Browser-based PDF Viewer with search and highlighting capabilities

@terraboss wrote:

Hello my friends,

regarding to my earlier topic - let's say: unsolved key issue - I'm still looking for an option to open uploaded pdf files into the browser.

I'm using Discourse as knowledge-base. A lot of the content is embedded into pdf files. Unfortunately I can't switch to other hosting alternatives like Dropbox or Owncloud ... It's simply too complicated to mange multiple systems and link every single file.

Moreover, it would be a real benefit for every single user, if highlighting and putting notes to the pdfs would be possible. But the most important feature I'm looking for, is to search through these documents in addition the Discourse search engine. Maybe enabled through another checkbox beside the search filed :slight_smile:

This would be a real benefit for Discourse at all. :blush:

What are you guys thinking about this feature request?

Can I get rid of emails and just allow facebook, twitter etc logins?

Only recently set up a discourse forum and it wasn't even spammy, but sparkpost banned my account and refused to give a reason. I want to get rid of email altogether since it's causing loads of hassle.

Is it possible to just use facebook / twitter etc? Or does that still depend on emails to be sent to whatever email address is associated with their facebook or twitter account?

Terminology: topics vs threads

@tophee wrote:

I was curious to see a discussion about why topics are called topics and not threads (the more common term in online forums, according to my experience) but so far I have not been able to find any. Has this really not been discussed previously?

Personally, I have gotten used to the discourse terminology but I find it somewhat of a pain when trying to explain things to new users, as "topic" is not intuitively understood while thread is well known from email and other online forums. Yet, I am reluctant to customize the terminology assuming that the default terminology was a very conscious choice by the discourse team...

Badges for Certified and Licensed should say how to get them

I noticed that I hadn't gotten my "Certified" badge and knew to PM @discobot to get it. New users will get a message, so they arguably don't need to know that.

I don't know how to get the "licensed" badge, though. Discobot's help doesn't mention it, and it would seem like Discobot would tell me at the end of the tutorial that there was more to be had.

Or perhaps I'm blind.

Rebuilds fail for anyone with discourse-narrative-bot in app.yml

@David_Taylor wrote:

Since discourse-narrative-bot is now a core plugin, and contained within the core repository, there is now no need for the

git clone https://github.com/discourse/discourse-narrative-bot.git

line in app.yml.

Anyone who tries to rebuild with that line in their config will get an error message

exec failed with the params {"cd"=>"$home/plugins", "cmd"=>["git clone https://github.com/discourse/docker_manager.git", "git clone https://github.com/discourse/discourse-narrative-bot.git"]}

This will affect

  • Those who installed discourse-narrative-bot deliberately on their forums
  • Anyone who installed discourse fresh between 19th May and 24th May

This is a repeat of

I guess the only solution on the discourse end would be to rename the plugin in core (maybe just to narrative-bot, in line with the polls and lazyYT plugins), and then empty the discourse-narrative-bot repo (but don't delete it cos that'll cause errors as well).

Alternatively, everyone should remove discourse-narrative-bot from their app.yml.

What's next for the Discourse team?

Rumours, speculation, wish lists and posts from the DC team welcome :smile:

Personally I think a community orientated publishing platform is crying out for the DC Team touch! It's also a natural progression and complement to DC, whether as an evolution or a separate product.

Think of articles, news pieces, reviews, blogs even - as the main article (first post) and comments (subsequent posts). Add in custom fields for categories/threads, then you have a cms-like system that can be used for things like reviews, albums, info pages etc.

As an example this site uses vBulletin to power every section - all news/articles etc are just normal threads!

I can see lots of publishing houses/commercial blogs moving to DC for such a system... and I bet they'd be willing to pay for premium hosting :smiley:

Just an idea :stuck_out_tongue:

On a separate note, I continue to be impressed by DC and the Team - well done all of you for making one of the best forum platforms around. It's been my favourite platform for a while now, and (as someone who has used a lot of forum platforms over the last ten years) I would rate it as the current leader, the industry standard :+1: :clap:

Has it ever been considered to hide notifications from the top menu after they have been clicked? I'm participating in a very active topic on my community, and it's hard to keep track of all the responses I'm getting. I imagine it's even more difficult for the power users on our site. Curious to hear other people's thoughts.

If not the solution is then basically removing people who do not know how to use that from Level 3.

Auto-activate new users

@sulliops wrote:

I want to disable the requirement for new users to verify through email, mostly because my server does not have sendmail and my sendgrid account has a limited number of emails that can be sent each month.

I know I probably will not surpass this limit on my forum (for a long, long time), but I want to use that account for other things as well and I'm afraid it will all add up. Is it possible to automatically activate new users so that activating via email is no longer required, and then also disable the activation email?

Even if it is not important now, this could be useful later, so if this is not yet possible, could someone let me know and I'll recategorize this under features? If it is possible, please be as descriptive as possible.

Before logging in to any Discourse instance, make sure that the use of browser cookies is enabled for that site or all sites - that was my issue, and thus resolved the issues on Discourse Meta, KC, my school's portal, and a whole lot more sites.

So, in other words...

Hubot Adapter for Discourse

$

@awole20 wrote:

I built a Hubot adapter for Discourse.

This should work moderately well for small communities that desire bot integrations. There are a few gotchas (see the readme) but for the most part it has been pretty incredible to tinker with so far.

Something my community desired was a dice roller, which I knew existed as a hubot plugin. While there have been other attempts at integrating dice rollers into discourse, if I was going to run a bot against my Discourse instance, I wanted the full power of hubot plugins at my disposal. My aim here was to have there be an easy way to integrate such reply features into a Discourse community using an existing and well known bot.

This adapter is about adding a bot that directly listens in to topics and replies in Discourse itself. It differs from a previous Hubot integration topic as that seemed to be aimed at querying a discourse community in an existing integration (irc, slack, etc) to get discourse stats, and possibly post to a remote Discourse instance.

It's still rough around the edges, and definitely could use some polish, but it is in a pretty good working state. I'm up to other suggestions as to how to poll the adapter for new notifications more cleanly. Currently it's simply polling /notifications.json every 10 seconds, processing unread notifications, and marking everything as read.... One win I would see is it would be great if I were able to poll for unread notifications only, but it works, inefficiency aside. I created the repository as hubot-discourse-integration, as hubot-discourse was already taken... Sadly this also had no documentation, code, or announcements here. I wasn't inclined to trust it, so I built this.

(This kind of thing might belong in #plugin:extras -- if so please move!)

Or there is other way to do it.
