Polls can't be altered (even by Moderators) after 5 minutes?

Is this a setting somewhere? As I think moderators/staff should be able to alter a poll regardless of the time limit.

What if a regular user creates a poll that is "unfitting" or one of the options isn't permitted by forum rules?

"Body is too similar to what you recently posted" should be turned off for private messages?

I'm trying to tell 5 people that I no longer have any Atom.io invites left. They've sent me private messages. Surely copying/pasting "Sorry, I'm all out" should be allowed?

I realize there are probably counterpoints against this, but I wanted to provide a data point in favor of dropping the limitation.

Same goes for the limit to how short messages can be: I wasn't allowed to just reply "Sent!", which cost me about 5 seconds of my valuable time stuck_out_tongue

To make the best translations, we need more than one translator per language.

To federate everyone in one place, Transifex seems to provide the right tools to translate and review translations.

You can join us now on Discourse-Translations-Project created by @camilohollanda and @jbruni (portuguese brazil translators) for instance you'll find 2 languages: portuguese brazil (pt_BR) and french France (fr_FR).
Translations are waiting for your reviews and contributions.

Existing translators please add your files there.

Integrating Discourse with WishList Member (Wordpress Membership Plugin)

Leonard Baumgardt wrote:

I'm looking to use Discourse as discussion platform within a membership site – but as a non-techie, I don't know how to "make it fit".

The membership site runs on Wordpress, together with the plugin "WishList Member" (WLM).

WLM receives notifications from my payment provider about new members who purchased, and about old members who cancelled their subscriptions. So WLM manages the user database, and assigns levels to the different users.

WLM also controls, which pages on the site a user can see. For instance, non-members might be able to see only the "Welcome" page, whereas only paid members with active subscriptions can access other pages.

In my case, I'd want several parts of my site to be "paid content", and one part of that would be the Discourse forum.

That means...

  1. Discourse needs to use the Wordpress user database.

  2. There should be no separate login to Discourse once a user has signed in on Wordpress.

  3. The Discourse forum needs to be integrated into a Wordpress page, so that WLM can control who can see it, and who cannot.

I'm looking to hire someone to help me with this. But I think I'm not competent enough about how Discourse and Wordpress work to be able to hire the right person... or even to describe the project well enough for a programmer to know what needs to be done.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys,
Leo

Traditional Chinese search issues

Leung Aaron wrote:

Now the Chinese search function fails to work completely. I had tested from a previous built from Bitnami, and the search works well, but now in the 0.9.8.5 and even the 0.9.8.7 version, it is completely broken , and I could just only search by english keywords.

There is also one issue that I am very concerned about : Will there be compatibility problems if I backup from an older version, than restore to a newer version? I tried to restore from a 0.9.8.5 backup file after upgraded to 0.9.8.7 , but it seems to fail to restore successfully.

Please have a look in these matters, thanks!

French Terms Transalation

Sebastien Miquerolle wrote:

Hi everybody and the french community,

I discussed with @hey_julien about some translations in french, and I would create a debate about some of them to make the more judicious choice.

Sujet or Discussion or Conversation

Today, the terms "topic" was translated by "discussion". But the real translation is "sujet". I think that "discussion" is not the right terms for the philosophy of discourse which is more close to "conversation" than "discussion". (we can see the terms "conversation" on the main page of discourse).

So I'm not agreed with the translation of "topic" to "discussion" in french. German use the terms "Thema" (it's correct). What do you think about that ? Instead of having "Créer une discussion", we could have "Créer un sujet" / "sujets crées depuis votre dernière visite" / "Répondre dans un nouveau sujet". The last exemple is a good exemple. This button is here to do an off-topic ("Hors sujet").

With the last translation, with have both terms "Conversation" and "Discussion". I suggest to harmonize with the term "Sujet" and maybe sometime "Sujet de conversation" for tooltip or description (like the header of panel when we write a new topic).

Suggestion: Topic = Sujet
The conversation is open smiley

Etoilé / Favoris

As you can read on the comments of this commit, we accept "Favoris" as the best translation for "Star/Starred" by consensus with @hey_julien and @zogstrip. If you have any request or suggestion, feel free to share it on this topic.

I think the feature to follow or mute categories inside the users profile is kind of hidden.
Wouldn't it be better (maybe in addition) to have that feature also on the category-page itself?

Setting up discourse for a small business: digital ocean? discoursehosting? or discourse.org?

David McClure wrote:

We are excited to try out discourse to communicate with our relatively small community of users, (usually employees of other businesses, professional freelancers) and partners. Think hundreds of users, not tens of thousands. Much of what we intend to do with the forum is to replace and supplement our existing channels for support, which is often not easy to fit into a 'ticketing system' because a lot of the support is discussion about what the best way to do something might be and which could benefit a wider audience in the future.

We are getting ready to say goodbye to Zendesk, and steer people away from emailing support@ and folks personal emails for supporting our professional movie and television post-production products going forward.

While I'm tempted to spin up a digital ocean box because it might be fun, I'm not sure I want the responsibility and our own development team and engineers already have enough on their plates with the details of our business. It took us far too long to get rid of our own mail server, and no one is looking forward to going back to those days.

So I'm likely to get convinced (or perhaps I'll convince myself) that DIY isn't the right solution for the company, but I'm still open to considering it at the moment.

If going to a hosted solution, I'm on the fence with heading to discoursehosting.com vs waiting to see where pricing lands for the service the team here will be offering though.

Curious to hear peoples opinions below or via PM.

Translation Tools: Transifex? Localeapp?

Neil wrote:

Continuing the discussion from Internationalization / localization, which has become a massive, unfocused topic:

Let's talk about translation tools and the process for getting translations done. If we were going to adopt a third-party tool to get translations done, which should be used? From the Internationalization / localization topic, there seem to be two leaders: Transifex and Localeapp.

Here are the things we need from a translation process:

  • Notifications for translators when there's work to do, only for the languages they care about.
  • No cost to translators.
  • An easy way to upload our english yml files without clobbering anyone's work, ideally using an API.
  • An easy way to get all the translations and add them to the Discourse repo in github. We must be able to automate this so it's a one-click operation!

I played with Transifex briefly, and it seems to have a very nice interface for translators. It has the ability to watch languages, leave comments on translations, tagging, etc.

Does anyone know about automation of this whole process?

Using "home" or "end" key = back to previous discussion

Patrick wrote:

I am an avid keyboard shortcut user. I was just browsing my profile page, and then I hit the "home" key on my PC, rather than the page scroll back to the top (which is how it works on other sites), I got sent to the last discussion I read. I tried the "end" key and had the same result.

I repeated the process by viewing another member's profile, and then went back to my profile, and hitting "home" again brought me back to a previous discussion, rather than back to the member's profile which was my last view page (though that back-ing shouldn't have happened anyway!).

Additionally, this happened when on my homepage (https://meta.discourse.org/users/patrick/activity), as well as on my preferences page.

Biiiiizarre!

The only mention of the enable_flash_video_onebox setting outside config/site_settings.yml is in the locales, I don't think it has actually been doing anything since switching oneboxes to the external gem.

The setting was added after discussion here, I'm not sure if it is still relevant to the new onebox implementation.

Discourse General Polish

Sam Saffron wrote:

As we approach 1.0 I feel we need to spend a bit more time focusing on UI polish. I am creating this topic to collate issues I would like to see fixed.

Hopefully some people looking to help out with Discourse can try working on some of these.

Issues I want fixed

  • Footer padding gets out of sync: start typing a new topic in the composer ... size it big ... got to random topic ... footer padding is not added so you can not see the last post on topic. (workaround, resize composer once more so footer padding is added). This need to be added everywhere automatically. Including admin screens.

  • Expanding user card (click on my avatar arrow_left) has a shoddy jarring visual effect, it sizes the window twice. Instead just setting a fixed width and sliding down if it needs extra height.

  • When you make a new post it jitters, first render renders without your avatar, then its re-rendered with avatar. Jitter must go, needs to be seamless. Feel free to try on try.discourse.org

  • Uneeded "Loading ..." images when clicking between tabs. When you navigate from "latest" to "new" we unconditionally show a "Loading ..." gif, this should only show up if you are waiting longer than say 500ms.

  • We unconditionally reload topic page if you click on "title". instead it should scroll you to top if post 0 is already in memory. Same for in between posts navigation (eg quoting and so on)

  • Reloading a page with a big draft will often lead to this rendering bug:

  • Mac Chrome. Navigating back using the back button to the latest page is "glitchy" if you have scrolled down a topic. It rerenders the title undocked (as if you are on post 1) and then navigates back, this looks really glitchy

  • Synchronized editor, Ghost (open source) has a feature where it ensures the line you are typing in the composer is in view in the preview. This really helps composing longer posts like this or situations where space is tight. Whoever takes this needs to make sure perf does not suffer.

  • Mac OSX - Chrome ... while typing stuff in search box search box is half visible.

Experiments needed

  • Page transitions: nodebb and stripe use a technique that fades out the page you are leaving and in the page you are going to. see: http://community.nodebb.org/category/3/nodebb-development and click on a topic. This can either be over-the-top or help usability - it is worth an experiment, if done in a subtle way it can look pretty good (probably a default off thing for now)

Am I missing any other polish issues here?

If you are helping out with Discourse and would like to take any of these on, reply here.

Profile Background Image

The current grey background in the user profile page looks like a placeholder for something that could contain an image.

What about adding an option to link/upload a background image Twitter/GPlus style.

There could be an option to tile the background image like Twitter has.

PS. My email is public on my website, don't worry bout it. =)
