Correct way to build components

@piratdavid wrote:

Here's the structure of a component that I'm presenting in a News feed plugin on a page that's not tied to the forum part of Discourse. My question is: Am I doing it right?

A controller that creates the components model and stores it as a variable on itself.
A model that fetches its own data with ajax on creation and start a subscription on the messagebus that is passed on from the constructor.
A component that receives its model from the creation in markup. It cancels the subscription on willDestroyElement and reinitiates it on didInsertElement.
A template representing the markup.

I'm not sure if this is the right way to go. Is it right to pass the model this way? Should a component have a model? Should the model fetch it's own data? It is not as self contained as I would have thought a component should be. Should it even be implemented as a component?

Hope to get some clarity in this.

Thanks
David

Lately @dfpoon completed the zh_TW translations mostly single-handed! :tada:

However I found a few strings that were marked reviewed a long time ago to be incorrect. Specifically regarding "user's title in profile" being translated as "post title". Is there any way we can correct this? cc/@fantasticfears

Privacy: disabling OR hashing logs using cryptolog or similar

Hi everyone,

I've been recently playing around with an installation of discourse and realized that as an admin, I can see the IP address of all users at all the time. That's not exactly something I want to see or collect on the server that's running this platform (read this post if you're wondering why). I tried looking in the admin section and couldn't find a setting to disable logging the IP address, and thought about asking that as a feature request. While logging the IP address might not be exactly useful for most forums, maybe we can take advantage of something like EFF's cryptolog to hash the IP addresses and anonymize them instead of completely disabling them.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience or insight on this topic. And whether it could be considered to be put as an option in the admin section.

Thanks for the great work!

People being switched to anonymous mode without them doing it?

Has anyone had an issue with users switching to anonymous mode without them doing it themselves? I've had a couple users post in anonymous mode and they claimed they didn't make the switch. If it were just one person I'd chalk it up to user error, but two in short succession makes me suspicious. Is their going anonymous action logged anywhere that I can check to confirm that they took the action themselves?

Hello,

At this moment i have a completely closed forum. I like to make it more open.
Everyone can see all the topic titles, but only registered users can see the whole topic and replies.
And if it is possible only users thats post in a certain topic( introduce yourself) first can reply on all topics

Please let me know if this is possible.

Kind regards,

Require Tag to Post New Topic

Hi guys,

Is there any configuration or a way to make the tags mandatory for posting a topic?

In our vBulletin installation, we had 3 levels of categories. In Discourse, we moved the 3rd level to tags. Now from what I have observed, the tags are optional, however, I want to make this mandatory to select at at least one tag before starting a topic in that category.

The category in question is a sub category named as Car Parts in Buy/Sell/Exchange Main Category. The tags classify the items as engine, suspension, electrical, etc.

Any release notes (not just commit log) available?

@Jeremy_Howard wrote:

I'm always a little nervous of upgrading something when it's working well, so was looking to see if there are release notes for 1.8 that mention if there are any critical security fixes or major feature additions that might make the upgrade a priority. All I found were the git commit messages, which are a little long, are not prioritized, and frequently don't provide enough info for regular folks to know what they're about.

Could anyone summarize what the major changes in 1.8 were, and whether there are any important security fixes? Is this something that may be able to be included in future releases, since I assume that a lot of people would be interested... :slight_smile:

Suggested topics vs. Featured topics

$

@charleswalter wrote:

On our community, we seem to get people who stay in one particular category. We have a strange behavior where our top performing landing page is not our homepage, but a specific category homepage.

I've considered activating suggested topics in the past, but it just offers users more of the same, and often lists topics that are no longer relevant. What I ultimately would like to guide is the discovery of fresh, interesting discussion from lesser visited categories.

What would people think of an option to provide a query parameter for featured topics, instead of suggested topics, with the ability to select topics to appear on this "widget". A mix of dynamic query and editorial.

As more and more traffic originates from search engines to topic pages, users may not discover the homepage or the category page, so it's helpful to drive to keep engagement going with fresh content.

Would be interested to hear other's perspectives, and whether a plugin could be better suited to address engagement.

Wordpress>Buddypress>Discourse Facebook signin plugin question

@Christopher_Tate wrote:

I'm running WP with the Buddypress plugin, and Discourse using SSO. Currently it requires two email activation's to be fully regged on the site/forum. I'd like to make it a little easier, because I'm concerned it's too much of a hurdle for new users, as we are just getting started, and you know how hard it is to start a forum. Fortunately, we have a Facebook group with about 70,000 people that we are trying to steer into the new site.

If I could get some advice on which FB plugin is suggested, and how I might be able to daisy chain the verification process through WP and Discourse, I would be forever in your debt.
Thanks in advance.
