Paginating while searching for multiple tags

@cappslock wrote:

I'd like to be able to search for topics matching an AND of multiple tags. I've determined that I can do this by playing around with the UI by making a query like this:

https://try.discourse.org/search/query?term=tags%3Atest1+tags%3Atest2&include_blurbs=true&_=1473188130187

I have two questions:
Using the above method, I see that results are limited to 50 results. We may have more than that. I don't see a way to configure this in the app settings, or a way to get more results in the UI that I can farm a request from, or a parameter I can pass to this API method. Is this possible using this API method?
Is there another API method that might work better for finding topics with a set of tags that provides this functionality?

[PAID] Configure Hosted Discourse for Private Members-Only Community

@chris.crabtree wrote:

What would you like done?
I need an expert to help me best configure Discourse for my private members-only website.

The website itself is WordPress running MemberPress for membership management. The (brand new and empty) Discourse site is hosted on Discourse.com, on the Standard plan.

I wish to configure SSO via the Discourse WordPress plugin so that members of the site can seamlessly participate in the Discourse forums. Additionally, I want to configure Discourse so that its content remains private to the community. Only paying members of the WordPress site should have access to the forums, in other words.

For now, I really just want to use the WordPress plugin for SSO purposes onto the forums. I'm not inclined to do a lot of the deeper integrations the plugin makes possible for bringing content across the WordPress/Discourse border, etc. At least for now, I think it's cleaner and easier to understand for the users if the forums are just the forums and not woven into the entire website.

No search engine access, obviously. No AdSense, no DFP, no Amazon either.

I do want e-mail delivery of forum activity to the users, as well as the ability for users to post replies via email and to originate new topics via email too. I already use SendGrid for site transactional email delivery, if that matters or helps. From what I've read, I would probably set up plain old POP3/IMAP mailboxes for the incoming email.

I do want 100% SSL on the forums, just to be consistent with the WordPress site.

I may want to configure the Customize / Embedding feature, but need your help understanding what that means for the end user.

Because of the access being limited to legitimate paying users, I feel like a lot of the new user and spam protection level stuff will need to be tweaked quite a bit for the best user experience.

So the bottom line is I would like someone expert with Discourse and how it can integrate with WordPress. Someone who will work through all the configuration settings and make decisions that will result in the best experience for my non-technical audience of about 120 users that will shortly be 500 and probably 1000 by this time next year.

I want you to think about my scenario, have an opinion, and be able to execute on that opinion, basically. Then I want you to walk me through your decision points, briefly explaining why you chose what you did. I am a long-time software developer, but brand new to Discourse, so this will be my education. :slight_smile:

When do you need it done?
This month (September 2016). Sooner is better, but I am not in a panic or anything like that.

What is your budget, in $ USD that you can offer for this task?
$500

Here's the nginx config

Hi,

I'd like to create a comments section with each post in our news section www.elektronauts.com/news. Kind of like in the Facebook feed. The optimal way would be to embed a topic in a widget. Has anything like this been tried before or is there a better way of implementing this?

It's just amazing how this community/forum work, how structured etc....

When I compare to other forum hoster, I just realize that it's just impossible to compare discourse to other.

So continue like that !

I wish all the best !

Email templates - custom_invite_forum_mailer - not available

@sniepoort wrote:

Hey there,
So we have access to a large amount of email templates. Kudos to that! However, I'm not sure all of them are included.
We just ran into a case where we invited a new user, with a custom message. And it seems that it used the template from custom_invite_forum_mailer, instead of invite_forum_mailer (which is part of the Email Template list).
The same goes for the custom_invite_mailer. Therefore we had to go find it in the Text Content tab, and change it there.
Is there a particular reason why it's missing, or is it just an oversight?

SSL install confusion

@AlexTheRota wrote:

Hello, I'm new to discourse as well as ubuntu, but have Unix experience. I have been able to successfully install and configure Discourse on the system, but am stuck trying to get my SSL certs installed.

The link above has some confusing text and I'm left with a log telling me that the ssl.crt can not be found.

My confusion is where in the /var/discourse/ directory should these certs go?

My confusion started with the line at "Configure NGINX" where it says "Add a reference to the nginx ssl template from your app.yml configuration file:" I do not know what this means.

I believe this is where my process breaks down. Is there a conf file some where that needs to be linked to the app.yml ?

Trouble shooting I tried adding the certs in /shared/ssl/ directories all over the place. like:
/var/discourse/shared/ssl/
/var/discourse/containers/shared/ssl
/var/discourse/shared/standalone/ssl
I get an fopen error about /shared/ssl/ssl.crt

I created ssl.crt and ssl.key using cat and placed them in the dirs above with no success.

Any help is welcome. I've google around this and am still stuck.

Thanks,
-Alex

Automatically flag new accounts with the same IP

@jomaxro wrote:

Over at Stonehearth we got hit with a huge barrage of spam, mostly in Korean, early this morning. We just finished deleting 41 spam accounts, and blocking their IPs, as well as cleaning up the new posts (nicely flagged by our community). When going through the IP addresses we were surprised that some of the accounts had identical IPs, and even more surprised that Discourse didn't flag these accounts in any way.

Looking through site settings, there is an option to flag sockpuppets. However that only flags them if 2 new users with matching IPs post in the same topic. Can we get an option to flag accounts the moment a new account is created with the same IP, ideally blocking the new account until reviewed?

Can I install on existing Docker?

I'm running a server with Ubuntu 14.04 and managed with Plesk Onyx (preview of version 17). One of the awesome things about the upcoming Plesk release is their support for Docker images. So setting up a domain or subdomain on my server and running a docker container is about three clicks hard. I tried installing Discourse from the Docker hub but this failed and then after some careful reading realized that I can't install it without the Discourse installer. Is there any way to use Discourse in a container with an existing Docker install?

Does Gemfile need to include svg?

@pfaffman wrote:

On my dev environment Sidekiq was whining that

svgo worker: `svgo` not found; please provide proper binary or disable this worker (--no-svgo argument or `:svgo => false` through options)

I finally did a gem install svg and restarted sidekiq. The message seems to have gone away (it only ever showed up sometimes, so I'm not entirely convinced).

Does Gemfile need to include:

gem 'svg'

So that bundle install would have installed it?

I can't tell if this fixed my problem with image URLs not getting baked on my import or if that's coincidence.

`levenshtein distance spammer emails` should flag accounts that are similar even if no accounts have been marked as spammers yet

@jomaxro wrote:

Update: After detailed discussion, it seems that this setting is working as currently coded - it only checks emails against a list after an account is deleted. As this does not help when a spammer makes many accounts immediatly before spamming the site, this should be updated to check emails against all recent registrations and put users into approval queue if the similarity is too high.

Working to update spam settings after recent attack at Stonehearth. While cleaning up the damage, we found that someone had made multiple accounts, all with suspiciously similar email addresses. Looking closer, we realized that all the emails are identical, at least as far as Gmail is concerned - but it seems Discourse treated them as different emails. From reading about levenshtein distance on Google, it seems to be a measurement of string simularity. With a default value of 2, I would have assumed these accounts would have been caught, as they only moved the period.

Thoughts?

Discourse installation seems to have goofed

@Tyler_Humphress wrote:

It all started when I noticed that upgrading failed on docker_manager and discourse itself, but would magically be updated the next time I checked. The updating would pause at "purging temp files" and I would leave it for an hour or two, but when I come back it would say failed at "killed" or just at "purging temp files" and then it would be magically updated. I've assumed it has actually updated successfully even with the weird behavior.

Today while upgrading to 1.7 it has done the same thing. This time I decided to look through the settings and found, which I assume are new setting categories, this:

Which indicates the updates haven't actually applied correctly. I wanted to see if the new setting "desktop category page" would work as it's a new feature in 1.7, however, it does not.

I decided to boot up the command line to the server (Digital Ocean) and remove any plugins, just in case. However, after following https://github.com/discourse/discourse/blob/master/docs/INSTALL-cloud.md for the installation, I noticed /var/discourse did not exist and it now resides in /var/www/discourse. This could be Digital Ocean moving it around, or how the Discourse installation ends up, but I'm not sure. Anyways, inside /var/www/discourse I attempted to use ./launcher which does not exist. What's happened?

Fresh install failing - gnutls_handshake() failed: Error in the pull function

@Sisko wrote:

I have been attempting to do a fresh install of Discourse on a fresh installation of Ubuntu Server 16.04 but the installation fails during bootstrapping.

The launcher downloads the Discourse image successfully but fails when attempting to access 'https://github.com/SamSaffron/pups.git/' with the following error.

fatal: unable to access 'https://github.com/SamSaffron/pups.git/': gnutls_handshake() failed: Error in the pull function.

The full log can be found here

I have uncommented DOCKER_OPTS in /etc/default/docker so docker uses googles DNS but this didnt fix the issue.

I checked with my server host to see if anything was being blocked on their end that would cause this, i was told no. They did however mention that the docker0 interface using an MTU of 1500 instead of their recommended 1400 may be causing the issue. I have noticed that the Veth interface that appears only during the bootstrapping process also uses an MTU of 1500.

Can anyone confirm that the MTU may cause this issue? I have attempted to change the MTU that docker uses but havent had any luck, i added --mtu=1400 to the DOCKER_OPTS but this doesnt appear to change anything. Am i changing the MTU in the wrong location?

Its entirely possible that my server host was mistaken and there is indeed something on their network causing this issue but id like to first rule out the MTU before i contact them again.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Im happy to provide some more information if requested.
