Remove emails from send queue?

@MrSteve wrote:

I had Discourse running for several months without emails working. This was fine for the time, but now I'm trying to get emails working and there's a huge backlog of unsent messages. I'm using SES and I'm about to take my SES account out of "sandbox" mode with Amazon.

I want to prevent a big spike of old emails from being sent, though. I can see from various logs that Discourse is trying to send a TON of emails (which luckily are still being rejected by Amazon). Can I get a magic query or something to make Discourse to chill out and stop worrying about the old emails?

Searching results not displaying expected topics

Continuing the discussion from Missing English text `[en.admin.embedding.embed_classname_whitelist]`:

I was expecting a search for embed_classname_whitelist to return results that mentioned [en.admin.embedding.embed_classname_whitelist].

Whilst this might just be because of word-break characters . and ] they are still word-break characters and the results are still unexpected.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Search meta for embed_classname_whitelist

Expected result

Search results should include the following topics:

Actual result

Currently the results are a single result, linking to this topic:

Additional Notes

Searching for en.admin.embedding.embed_classname_whitelist results in the expected results:

And searching for admin.embedding.embed_classname_whitelist returns (an unexpected) zero results:

Although all of these results might include this topic after submitting this topic.

Deeply integrating Discourse into website

@Christian_Windeck wrote:

Hi,

I'm new to discourse.
How well is it possible to integrate discourse into a complex website or integrate a website into discourse.

I need high integration, graphically and technically. These should be no optical difference between the website and the discourse. I need customization on the graphical layout of discourse and also low-level DB access. I'm integrating various other custom dynamic code with the forum software including a webshop.

I do not want to be limited to discourse plugins.
Are there any resources on discourses internal DB structure?
How easy is customization and integration with static and server-generated pages.

Posts by new users with whitelisted URLs get flagged

I just had to approve https://community.metabrainz.org/t/voting-auto-editor-request-thread/21591/20?u=freso and other posts by new users such as https://community.metabrainz.org/t/isrc-as-unique-identifier/37367?u=freso also keep needing an admin/mod's attention, even if they are well within what's allowed by the site settings:

"newuser max links" is 4; neither of those two posts contains more than 4 links in total.
"white listed spam host domains" contains "musicbrainz.org"; the former of the two linked posts has 1/1 links to musicbrainz.org, the latter has 2/3 links to mb.o.

If there a bug in the system somewhere? Am I missing a setting? Can anyone help put light on what's going on?

"X new topics" has a gap at the top which can lead to accidental sorting of categories

@Drew_Warwick wrote:

The "x new topics" (button?) doesn't cover the whole topic sorting header:

If I click on that spot, meaning to click on the "Click to show" button, I accidentally sort the topics by category instead. Here's a screenshot of what happens after I click where my cursor is in the first screenshot:

This can be slightly annoying when I accidentally misclick and end up sorting by category instead of what I wanted to press. It'd be nice if something was in place to prevent that from happening. Here are some suggestions:

  • Extend the height of the "X new topics" button
  • Lower the height of the sort buttons to where their Y pixel 0 is in the same place as the "X new topics" Y pixel 0
  • Disable sort header while "X new topics" button is displayed
  • Disable top portion (above the "X new topics" button) of sort header when "X new topics" is displayed

Creating a Mega Forum

@TeacherMac wrote:

Please consider this a feasibility study for a project I would like to implement asap.

I need to verify that Discourse is the resources I need for the creation of a “Super Forum”: the basics outlined below. I would appreciate any suggestions, thoughts, and/or criticism you have that will enable the creation of a forum capable of being accessed by millions of people daily.

  1. Visitor's first view of the site is a page containing links to five, possibly more, categories. Actions: Links to Register, Logon, (Registered users access to their subscriptions page), jump to destination (with auto complete) or search for destination (with auto complete)

  2. Visitor selects from one of the categories to bring up a page containing more then four sub-categories. Actions: Register, Logon, (Registered users access to their subscriptions page), jump to destination (with auto complete) or search for destination (with auto complete)

  3. Visitor selects one of the sub-categories which would bring up a page of forums which may expand to over a thousand. Actions: Register, Logon, (Registered users access to their subscriptions page), jump to destination (with auto complete) or search for destination (with auto complete)

  4. Visitor selects a forum that brings up a page of sub-forums numbering in the thousands. Actions: Register, Logon, (Registered users access to their subscriptions page), jump to destination (with auto complete) or search for destination (with auto complete)

  5. Visitor selects sub-forum and, when viewing or posting has the option to add this destination to their subscriptions. Actions: Register, Logon, (Registered users access to their subscriptions page), jump to destination (with auto complete) or search for destination (with auto complete)

This tree will surely need to be refined and most likely expanded beyond what I've shown but, if I'm successful, this will be the most massive forum on the planet and once in operation will require all the support I can get.

Mobile users are expected to be the most involved so I'm attempting to make it easy for first time visitors to find their interest and for members to reach their destination quickly through their subscriptions.

Forming a site of this scale, I am aware, is not the recommended course but for this project to succeed, it’s the exception to the rule.

Other forum packages don’t have the capability to work with a project of this scope.

Another option could be a contained multi-forum with a common shared database containing all the members information, profiles and subscription linked to the database for each of the forum categories, it’s sub-categories, forums, sub-forums all contents and post threads.

A simple example:

A food forum: (All types of: Nuts, Grains, Cereals, Vegetables, Fruits, Juices, Dairy (including all cheese, types of milk, cream, half & half yogurt, etc), all types of Meat and Meat Products, all types of Seafood fresh and salt water) and fish products, Breads, Deserts, Drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) Preparation, Recipes, etc etc etc.

First Category: Nuts (over 50 varieties)

First Topic: Raw Nuts (all nuts that are available raw, preparation, recipes, etc)

Second Topic: Sliced Nuts (all nuts that are available sliced, recipes, etc)

Third Topic: Roasted Nuts (all nuts that are available roasted, recipes, etc)

Can you imagine the number of topics needed to cover everything?

My forum won’t be about food… It will be about everything that affects people in one country: Considerably more complex then my simple food example.

As I’ve illustrated, the flat format, shows that this one element, makes this format quite unwieldy.

For further details or information please let me know.

Need some quick queries written, paid work

@figlet wrote:

My S3 bill has got too expensive and I moved back to using local uploads. I still have a huge amount of my site referencing S3 which I need to delete. The amount of uploads I have on S3 is too big for the disk I have on my local machine so I just want to get rid of them. It's all memes and whatnot, none of the content is relevant anymore about a week after it is posted. Here's what I want to do:

1) Change everyone with an avatar hosted on S3 to something local and funny, so my site doesn't show broken images as avatars.
2) Remove any embeds of S3-hosted images from the bodies of old posts so my site isn't showing broken images in old comments.
3) If any post bodies are subsequently empty as a result of image removals, delete those posts so I don't have a bunch of blank posts.
4) Be sure to delete from the image hash/deduplication table all uploads that went to S3, so that when people re-upload an image it doesn't just dump a link to the S3 bucket in the post, which will serve a broken image.

When these steps are done I can delete my S3 bucket.

Let me know your bid for this.

Is it possible to "hotlink" SSO avatars?

0

@Nuck wrote:

So, SSO allows overriding avatars, but if I'm not mistaken it just downloads the avatar image and stores them in the Discourse system.

Is it possible to actually allow overriding the URL, maybe providing a set of multiple prescaled images? I'm storing them on S3 with a Varnish cache in front, so it reduces my caching effectiveness and more or less doubles the costs to have two sets of avatars.

Transfer likes when moving a new topic into an existing one

0

@erlend_sh wrote:

I just noticed that when moving a topic (not a reply) into another topic that already existed, the moved topic will lose its likes. Here's an actual example of a topic that was merged into an existing one.

This happens because when we merge a topic into another one, we don't actually move that topic, instead we close it and make a duplicate of it in the other topic.

This inadvertently strips the topic of its likes. Could we:

  • migrate the likes from the "moved" topic to the new post, and
  • remove the likes from the "moved" topic?

I realise this is more complicated than moving replies, but since moved replies do retain their likes, there's an unexpected inconsistency here.

@Primarypete wrote:

Just wanted to say that whilst I'm still waiting the mail settings to sort themselves out, I'm up and running with the rest of my Discourse instance. And it is awesome, as expected.

But more importantly for any novices considering using Discourse, it is definitely worth paying the $99 as the support I've had has been great. @codinghorror

PhP or Ruby for the rest of the website with SSO!

Hello all and thank you for developing great forum software. I have been using it for some time and simply love it. I decided to redesign the rest of my website and to make users sign with SSO and stayed logged using Discourse SSO. Now I am in dilemma what language to use and would php perform as well as Ruby and be able to use SSO of Discourse forum? Is it important what language will use rest of the website? Forum is on subdomain while the rest of the website is on main domain. Thank you all!

Getting Post ID with Topic ID - API Help Needed

0

@P16 wrote:

Hi Everyone,

We are setting up a new Discourse forum and needed some help with the API.

One of the changes we are making is that we show the first post in a topic on the topic page (like Topic Preview). Since most posts will be visual, we show the image, the title, the replies and likes, etc of the topic to the user. Something like this:

We wanted the user to be able to like the first post in the topic by clicking on the heart icon from the main page. How can we get the first post id of a topic from the main page since we only have the topic id?

Also, once we get the post id, we need to send that and the post action type id as 2 to http://DiscourseURL/post_actions
Is that correct?

Thanks!

Why didn't I receive the Gives back badge?

@steko wrote:

First off, let's clarify that I'm using myself as an example just to make sure the issue I'm seeing is not a bug somewhere in the badge machinery :slight_smile:

The Gives back :heart: badge

is granted when you've received 100 likes and have given 100 or more likes in return.

Cool! So I gave 464 likes and received 128, I should totally have this badge, but no, I don't. I see users with similar numbers in likes received/given than me who have it, so what happened? Is a certain ratio needed as with other badges?

I feel stupid asking this, because I feel like I'm missing something obvious. I just added my first staff member, and am trying to figure out how to use whispers with him.

But how? I enabled the option in the admin settings, but can someone show me a screenshot of where I actually create a whisper? Thanks!
