Show recipient in "sent" personal messages

I really like the improvements to the PM system, except for sent messages, where we're pretty much back to this issue:

At the moment, messages display my avatar (maybe unnecessarily; it's my sent box, after all), but do not display the recipient unless they reply. Most messages I send are moderation messages, where the vast majority go unanswered. So my "sent" box has hundreds of messages with only my avatar, and no easy way to distinguish one from another.

Recipient should always be shown for sent messages, IMHO, regardless of replies.

Allow searching of Moderators messages

Continuing the discussion from New Messaging Workflow:

"Moderators" messages are now separated out from other messages, which is A Good Thing. However, there is no longer any way to search them, which is A Bad Thing. We (or at least I) used search extensively to find previous discussions on problem members/links/sites etc., and losing access to over 2,000 messages in this way is a major issue.

Please could "Moderators" messages (and its associated archive) be made searchable?

Jobs are stuck in Sidekiq after a restart

@sam wrote:

I meant to post this to @mperham on twitter but it does not really fit in a tweet :slight_smile: Quite a few times we have notice a "stuck" sidekiq. All the jobs in the queue appear to be "stuck" in a running state forever.

I managed to isolate what is causing it today and would like some tips on how to correct it. It appears the "identity" of job's owner is determined based on hostname:PID If you hang-up a processor Sidekiq "detects" that a hostname:PID is not around about 20-30 seconds after its is terminated. When that happens it will clear all the jobs it thought that hostname:PID owned.

However in a docker world we are able to do very quick restarts that very often maintain the same hostname:pid after restart before Sidekiq detects that the old job processor died. This sequence leaves us with jobs that appear to be running forever.

This issue has popped up many times on many customers and internally, but we never really picked up on the reason till now. I guess my questions are:

  1. Can we amend sidekiq so it uses an additional piece of data for job processor identity, eg: hostname:PID:guid ?

  2. Can we improve our shutdown sequence to cleanly clear the currently running jobs?

  3. Any other ideas? (timeout can work here, but it will have a very delayed effect)

Note: we can not use any of the Sidekiq professional or enterprise features as we need the fix to apply to all Discourse open source users.

Undesired Outcome of Images in Summarized Category Topics

0
0

@Sern wrote:

Continuing the discussion from Edit Category > Images > Logo & Background Image Issue (1.4.3 and 1.5):

Please refer to this topic as a reference for what I will describe in more detail below.

How it Works Now

  • "About this category" topics are automatically 'summarized', as shown below, as soon as a category logo image is added.
  • Any content near the top of the "about this category" topic gets automatically summarized when a logo image is present.
  • Images near the top of such a topic also get included in this summary and, in all cases I've tested, take up the entire summary space so no text will be included.

Why I think this is not desirable.

  • It does not appear that images at the top of these category summarized topics get scaled down or made into thumbnails, as other images are. This can result in larger images taking up a massive amount of space, to the point where they may even appear to take up the whole background. Hence my prior misconception in the topmost linked topic.
    • This certainly causes an undesirable warping of the normal forum layout.
  • Images will, in all cases I've tested (not many), take up the entire summary, excluding any valuable informative text.
  • Depending upon the image and contents of the "about this category" topic, such summarization functionality could result in confusion, especially in limited use cases or those unfamiliar with the mechanic.
  • An image does not always add anything constructive to the summary area. It is meant to be seen only in the topic itself. Admittedly, there are times where an image could provide constructive info in a summary.

Why not just remove the image or move the image to the bottom?

Actually, I did try the second option, but I'm not a fan at all. Images are often shown as a sort of introduction to a topic. They ease you into the discussion, provide some eye candy, and ground those visually centric folks like myself. All of this is especially true for "about this category" topics. They present an entire subject matter. In my mind, it makes sense to start such an endeavor with some kind of imagery representative of the topic. So having the image anywhere below the top of the topic is a no no in my book. And let's keep in mind, this is only a potential issue for "about this category" topics which are summarized via the inclusion of a category logo image.

My Proposed Changes

  • Default Behavior: Images added to the top of summarized "about this category" topics appear as
    • [image] Insert summarized text following the image here.
    • This ensures that text summaries take precedence. The presence of the image is still portrayed (as text) without being obstructive or obtrusive to the user's view.
      • In fact, IIRC, this is how images in summaries used to be handled by default.
  • But how do we accommodate users who prefer alternate functionality, such as those who do want images to appear in full in the summary?
    • I do understand that too many settings, especially those cluttery type ones with little effectual change are not not desirable. However, perhaps a per category setting specifically for "about this category" topics and how they handle images could be included? Or is this something that could simply be handled via formatting?
      • I can see instances where a global setting lacks flexibility.
    • Some users may want some categories to display images in full for summaries, while others would not.

Discourse in a closed intranet

I have been trying to get Discourse running in a closed Intranet. Unfortunately it seems a bit of a futile endeavor. I have got it working in my Lab which does have internet access. But when I move my VM over to my intranet I need to make changes to the app.yml requiring a rebuild. When I do it tries to access github, to pull pups and then fails to bootstrap. Anyway to get Discourse as an offline installer?

I really like Discourse and I would really like to get it to run in my environment. I really don't want to have to resort to phpBB instead :grimacing:

Ability to connect with OAuth providers when user is registered?

@fantasticfears wrote:

Some OAuth2 providers don't provide email thus user have to fill the form to login. After filling out the signup form, a new user will be created and connected with this provider.

But that situation hurts when a user have been registered, it can't connect with this OAuth2 provider.

In particular, a customer comes to me for building a integration with an external service for Discourse. Therefore, I am willing to have a way to let user connect with a Oauth2 provider in the user settings as well as an endpoint.

In the user setting, a pile of login method buttons will be shown after the email section. Existing association can have different style or status information.

But even admin panel can only show official oauth providers information (whether user registered with google, facebook, twitter, yahoo, github). So a little extension to inject for plugin authors is also needed.

This should be disabled by default.

How to restrict account changes when authenticating with Google?

@Philip_Colmer wrote:

We're setting up Discourse for internal company use. All employees have a Google mail account with the same domain. I've configured our server to use Google oAuth and it is working but there is a slight problem ...

What I want to do is ensure that when users sign up for Discourse with their company Google account, they are not allowed to change their username or full name. I've set "username change period" to 0, turned off "email editable" and selected "full name required".

However, the user can still change both fields. Is it possible to stop that or is that just not supported in the current version?

Installing discourse on Centos 7

I have a developer who is going to help me install discourse on my server. Currently I have Centos 6.6, and he was planning to upgrade to Centos 7 in order to be compatible with discourse, but is now saying that I should install Ubuntu instead, because this is supported by discourse. Is there then an advantage to installing it on Ubuntu? Can I install it successfully on Centos 7?

Thanks,

Ghost RSS Import Not Displaying Content Correctly

@ethan_iel wrote:

Sorry if this has been answered already, but I've tried to look high and low for my issue regarding my Ghost RSS import.

Currently on my discourse forum is able to create new topics and and appropriately links to my blog site. But on import, it either cuts off the full blog text or imports the entire post as a single paragraph block.

My discourse blog is pointed at my ghost's rss feed and I have no CSS selectors enabled in options for embedding.

Any ideas what may be causing this?

Certain info strings on fenced code blocks break formatting between the blocks

0

@DavidEGrayson wrote:

I just encountered a bug while I was writing a post on a Discourse-powered forum and would like to report it.

It seems like if I have two fenced code blocks with an info string of "{.cpp}", where each block starts with a line equal to "```{.cpp}" and ends with a line equal to "```", then any text formatting between the two blocks of code does not work at all, and we see the markup instead of seeing nicely-formatted text. See below for an example:

// Here is a block of C++ code.

For some reason we cannot have `monospace`, _italic_, **bold**, or [link](https://example.com) text in this paragraph, which is between two blocks of C++ code. In fact, I can't find any other Markdown, BBCode, or HTML that does work in this area. We can't even have multiple paragraphs.

// Here is a second block of C++ code.

A workaround for this is to remove the {.cpp} info string on the first code block, but of course that destroys the code highlighting in that first block. I couldn't find any better solution even though I tried info strings of ".cpp", "cpp", and "c++".

I made a copy of this post as a Gist so you can see the markup I used and verify that it works correctly in GitHub-flavored Markdown.

Profile Background Image Issues

@MelissaK wrote:

I have several users who are experiencing issues with their background images not displaying fully. (See attached screenshot.)

In looking at the CSS, it seems like the background color of the About Me section is really what's covering up the image. (The users experiencing this issue have long About Me sections).

.user-main .about .details {
background: #fff !important;
}

Can I get some guidance here -- would the recommendation be to change the CSS (not our preference) ask Users to limit the length of their about me (a poor option) or can your recommend a pixel size for Profile Background image to work within these constraints? For example, if the default width of Profile Background is 850px, what is the recommended height?

Any insights would be deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Status of anchor link bug

@Rob_Waters wrote:

Continuing the discussion from Intra-post anchor links don't work in Safari / Firefox:

What is the status on this issue? Hyperlinks with anchors don't work, and when you include the whole URL in the post body, Discourse automatically converts it to a hyperlink that also doesn't work. The only solution I've found is to include the whole URL and use the preformatted text option so it can be copied & pasted, which obviously isn't ideal.

Last question, If I have a WP account, but I have not created a Discourse account for it, and am publishing a WP post with "Post to Discourse", who is the author on Discourse? What is the best way for my WP authors to publish on Discourse through WP?

A total count of bookmarks in profile summary?

Hey all. Love the changes to Discourse since my last visit. The summary page be lookin' nice; badges; new features. Hell yeah. Respect. :pray:

Any spot where I can get a total count of my bookmarks? I be the collectin' type. I like my memorabilia with proper tally, yh' see.

Silliness aside, my suggestion--if this not already on the ui somewhere--would be to add a total bookmark count to that awesome new summary page design; under stats. At least in a more conspicuous spot.

Otherwise, I did my usual pedantic hunting in the ui territory this tally would logically be, if it existed. No coup d'etatin' my ego; nothing worse than posting and finding out it was somewhere in that pesky plain sight. Aye. Help me out 'ere. Much obliged.

Oddly it seems very similar to this bug referenced back in '13: https://meta.discourse.org/t/invite-notification-email-is-from-topic-op-author-not-inviter/37883

It would seem that in the USER_NOTIFICATIONS.INVITED_TO_TOPIC_BODY Text Content in Discourse, %{username} just needs to be changed to %{invitee_name}

If I knew how to submit a PR I would :confused:
