Setting up Let's Encrypt problems
@Destabilised wrote:
Hi there,
I wonder if you can help me.
I'm trying to set up HTTPS on my discourse.I'm following the tutorial supplied by you guys but nothing seems to be happening.
I've attached what my setup looks like and I've obviously done something wrong or haven't done something so any help is appreciated.I'm new to this and am amazed I've got this far! I've attached the bits in question below, the bits I've edited -
templates: - "templates/postgres.template.yml" - "templates/redis.template.yml" - "templates/web.template.yml" - "templates/web.ratelimited.template.yml" ## Uncomment these two lines if you wish to add Lets Encrypt (https) ## which TCP/IP ports should this container expose? ## If you want Discourse to share a port with another webserver like Apache or $
(So I 'uncommented' the two lines below where it told me to, hence the gap, was this right or completely wrong!?
next up..
## which TCP/IP ports should this container expose? ## If you want Discourse to share a port with another webserver like Apache or $ ## see https://meta.discourse.org/t/17247 for details expose: - "80:80" # http - "443:443" # https params: db_default_text_search_config: "pg_catalog.english" ## Set db_shared_buffers to a max of 25% of the total memory. ## will be set automatically by bootstrap based on detected RAM, or you can o$ db_shared_buffers: "128MB"
This looks right?
Lastly...
## If you added the Lets Encrypt template, uncomment below to get a free SSL $ ## The CDN address for this Discourse instance (configured to pull) ## see https://meta.discourse.org/t/14857 for details #DISCOURSE_CDN_URL: //discourse-cdn.example.com
(As you can see I uncommented the email bit, but I'm guessing this is wrong once again!)
I've then rebuilt the container, the website hasn't broke but no https://
Any help is much appreciated!

[newbie] Discourse On High Resolution Environments
@bob77707 wrote:
It was recently brought to my attention how much variation there is with displays these days. The laptop I use displays Discourse nicely, fitting it into the browser beautifully at its 1110px width. The font size is perfect, photo attachment size looks fine, everything is great.
Unfortunately, I found the way that Discourse looks on a high resolution monitor a little less beautiful. It may just be my personal preference, but it seems weird not to make use of the full display area of the browser. Here's are examples of what it looks like in high resolution:
There's all that blank, unused space. It seems like with the dynamic thumb-nailing of images and all the neat things that this forum software is capable of, it would be relatively easy to have all the font size, images, and forum-width scale based on the environment.
I've messed around with the CSS and have been able to adjust some of what I want, but there seems to be a lot of dynamic stuff going on under the hood that makes it hard to control with customized CSS alone.
Maybe I just need to get better with my CSS skills! In any case, I'm just curious to hear if there are any plans to make Discourse fit a little nicer on a high res monitor, or if anyone has tackled this already and is willing to share their solution.
For the record, I'm very happy with Discourse. It's an amazing piece of software that I'm having a great time getting to know. This was just something I was curious about.

/groups/AD1 won't work (too short?)
@laktak wrote:
I created a group named "AD1" but the /groups/AD1 page would only show an error (could not load JSON).
After renaming the group to AppDev1 everything works.
Could not find my discourse version (not listed on the dashboard when you disable update checks ...?) but I updated this week.

Request to join Bosnian reviewers
@metakermit wrote:
I started doing some translations for Bosnian on Transifex, but I don't have the rights to review translations or fix mistakes in existing translations (e.g. the
%{sitetitle}
variable is sometimes hard-coded with some name of a forum "Revolucionar"). Can I be granted these rights, please? I am the administrator of the Balkan I/O forum. My username on Transifex is also metakermit.(I raised this as an issue in Transifex, but I don't know who gets notified of issues there for a specific language)

Auto generate user password
@foloex wrote:
I'm developing a little script that creates user account through discourse API. The create API doesn't allow user creation without passing a password.
It would be nice if the API creates the user even if no password is specified and when activating the user is asked for his password.
Is it the kind of feature that could be added or is there already a better way to do that ? (or did I missed an option in the admin panel ?)

I suspect it's got something to do with the large amount of deleted posts in the SSO topic. Probably very rare so I'm not expecting it to get high priority, just logging it.

Discourse SMTP "X-MSYS-API 'campaign_id' is limited to 64 bytes"
@Yassine_Yousfi wrote:
hmm...
when configuring SparkPost my emails were getting rejected by policy. with this error message:
"X-MSYS-API 'campaign_id' is limited to 64 bytes"
Is it possible that Discourse is generating a long campaign_id for my emails, as it never happened before but this time i used a long domain name of about 34 characters?
How can this be solved?

Can an administrator post iframe based podcast episodes for discussion?
@PeterButton wrote:
I'm about to start a new Discourse community to discuss weekly podcast episodes. My podcast host is Blubrry and they provide a way of embedding a podcast player in an iframe.
Here's the player code without the first and last angle brackets:
iframe src="//player.blubrry.com?podcast_id=17697281" scrolling="no" width="100%" height="138px" frameborder="0"></iframe
I tried to create a one box with this code (including the angle brackets) in a new topic and nothing appeared.
I understand from previous posts in this community that using iframes is a problem because of security risks.
As an administrator, I would be the only person creating topics like this for discussion of a weekly podcast episode.
I'll be grateful for any observations.
Thanks

Request to join Portuguese-Portugal reviewers

Hi, I'm starting work on the 20% untranslated strings at pt_PT, which has roughly 200 unreviewed strings just in client.yml . I checked out the reviewers, and they all seem to be inactive at pt_PT for roughly a year.
There's a conflict between using "mensagens" both for messages and posts. I would like to fix these. Can I join the reviewers team?

Mp4 being cleaned up even when referenced in a topic
@mcooper wrote:
We have "clean up uploads" enabled and any .mp4 upload that users have added to a topic end up deleted/tombstoned after the cleanup process runs, even if they are currently referenced in a topic. I'm assuming this is not expected behavior. Any suggestions for resolving this issue?
We're currently on version 1.7.0 beta 5. We just recently added .mp4 to the authorized extension list for uploads and noticed this happening. This only seems to effect .mp4 uploads.
Thanks!

Inconsistent Widths Across Browsers
@Joe_Fedric wrote:
I'm dealing with an interesting issue that appears to have just started this morning. Yesterday, all three browsers looked identical, when displaying my forum. Now, it appears that the table.topic-list element is rendering at two different widths. In Chrome (Mac and Windows) and Safari (Mac), I see a width value of 1284px, but on Firefox (Mac and Windows), I see a width value of 1110px. This is interesting, because the width value is 100%. What makes things even more interesting, is that changing this value, or the width properties of other elements and classes does not appear to make any difference. Here is a summary of the problem:
I am no CSS noob, but I feel like I am missing something super easy or obvious here. If anyone else wants to take a crack at forcing all three browsers to render the same width value on my forum, the link is below:
Yes, I am using a CSS theme, but nowhere in my files do I set the table.topic-list width, nor modify it in any way. I would also be very hesitant to disable my live CSS, as this is pretty jarring for users.
Thoughts? Prayers? Magic?
Seriously, though, if anyone can help, I'm all ears.

Permalink overhead
@pfaffman wrote:
I'm updating
bbpress.rb
to have it deal with attachments (now it inserts a link to the attachment on the original site) and create permalinks for the old URLs.The old format is `/forums/topic/slug'. For anyone who knows how to write an Nginx redirect, it's pretty simple to redirect that to /t/slug and be done with it. OTOH at this particular instant, it is faster for me to add code to the importer to create those permalinks.
Question: Is there any reason not to create a permalink for every topic?

Bulk Invite Issues
@VNVJeep wrote:
We're a cloud client, and was hoping to go live today. I got my .csv together with about 520 unique email addresses, and uploaded it. It said the upload was successful and that I would be getting notifications about it's status.
Well. That never happened. Nothing happened. About 20 minutes later, I tried it again. Still, nothing. There is no indication it was doing anything... nothing in the logs... no notifications... no new user. About 1 hour into it, I tried again... this time, it looked like 40 user invites went out. Mind you, this is still the same .csv file.
Where are the other 480? Am I doing something wrong? Should I be getting notifications? Should I be seeing 520 invites sitting in the queue?
I emailed support a couple of times this morning, and have not heard anything back yet. Not sure if it's because of a Eastcoast/Westcoast thing... but I really need an assist here please. I checked meta, and did not find anything where I could try to assist myself on this. I mean, it's a 1 column .csv file... nothing even remotely complex. Our members are expecting this to happen today. Please help.
Thank you!

I am looking for a forum for a community website running WordPress, wishlist member, and wp courseware. According to wishlist member, WishList Member uses the WordPress database to create members so no extra member account is needed for logging into forums that also use the WordPress user database.
Would Discourse with the wp plugin be suitable for this install?

Portuguese Portugal Terms Discussion
@amaral_miguel2 wrote:
I have started working on completing discourse portuguese-Portugal (pt_PT) language translation.
I created this topic to document the translation and provide a meeting point for discussion.You: informal vs formal
You can be translated as "Tu" (informal) or "Você" (formal). Depending on your audience, one might be more appropriate than the other. The current translation uses the formal form.
Post, reply, topic and messages
In discourse english terminology, you have topics, to which users can reply with posts.
"Tópico" is a direct translation of topic, which is widely used, so there's not much to discuss there.
However, in portuguese, there is no widely used term for "post".A direct translation is "publicar"(verb) and "publicação"(noun), which loses the specificity of the english term. "post" in english refers specifically to online publications.
"post" at oxford dictionary
"publicação" at priberam dictionaryTherefore, "publicação" in portuguese is often used for blog pieces / articles, and not for what discourse calls posts / topics.
Example of "publicação" used for blog pieces: http://www.fpae.pt/Other terms used in portuguese forums are "entrada" (entry), "resposta" (reply).
Some forums use "mensagem" (message), and then use "mensagens privadas"(private messages) for private messages.
Examples of usage in portuguese forums:There is some repulsion to the use of "poste" (a phonetic equivalent of the noun "post") or "postar" (the verb form) for portuguese-Portugal, due to ambiguities introduced by this new use and the fact it is a direct appropriation of an english term.
Here's two blog entries by a linguist, appointed by the Portuguese Government to discuss the portuguese language in cyber matters, about these two:"o verbo postar de post"
(about "postar" ("post" as verb)a melhor tradução de post
(about the correct translation of "post")I propose using:
- "publicar" (verb) for the act of uploading either a topic or a post (discourse terminology)
- "publicação" (noun) for referring to either a topic or a post
- "resposta" (reply) for referring to posts.
- "mensagem" (message) for referring to discourse messages.
Although not usually found in forums, "publicar"/"publicação" does not introduce ambiguity as "mensagens" does, does not alienate users as "postar"/"poste" would, and is more precise than "entrada".
This might or might not work with the way strings are set up.
Currently, the pt_PT (portuguese-Portugal) language at transifex uses "mensagens" for posts and private messages.The pt_PT translation is at roughly 80% in client.yml, and has had no contributions in ~ 1 year.
Therefore I will start implementing these changes, until anyone raises any objections.
