Configuring Patreon integration with Discourse

@Falco wrote:

Discourse Patreon Installation

First of all you need a working Discourse install with our official Patreon plugin.

:warning: During all the guide, swap https://forum.example.com with your forum domain.

Getting your Patreon Credentials

You can visit the Patreon Client & API Keys page and fill all the required fields. Use https://forum.example.com/auth/patreon/callback as the Redirect URIs.

Click on Create Client. If everything is successful you will receive 4 tokens:

  • Client ID

  • Client Secret

  • Creator's Access Token

  • Creator's Refresh Token

Save this token because you will need those later.

Configuring Discourse

Visit https://forum.example.com/admin/site_settings/category/plugins?filter=patreon and enable and fill all the settings.

Running the first sync

Now that everything is set up, go to https://forum.example.com/admin/plugins/patreon and you will get a screen like this:

Let’s click on the Update Patreon Data button so we get the first batch of data from Patreon. You will never need to do this again, because the plugin runs 4 times a day in the background for you.

Clicking on the button starts a process that takes a little while (usually 30 seconds) and if everything works out you will get a message like this:

After clicking OK you will refresh the page, but now all your Patreon data will be avaliable.

You can select the automatically created patrons group on the left and $0 - All Patrons on the right and after that click on the save button. Now click on the Sync Groups button again.

Results

Now, every Patreon has a group membership on the patrons group of you forum. This includes a group flair and a badge too!

Additional Stuff

Edit the badge and the group description with links to your Patreon page so it’s easier for new members to discover how to achieve then.

WebHooks

If you want to react faster to new Patrons, changes in tier and stuff like that, you can trigger a new sync between Discourse and Patreon on every change

To do that first visit Patreon WebHooks Page and create a new webhook for each Trigger all pointing to https://forum.example.com/patreon/webhook.

That’s it.

I'd like to set this to NEVER appear. If I can't have that, I'd like it to appear once in the entire lifetime of a user. As it is set now, it shows up twice in every single category.

Help!!

thanks.

Is there a good membership management system that is opensource?

Hi,

I'm now running a discourse system on a club server. All club members will have a discourse forum account. While it is not enough for the club running. We have to have more information of the club memebers.

Is there an opensource club membership management system? Better can be collaborate with Discourse. That is "One Account for Two Systems".

Is it hard to achieve?

Thanks for any help.

Yours.

This post contains the [poll] BBCode as preformatted text. The oneboxed link to this post ignores the preformatted text and shows an actual poll.

I guess this is a low priority edge case...

How do you send a membership request to a group owner?

@Martin_Cash wrote:

Sorry if this a really dumb question, I've been reading about groups for quite a bit, but I can't seem to find the workflow of how a member requests access to a private group. I assume the "Allow users to send membership requests to group owners" setting would allow a member to request access to a group from the group landing page...the group owner would then be notified to approve or deny...but I don't understand how members make the original request, nor how the group owner would allow/deny the request.

Display different html header based on browser/user language locale

Has anyone had success showing/hiding different html headers based on the browser/user language locale? I am working to make my WordPress site work in 4 languages and have copied over the navigation header to discourse. It would be fab to have 4 discourse customizations and display the correct one based on language of the browser/user. Thanks for any guidance!

Rendering of e-mail template adds unnecessary whitespace

The <div style='margin-left: 15px'> creates an unnecessary whitespace indentation and seems odd in itself.

What time of day will a digest be sent?

I've recently started a new community and love discourse. Wow the level of meaningful features is unreal. Thank you @team !

Ok, so anyway, on with it.... if I change a user to only receive the digest, daily (even if has been active = true), will that moment now be the new time in which the digest will be sent daily for that person?

Mobile (Android): notification for a post to a forum that is not on my phone

0

@grahamperrin wrote:

On or before the morning of Friday 2017-05-05 I removed a forum from my phone. There remain three others:

  1. meta.discourse.org
  2. experts.feverbee.com
  3. discourse.mozilla-community.org

Issue

Four or more days later: on the morning of Tuesday 2017-05-09 the phone received a notification that showed the name of someone who I do not associate with any of those three. I was pleased to know that the person, not a frequent poster, had posted; but surprised because the forum is not on the phone.

Discourse was not running so I tapped the notification to launch the application. No trace of the post – that's consistent with the absence of the forum – so privately, I sent an e-mail to the person to ask whether he had posted to the forum.

He confirmed that he had posted (he recognised the few words that I had glimpsed in the notification) so I sought a matching issue in Discourse Meta.

Observations

Recent https://github.com/discourse/discourse/commit/cd3904926238ebaa53d7be1724b9f2d9e86200fdSECURITY: do not send push notifications to suspended users – was a fix for inappropriate notifications (a bug). In that case: notification was to a user who described himself as banned (and I assume that he had not removed the forum from Discourse on his phone).

In this case:

  • I am neither suspended nor banned
  • I am an administrator of the forum
  • the unexpected notification was for a post from a person who is also an administrator.

Less ambiguous badge names

@tophee wrote:

I have earned my "First Like", "First Link","First whatever" badge on a number of discourse forums and I can't help but notice that every time I see that "Earned 'First Quote'" notification I have to think for a second whether that means "Someone quote you for the first time" or "I quoted someone for the first time" (and respectively with the other badges).

So I wanted to change the badge names to "Created first ..." on my site but found that they are hard coded. So here I am, wondering whether anyone else might find that a good clarification and whether the team would make that change?

Render %{invitee_name} as full name only

0

@tophee wrote:

When usernames are derived from emails (especially work emails), they often are very similar to the users real name. If the user has set their real name (and if real names are not hidden via site settings) this currently results in invite emails starting like this

John Doe (doe) invited you to join

As far as I can tell without any knowledge of ruby, this is where the John Doe (doe) part gets rendered:

I don't see the benefit of mentioning the username at all if the real name is available. After all, you are inviting someone who is not yet a member (most of the time at least) and hence can't relate to the username anyway. So I would like to change line 18 to

  invitee_name = "#{invite.invited_by.name}"

but I don't know how to achieve this on my site and I'm also hesitant to fiddle with the core code. Is this a change that would make sense for the core? If not, could someone give me some hints how to make that change locally while maintaining upgradability?

BTW: why is the variable called invitee_name when "invitee" commonly designates the invited person, not the inviting person?

Access to stats via API?

Is there any way to access the site statistics via the API? We're trying to put some of these metrics inside a larger graph, and it would be great to be able to do that via the proper API instead of screen-scraping the dashboard or something else similarly hackish.

Sudden Increase in Bugs on Discourse Backup System

0

@Yassine_Yousfi wrote:

Hi,

there just wanted to report something weird I came across lately, been using Discourse for almost 1 year now, without much of issues, in recent two days have came across too many bugs, (more than the whole entire year). And they were all related to the Backup System, Here is a list:

  1. When Restoring from a Backup to a new Install, Discourse Somewhat misses up the Facebook, Google API Login Keys

  2. Today After doing backup, once the backup process reached "notifying user" It hanged there forever, I checked my website and server and Found it went down :fearful: I had to do a hard reboot to bring it back online.
    Here is a little chart showing the CPU usage during the bug:

    When the server crashed it reached 100% usage!!!
    P.S. tried another backup, it didn't crash this time!
    EDIT:
    The backup file generated during the crash is slightly different in size
  3. After Doing a Backup, and Installing my Own SSL either OpenSSL or something else, I get ERROR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS just on a restored website on a fresh install it works just fine

  4. On a restored website the SSL folder under shared, is missing! not sure if that's normal or not, but in my original installation it was there, and All I had to do is to put new ssl key and crt under it.

That's all I can remember for now :slight_smile:

Mobile (Android): impersonation, log out, crash

0

@grahamperrin wrote:

Monday 2017-04-24 during my first test of the admin experience on mobile, I stumbled across the impersonation feature and took the opportunity to see how things appear to a newcomer. I chose a user who had paid just one visit, who had spent just one minute reading just one item. I wanted only to tell only whether the hamburger drew attention to FAQ/guidelines as 'new'.

05:18 impersonation (logged).

05:19 a screenshot with the menu highlighting our unread 'Welcome!' message (not the system 'Welcome to … … …!' message). Filipped the YotaPhone to check that the shot was saved (second display), then back to the first display and I logged out.

05:20 two screenshots whilst logged out.

05:21 one more screenshot whilst logged out then a crash, and a shot of the crash.

Please: is this worth pursing?

If so, I'll add screenshots and whatever else may be required. (But no public disclosure of personal information.)

Reset password button doesn't work in our forum

@Pad_Pors wrote:

nothing happens when I press reset password in the user profile setting, and it's written that "the email has been send successfully". while when I press this as admin for a user, it just tells me "error"!

no error is seen report in admin logs nor email-logs.

the button works perfect here at meta. and so this shouldn't be a bug.

I use fa_IR locale, may it be the reason? is there anyway I can understand what's going on?

Problem with setting up Let’s Encrypt in AWS EC2 instance

@Abhinav_Singh wrote:

Hi,

I've configured discourse on AWS using this guide. Now I'm setting up HTTPS using Let’s Encrypt. When I specify Let's Encrypt email id in ./discourse-setup, it displays below error

discuss.my_domain_name.com does not resolve to 172.31.x.xx
IT IS ALMOST CERTAINLY A BAD IDEA TO TURN ON LET'S ENCRYPT!!
Unless you know why this check failed, DO NOT USE Let's Encrypt.

For some reason it is taking the private IP (172.31.x.xx) of the Ec2 instance instead of the public IP of that Ec2 instance. How should I fix it?
