Staged accounts in private messages

Consider this situation:

Alice writes a PM to Bob. Then, Alice invites Charlie to the conversation using Charlie's mail address, because Charlie has not yet an account.

I expected that Charlie gets a mail with all former content and can reply by mail. I also expected that Charlie receives, once it accessed the web page to accept the invitation, all further replies to the PM until Charlie hat created a full account by setting a password.

I thought this would be the behaviour of users writing to topics per mail that allow anonymous (staged) users.

Is there a setting or which workflow allows so far to have conversations with many people only known by mail that do not want to care for a full account?

Unencrypted usernames in shared links break anonymity

@ljpp wrote:

Most forums operate with a level of user anonymity - usernames are used instead of real names. The social sharing functions of Discourse however show the username in an unecrypted format, such as:

https://meta.discourse.org/t/s3-upload-bucket-cdn-url-and-bucket-name-in-cname/42549/2?u=ljpp

?u=ljpp

Now if I would share this link using the Discourse's built in function, using my real-name Facebook or Twitter account, it is very easy for anyone to make the connection in between the real person and my username on the forum.

The usernames in the shared URL should not be in clear text format, but hidden/encrypted in some way. Or is there some other unique identifier you could use?

Also I am not sure where collecting the statistics of the users making shares is all that important. Perhaps more interesting data would be that whose posts are most shared? So the username identifier should be of the post author, not the one doing the sharing.

What happens to users on the system when upgrading Discourse?

This might be a noob question but is there a way for me to see if there are currently active users on the system? The reason I ask is because I would like to upgrade my Discourse install but I do not want to cause interruptions for people who might be writing posts or or reacting to topics.

Weird new double line in footer of email notifications

Multiple tooltips on same target are confusing

@TechnoBear wrote:

Unsurprisingly, I'm not much given to trying to access tooltips. However, after our recent upgrade to latest, I was trying to check what information was being displayed in the redesigned message pages - which have no column headings - and attempted to use the tooltips. After some considerable time of carefully aiming my mouse at the number and seeing a tooltip which displays only that same number, I eventually discovered by accident that I needed to aim away from the number to get the actual information I wanted.

Some further research here indicates this is a problem in the "replies" column site-wide. The number is wrapped in a span which has title="number", and that sits inside a td which has title="this topic has X replies etc". So to access the more detailed information, you need to hover away from the number. Confusing and unhelpful, IMHO.

I can see no reason for the title on the <span>, which merely duplicates the information, so perhaps this could be removed?

Help finding some monthly site stats about topics and user trust levels

I'd like to track the following stats on a monthly basis and am finding them hard to find retroactively. I'd be grateful for any advice on how to proceed - maybe others would also be interested.

  1. Number of topics started this month, with participation of at least one member who is not in a certain group.

  2. Number of members in TL1 group this month.

  3. Number of members in TL2 group this month.

Not like Anspress, SabaiDiscuss

@Rohit_Manglik wrote:

I invested last few days in comparing all Discussion platforms. Though I loved Discourse, I still have following integration queries.

1) In Wordpress can we integrate whole topic as a page. Whatever I understood till now, we can integrate Discourse only as comments but not as a complete page.

2) Shortcodes - Do we have any Wordpress Shortcodes to put any particular post or list all posts of that category in the site.

3) Profile - In our website we already have a few tabs, can we integrate those tabs and Discourse tabs in one.

4) Widgets - Do we have any WP widgets (or any easy way to create them). e.g. Latest Posts, Most reputation etc.

5) Integration with current theme as SabaiDiscuss, Anspress etc. I.e. w/o redirecting to another site for everything. Till now I understood that Wordpress and Discourse can work as two different engines. Discourse cannot work inside Wordpress (as SabaiDiscuss, Anspress etc do). Am I understanding the functionality correctly?

Possible 1.6.0 beta 1 Email Replies Bug - But Nothing in the Logs

@yyhmsg wrote:

I've had no problems with email replies via pop3 gmail setup up to lately. Then today I saw the following error in the dashboard:
Some problems have been found with your installation of Discourse:
Email polling has generated an error in the past 24 hours. Look at the logs for more details.

But I can't find anything in the logs that seems relevant? Any tips to debug would be helpful.

I did login manually to my replies account and then unfortunately discourse sent replies for every single reply that had ever been sent - even the ones that were sent previously including all private messages. This is where I think there might be a bug in the email reply function in 1.6.0 beta 1, but I don't know exactly how to go about debugging this....

I need ideas for a migration strategy from dual logins and phpBB to new SSO and Discourse

@Hewitt wrote:

We are replacing an old website that had a membership system and a phbBB forum (with separate accounts). The new system we are working on now will have a SSO to the website itself. What I would like to do is this:

  1. Migrate the old site users to the new site's auth system
  2. When the user is logged in, give them the opportunity to "attach" their account to an "old" phpBB account. They will need to supply their credentials to the old phpBB account. On success, our system will associate all of their old postings to their new account.
  3. The user, when authenticated into the main website, will be able to go to the forum page and interact with the Discourse forum without needing to login.
  4. The user's ability to POST to specific categories will be limited based on their membership level with the main website.

Any suggestions on a strategy of how to go about achieving these objectives?

Thank you!

When posting, sometimes a message will appear saying "Sorry, an error has occurred". It usually takes about three tries to actually post. If it's a reply, the post being replied to will have the wrong number of replies, usually three.

[SOLVED] VM error on Windows 10 during Vagrant setup

I'm running Win10; downloaded the latest VM from the link in the blog but everytime I try the vagrant up command it errors out with the following:

There was an error while executing `VBoxManage`, a CLI used by Vagrant
for controlling VirtualBox. The command and stderr is shown below.

Command: ["hostonlyif", "create"]

Stderr: 0%...
Progress state: E_INVALIDARG
VBoxManage.exe: error: Failed to create the host-only adapter

I'll be the first to admit I'm a noob with Rails and Vagrant but can usually manage setting up a VM box. Here I have no clue how to go about troubleshooting this. Anyone else run into this?

Display Succinct Tag List on Home Page

I would like to prominently display a succinct list of most popular tags on my home page. I would like to be able to specify how many of the top tags to display. Of course, the tags need to be links. Something like this, but nicer:

docker x 136
email x 114
plugins x 86
sso x 78
javascript x 67
api x 49
badge x 47
keyboard x 38
markdown-it-review x 38
admin x 36
markdown x 35
import x 33
tagging x 33
wordpress x 32
css x 29

Can this be done now? If so, please provide details. I'm a Discourse newbie.

Thanks.

AppleScript Fenced Code blocks no longer working in 1.5.x

After upgrading from 1.4.6 top 1.5.1, my AppleScript Fenced Code Blocks no longer display correctly:

AppleScript language is turned on for highlighting, and this used to display correctly, but now displays like a mangled mess:

Hopefully there is some switch or setting that has been messed up or not set automatically that I can correct this, otherwise large chunks of my site now display significantly differently from previously.
