The same issue whatever keys I press in the search box that do not change the text. It would be better to check if the text has changed after a key press to decided whether a new search should be carried again.

"Crazy in Love" badge - numbers are "hardcoded" in the text despite the likes-limit variance

The badge says:

This badge is granted when you use all 50 of your daily likes for 20 days. Wow! You're a model of regularly encouraging your fellow community members!

However, how many likes I can give depends on my trust level. So the description looks confusing.

You have not completed all user fields UX on signup should be improved

@sam wrote:

Guess what I did not fill?

That's right ... good guess:

Instead:

  1. We should at least scroll it so the field that is not filled in is on the screen

  2. We should possibly make error message more specific: "You have not completed the Sector field".

Also:

We should stop doing this:

Button should not be disabled ever, just pop an error that teaches users why they can not create an account.

Is there any way to restore your site from backup in the terminal?

@Ankhamax wrote:

I did a backup of my site before I upgraded to the latest version of the discourse however I can't even access my site any more even though the upgrade appears to be successful as no error is displayed. Is there anyway that I can restore my site from the backup that I created earlier from terminal app as I can't access the site?

  1. Is it possible?

  2. If yes, where do discourse save or store the backups that I executed from the admin panel?

  3. Is there any guide on how to restore the site from backup?

Thanks

Sending email to activate account?

@fantasticfears wrote:

Email providers may fail to send an email. Confirmation email may lost on the way. In some conditions, polling a mailbox may much reliable rather than sending an email.

Can we have an option to let user sending an email to Discourse if polling enables. Says:

If you still encounter a problem, send a email to 'poll+{key}@discourse.org' to activate your account. You may have to wait for several minutes for activation.

The setting generate a token for incoming activation of email and should be set to invalid after activation.

When user sends an email to that address, Discourse can confirm the validaity of email.

There's a bunch more instruction for reading, thus:

  • setting is off by default
  • have to set polling
