Continuing the discussion from Possibility to selectively (or completely) mark notifications as read:

As far as I can tell it is still the case that badge notifications do not show up as read despite the declared irritation with that state two years ago.

I just received twenty notifications for earning 'Nice Share' on another forum. Clearing all twenty notifications was a painful task. Maybe I should have left the notifications uncleared but once I had started I decided to finish. I also noticed that the only notifications that I have never cleared were all badge notifications - they're all cleared now.

How to update a Facebook group with Discourse posts and replys?

@diogocsc wrote:

I have seen discussions around here around importing from FB groups into discourse but haven't seen any around importing from discourse into FB.

Why, one may ask?
Well, there seems to be an argument that as FB is already installed, creating a new application might somehow divide users and some of them might not use discourse. Some of the users already said things like "I don't need another communication platform" and I can relate and understand that.

So...any ideas if this is feasible and if you know how to do it or someone that does it already?

Invitations, implicit account creation, self-deleting and usernames

$

@claas wrote:

So the invitation feature allows registered users to invite people to the community.

This works as follows:

  1. A registered user goes to its profile > "Invites" > "+ Send an Invite" and provides the email address of person to be invited:

  2. The user can Send Invite directly via Discourse and/or Copy Invite Link and send the link via another channel.

  3. If the user chooses to Send Invite, the mail will say (unless customized):

    {user} invited you to join
      {site_name}
    If you're interested, click the link below:
      {link}
    This invitation is from a trusted user, so an account will be created for you automatically.
  4. Once the invited user opens the link (whether via this invite mail or not), Discourse will automatically create an account (given that the inviting user is a trusted user).

The rationale for this is that this allows the invited user to get started and post right away. If the invited user had to provide any details, this would reduce usability and likely also the probability of an invited user to actually dive into the conversation and join the community.

However, there are three challenges:

  1. The implicit account creation might be surprising
    a) … for the inviting user, as this is what's meant by "no login required",
    b) … for the invited user, if she/he didn't read the invite mail beyond the link or only received the invite link via a different channel.
  2. The invited user may decide not to join the community, but –without intending so– leave its account intact, …
    a) … if the user did not realize that an account was created (and ignores the "Set password for your Community account" mail),
    b) … if the user does not expect there to be a "Delete my account" function or simply doesn't find it.
  3. The username(*) of the implicitly created account is derived from the email address and the user is never prompted to explicitly revise this choice, which means that …
    a) … the username may contain information that the user may not intend to share with the public or other users of the community (like full name or ilovebritneyspears87) and which may allow deducing the user's mail address (a good guess would be username@gmail.com),
    b) … the username may be unhandy for mentioning.

(*) = and the name, as it appears

So you may not agree with some of these points, but what if we could solve these challenges without hurting anybody and without breaking the premise that invited users could get started and post right away?

We could

  1. … be more explicit about the account creation …
    a) … in the Send an Invite dialog,
    b) … be more explicit in the invite mail (e.g. by mentioning it before the link),
    c) … be more explicit in a sticky "notification" similar to what the blue "you're in Bootstrap mode".
  2. … differentiate between the link in the invite mail and the link from the "Copy Invite Link" and prompt the user for confirmation only when opening the link from the "Copy Invite Link".
  3. … defer the account creation until the first action (e.g. writing a reply or liking a post).
  4. … prompt the user to revise its username at some point (e.g. before its first public action).
  5. … make the "Delete my account" option more visible (e.g. further at the top of the profile/settings) and possibly explain, until when or under what circumstances this will still be possible (or not) "in the future".
  6. … be more explicit about the option to delete the account (and possibly inform about this after a couple of days, if the user has not had any activity).
  7. … delete the account automatically, if there was no activity (and if we properly announce this to the user before).

So what do you think?

Of note is that I had this working at one time but then something changed and it stopped working. I'm not sure what changed, besides an update to Discourse and Docker.

Request to Join Group feature and requirement for Message/Mention rights by Everyone

@scombs wrote:

The group setting for Allow users to send membership requests to group owners (Requires everyone to be able to mention the group) seems a little dangerous.

We are asking users to request permission from the group owner to join a special group, but users on the site can send a PM to that entire group or start a topic and @mention the group.

Now that the PM for the request is going to the last 5 active group owners, can we remove the "message/mention requirement or scale it back to only require group members, moderators, and admin?

The body of the PM for the request does include an @mention:

I would like to apply for membership in @%{groupName}

which is nice since the owner can navigate back to the group easily from the PM, but that just requires the group to be visible to the sender, right? Also, @mentioning a group in a PM doesn't notify the group members.

Webhook "Triggered Categories" lost after reorganizing categories

I set up a new webhook tonight with the "Triggered Categories" field populated. Later on, I created two new categories, one of which I set as the parent of the other new one and two existing categories, then reordered them.

Something must have went wrong when I did this because when I edited the webhook to add a new category to the "Triggered Categories" field, the field was empty. I've re-added all the categories to this filter and will leave the categories as they are for now because I can't risk this webhook being triggered on private message or private category post events.

@DanielMarquard wrote:

Discourse to Discord Webhook

This PHP script acts an intermediary between Discourse and Discord, receiving webhooks from Discourse and parsing them into an optimal format before relaying them to Discord.

Demo

See it in action and test it out for yourself on Crit Cola's Discourse and Discord.

Installation

Just clone it!

git clone https://github.com/critcola/discourse-to-discord-webhook.git

This has been tested with and is supported on PHP 7.1, but should work fine on older versions of PHP.

Configuration

Copy config-template.php to config.php and populate all non-optional variables after configuring webhooks in both Discourse and Discord.

License

The Discourse to Discord Webhook script is released under the MIT License.

Display banner topic only to logged in users?

Is there a way to display a banner topic only to logged in users? Or to specific group members? We have a member survey we want to promote and encourage people to complete, but don't want to show it to anonymous visitors to our site. We also don't want to necessarily write a full on topic about the survey or create a new category just for logged in users to see.

I don't see what I want in discourse now so suspect what I am doing is requesting a new feature. :slight_smile: If that is so, please recategorize.

I noticed there's been some work around groups recently. But there's a glaring omission still to make group PMs useful for my community: email notifications are turned off by default.

Is there a way to make users watch group PMs by default instead of just tracking them?

Users are already notified by email when a group is @mentioned -- why not do the same for group PMs? Either by a site-wide setting or, ideally, on a per-group basis.

Random Network Error, Especially on Mobile

@Magnetidog wrote:

Hello guys!

One more support question for you. I have a forum setup a bit differently from the default Discourse setup: we have nginx in front of the docker container and connecting through discourse via web sockets. All works perfectly, no problem of any kind, and I can serve discourse from a subdirectory and other pages from other directories on the same site.

Anyhow, we have started receiving, since the latest Discourse update, reports of users getting a Network error message while browsing the forum. The error occurs most of the times only on mobile, but we have had sporadic reports of the same issue on desktop computers.

I tried to debug it in many ways for days, for example increasing Nginx wait timeout, for days, but the reports keep coming in. To make things a nightmare to debug, I do not get the error myself and I do not see any error in the logs (either withing discourse or in the outside's Nginx installation). What I suspect is some aggressive caching on mobile browsers is causing this, but I cannot reproduce it yet.

The server is also quite powerful, as it is running on 16GB and on 8 cores on Digital Ocean. CPU usage and memory usage well below the acceptable limit.

I wanted to ask if any of you faced this issue recently and how you responded to it.

Thanks all for reading.
