Upgrading discourse

@prateekvarma wrote:

Hi,
I just got a message on my new discourse forum to upgrade to the latest version. On proceeding to the installation (on the black console), i saw some error messages that i dont really remember about an older version. The forum is still up, but when i again try to click "click here to upgrade", it takes me to the www.website.com/admin/upgrade , which says everything is up to date, but www.website.com/admin still says there are upgrades available.

Whats going on?
Thanks

Enable tracking from category on mobile view?

@charleswalter wrote:

Just noticed today that users cannot track a category easily from mobile view. I can understand why, but perhaps this should be given some additional thought.

We have currently switched to category view for our homepage, which provides a more logical structure for browsing our site. However it does make it a bit complicated knowing where the new topics are. Interrupting the sitemap experience with a few random topics out of context does not really help in mobile view.

My first thought was that each category should have some indicator that there are new topics since last visit. But I can imagine that would be a heavy query.

Then I thought that we should really be encourage users to track more so that they can get notifications of new topics. However I realize now this is not as easy as it sounds for the user.

Anyhow, just wanted to share a view on this. Still on the experiment on category view vs latest view and no major difference yet in terms of usage that I can see other than a drop in private messages strangely (perhaps due to a lower pervasiveness of avatars)

I've seen several discussions on one vs the other as the homepage. Is there a reason not to make this a user preference?

Hi !

I've set up a dicourse forum at https://forum.photonic3d.com it works fine but when I login with github/facebook or any other way I'll get the message "Authentication is complete. Close this window to continue."

when you close this window nothing is happening. and I can go through the forum without being logged in but as soon as I refresh the page I'm logged in. I couldn't seem to find this issue anywhere else, does somebody know how to fix this?

Thanks in advance!

Force re-authentication after N days?

@aviflax wrote:

I’m using the OAuth2 plugin on my hosted site, so my co-workers can log in with Box. The main goal is to avoid having yet another credential to manage. Part of that is a requirement that if someone leaves and we deactivate their Box account, we don’t want them to be able to access our Discourse site anymore. I looked around the admin area but didn’t see a setting to force re-authentication after N days… is there something like that and maybe I’m just missing it? If not, then please consider this a feature request. Without it, I’ll have to add Discourse to our checklist of things to do when employees leave, which is getting quite long…

Hi,

If there can be setting that as soon as a topic is marked solved it should close immediately or after maybe an hour or a specified period which can be set for each category..

I think it would be great if this was added to the system :slight_smile:

Right now all new posts on our Discourse site are being automatically approved and posted. I want to change the settings so that new posts require approval from an admin.

All of our users are logged in (we don't have our site open to the public.) I've messed with user trust levels but it's still not working.

I'd like to add a little script to trigger a function when the header logo changes (when the window is scrolled down).

Well i'm pretty lost at it, being a total newbie to ember and its ecosystem...

Do you which file handle this or (what would be so cool) how to do such a thing ?

Many Thanks !!

Although not many devices support it, Android 5+ with Chrome 50+, iOS 6.1+

Where "multiple" is not available it degrades nicely.

Change the state of another widget

Continuing the discussion from A tour of how the Widget (Virtual DOM) code in Discourse works:

When creating a widget using Virtual DOM you can create a defaultState method that returns an object that will represent its default state (for example: if a post is collapsed or expanded). You can than implement a click() function to change the state of the widget.

I am wondering if it is possible to change the state of another widget, apart from the one you are clicking. So for example, you would click a button and the state of another widget would become expanded.

SSO - redirecting to forum and maintaining login status when logging in after registration

@Nick_Putman wrote:

I have SSO working using the wp-discourse plugin. It works well for already registered WordPress users, but not for those registering for the first time. When they login, after confirming their registration and logging in, they are redirected to wp-admin.php. I have installed the 'Redirect After Login' plugin, which at least then redirects them to my Wordpress home page, but it won't redirect to discourse, and even if it could, these new users would not automatically be logged in, and would need to click 'Login' again on discourse to engage the SSO and finally be logged in to discourse.

Obviously I'd like to make the login process for new users as seamless as possible, so would be glad of any advice as to whether it's possible to do so.

How to make Dreamhost SMTP work (Just the mail for discourse)

0

@Scriblet wrote:

Hi guys, I'm a noob, but I just got Discourse (running on Digital Ocean) to use Dreamhost SMTP for sending mail and what I figured out SHOULD help you guys with things beyond Dreamhost.

You got to figure out your homie server, instead of putting mail.yourdomain.com you have to put
one of the homie servers such as:
sub3.mail.dreamhost.com
sub4.mail.dreamhost.com
sub5.mail.dreamhost.com
homie.mail.dreamhost.com
To figure out which one of these servers are your homies, check out:
http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Certificate_Domain_Mismatch_Error

See, when I check webmail at my domain I get this:

What that means, is that there's a conflict between the SSL certificate because the dreamhost doesn't assign individual certificates for your specific website, but instead uses their certificate from dreamhost.com

In the admin panel for discourse it shows up like this:
Argument: {"type"=>"signup", "user_id"=>1, "email_token"=>"9067a99d7782276fb747e3c5041ca6e0", "current_site_id"=>"default"}
Error: Jobs::HandledExceptionWrapper: Wrapped OpenSSL::SSL::SSLError: hostname "mailyourdomainhere.com" does not match the server certificate

To fix this, configure your discourse app.yml like this

Since the bottom level domain is now dreahost, the SSL certificate checks out and your e-mails will start going through!

Things I also tried that probably didn't matter:
I changed the notification e-mail in discourse to noreply@mydomain.org
I created a noreply@mydomain.org on dreamhost

I hope someone found this helpful and it will likely fix other SMTP issues with other sites! Feel free to correct anything I said, I just started using linux yesterday to get this all to work and have literally had to google how to move around in putty/linux.

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to make a post to thank DiscourseHosting.com. Started my week trial and it's been amazing so far. One of the biggest issues I've had with self hosting this platform is emailing. No issues whatsoever with the new provider.

They didn't pay me to make this post either. Check them out if you want professional and AFFORDABLE discourse hosting!

Also, cheers to the Discourse dev team for making this what it is.
