Admin Users list improvements

@Shrike wrote:

I have some suggestion for improvements of usability in Admin / Users area

  1. totals
    In Users section we can see users list with filters "Active", "New", "Staff" and so on.
    But there're no total count for every set. There're totals in Dashboard but they are grouped for trust levels.

  2. sorting
    It'd nice to sort rows in users list by clicking on columns.

  3. "Active" by default
    "Users" menu item has href link as "/admin/users/list" but when clicked it opens "/admin/users/list/active" page. Removing "/active" will result "page not found".
    For me it's not clear why "Users" by default shows "active" users. What is "active" user and how to see ALL users?

  4. New users
    Next to Active in Users section is "New" filter. It shows "new" users. But again it's not clear what is "new". Because on Dashboard we can click on total number of users with trust-level 0 and get into /admin/users/list/newuser page. It's also "new" but other "new" :slight_smile: It's users with level 0.
    BTW it shows me 3 on Dashboard but shows only one user in the list - so it's not fully synchronized.

So I'd suggest:

  • add an ability to list all users in "Users" (besides Active, New, etc)
  • add filter by trustlevel (with multi choice) in "Users" (not as separated pages opened from Dashboard as currently) - combobox with checkboxes would be nice.
  • add reporting totals in the list (for all filters), i.e. number of rows is needed
  • add an ability to sort rows by column (mostly I need to sort by "created" column)

Create hundreds or thousands groups/categories?

Hi,

I'm the founder of a training company. I'm thinking to create a private space (a category?) for each session.
What the simple way to do that and is it a good idea to use Discourse for that? I should create a group and a category per session, should I?

Thanks

Cannot use back button to exit Site Settings

The following sequence traps you in site settings

  • Click hamburger
  • Click Site Settings
  • Type "Test" in box
  • Click back -> back -> back -> ....

This raises two issues:

  • We are way way too eager on pushState here, we should be using replaceState most of the time. Typing test should not push 4 states into my stack

  • We should not be trapped :slight_smile:

Need a Discourse Expert to identify issues and assist with our issues

Hi all, non-coder here, but I am a project manager for tech projects in international development work.

I've got some major problems with my instance of Discourse. I am seeking help.

About a year ago, my company hired a design to build a website (locus.ngo), and the process was pretty ugly. By the end of it, the developers were way over budget, and there wasn't money left to attend to/structure/ customize/and in the end, utilize the Discourse forum as we had originally hoped.

Thus, the forum sat nascent for a year. Now, the branding site has now been rebuilt it in Wordpress. Everything works better with it. Now, I am looking to fix the issues with the Discourse forum.

There has been a myriad of troubles that I suspect have multiple problems. They include:
1. Our mailgun notifications going to spam (at best), or not being received,
2. Admin invite and credentialing functionality failing completely
3. A sidekik error message (Some problems have been found with your installation of Discourse: Sidekiq is not running. Many tasks, like sending emails, are executed asynchronously by sidekiq. Please ensure at least one sidekiq process is running.)
4. Bulk invite functionality failing completely
5. Inability to update Discourse to a new version (we are running 1.4.3-dirty)
6. The "upgrade from browser' email link functionality leads to "page not found"

I need someone to help diagnose the problems (mailgun related? server environment related?) give recommendations for solutions, and work with our appropriate staff to move ahead. Obviously, happy to discuss payment and hours. Thank you!

Been reading the forum for a couple of months as I've created my very own forum based on this script. I just finally got the time to register and my first post here definitely needs to be a big

Thanks

You've created an amazing platform that is far superior to whatever I used in the past like phpbb, vbulletin and all the others.

Its' really oriented towards community and considering that in 4 months since I started the forum I got over 20k posts and a lot of active and engaged members I can say it's doing just that.

So, keep up the good work, you have a very happy user here :smiley:

WP-discourse: how to deal with shortcodes in post

$

@tophee wrote:

I noticed that what WP-discourse is publishing to Discourse are the raw texts from the WordPress posts, not the rendered html. And I guess that makes some sense, given how complex wordpress pages can be. But it's also a problem since it means you can't use any shortcodes (or you can't use discourse with the posts where you do)...

Is there any workaround for this?

Are there any plans of maybe providing an option to use the rendered html as the basis for the discourse post?

I'm trying to install Discourse on Digital Ocean, but I'm having trouble setting up the email server. I'm using to suggested SparkPost, but am unable to get it verified. I've used NameSilo to purchase my domain, but I'm unsure about how to verify the emails or if it's possible with NameSilo.

I would appreciate any help, thanks!

Customizing About page and other pages

@Shrike wrote:

There're some special pages in Discourse: About, FAQ, ToS, Privacy. All of them can be changed except About.
I like the idea to have some fixed standard pages in every forum. But why About cannot be customized?

What I need for customizing About page:
* ability to write some long text with markup (images, emails, phones, other website for contacts)
* remove automatically created list of admins and moderators (can be done via css currently).

Also there're links to these pages in main hamburger menu. But only for About and FAQ.
I'd like to be able to add links to other pages in this menu.
Then of cause we need an ability to create such (static) pages. Currently it could be just unlisted closed topics, but we still need an ability to add links to the hamburger menu.

I known there're several plugins for static pages. I tried this one -

But it doesn't work at all and breaks Admin UI.

I think at least customizing About page is a must-have feature.

Are There By Any Chance Any Message Templates for PMs?

@mpsocial wrote:

Hi guys, I searched for this first but since I can't find anything related I wanted to ask/suggest.

Is there a feature/plugin that can provide message templates for PMs , like gmail canned responses I mean.

The idea is that me and other staff members get at lot of PMs, many have the same general few questions. Having pre-written replies that you can just select and send would be a very quick way of dealing with most of them.

Thanks for readying, waiting to see if there's anything like this already or even what you guys think of the ideas.

Adding some more info to the "your topic is simmilar to" popup

Searched for this, people talk about removing the popup completely or different bugs, but couldn't find an answer to this:

Is there any way to add some more information to the "your topic is simmilar to" popup?

My Idea is to add 2-3 lines of text urging people to use the search function before creating another topic as many seem to prefer to just post a new topic instead of searching to see if it already exists. Maybe some extra text there, in red or something would deter some of them from doing this :smiley:

Paying gig: migrating servers for the purpose ddos mitigation

when i launch shitposting.com it'll almost invariably be ddosed by naughty little shits. it's currently sitting on digitalocean while in staging; but i need to move it to aws or something else with insane ddos protection.

i've been told that discourse has its own built in rate limits and whatnot but no. the possibility of otherworldly sized botnets being pointed at us is honestly too damn high.

are there any ddos mitigation / discourse migration experts around here?

emphasis on ddos mitigation. there's a tutorial on how to migrate servers here: https://meta.discourse.org/t/move-your-discourse-instance-to-a-different-server/15721 but i need a guru to set up crazy rate limits on the server to prevent mass user registrations, misc. ddos attacks, etc.

Click count also fires at right click (=context menu)

@Stefan_Fairphone wrote:

Hi, something that is minor, but confusing anyway:

I can raise the click count next to a link by doing "right click", so that the context menu appears. If I do this a 100 times it looks as if the link would be very popular (possibly even triggering the respective badges).

I can reproduce this her on meta and on try.discourse.org and on forum.fairphone.com.

What do you think, is this intended behaviour?

I've started an update to 6ebddc4 from a6dd1a2 and it got stuck at

Writing /var/www/discourse/public/assets/discourse/templates/user/messages-randomstring.hbs

It's been 30+ minutes already, and updates on my server never take so long. What should I do?

load averages are ok at 0.05, 0.17, 0.49
Memory: 4046604 total, 581436 free, 2563080 used, 902088 buff/cache
Swap: 0 total, 0 free, 0 used. 612656 avail Mem
Disk has some 39 Gb free

I'm on Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS at DigitalOcean

Apparently, in the very beginning of the update log there is a warning:
Warning: the running version of Bundler (1.14.4) is older than the version that created the lockfile (1.14.6). We suggest you upgrade to the latest version of Bundler by running gem install bundler - but I didn't notice it at first since the update proceeded without interruption.

Thank you!

p.s. prior to that I've updated docker manager to 97c3b03 - the update has stuck once (it has been cleaning temp files and then got killed) - I've restarted it, and it succeeded. Docker_manager is now 'Up to date'. Could it have somehow affected the Discourse update process?

JSON API parsing error, single quotes used for errors like "['BAD CSRF']"

My JSON parser fails when retrieving certain errors, so far I've only expierenced it with "['BAD CSRF']" being returned when using the /groups/{group_id}/members.json endpoint (as single-quotes for string delimiters is improper JSON). Quick search in github revealed the following:

I imagine there might be some other areas with improper manually-formatted JSON as well.
