Unlisted topic is visible in notification popup if a category is watched?

@Trash wrote:

I posted a new topic in our private category and I made it immediately unlisted.
After a few hours I see the topic received one like by a team-member and then a reply from another team-member.

The unlisted topics should not be visible only to administrators and moderators?

I think the problem here is that those members have the category as "watched" on their profiles.
Infact they "see" this unlisted topic when they opened the notifications tab clicking on their avatars.

I asked to another team-member to check his notifications and he hasn't received it.
I checked his profile settings and I see he has no categories "watched".

Inline language markup? (language learning site)

@rfindley wrote:

Is there enough interest in the community to merit adding inline markup for language?
This is would be helpful in mixed language communities, and especially language learning forums.

For example, something like this:

[lang=ja]....[/lang]

To produce html:

<span lang="ja">....</span>

The same Unicode character is rendered differently in different languages:

In the image above, the browser renders it differently when it knows the text is Japanese.

I realize there are site-wide and user-specific locale settings, but in a mixed-language post (like on a language learning site), two languages could be used in the same post.

Is this worthy of mainline integration?

Marking closed topic solved with solve_topics_auto_close_hours set causes topic to be reopened

Just set solved topics auto close hours on one of my sites. Ran into an issue when a moderator marked a closed topic solved. The topic was re-opened. This was quite unexpected, and caused a year old topic to resurface to the top of the /latest. If a topic is already closed, marking a post as the solution should not cause the topic to re-open.

Show which text elements depend on user locale

@tophee wrote:

If I'm not mistaken, there are two types of customizable text content elements: those that will always be displayed in the site's language and those that will be displayed depending on the respective user's locale.

If that is correct, I'd like to suggest that this is made transparent for every text element shown under Customize - > Text Content (In other words: add some kind of marker indicating something like "depends on user locale" or "depends on site locale").

Reason: if you allow users to select their own locale and you adjust some text elements, it's important to know whether these changes will be visible to all users or just to those using the site's default locale.

Suggestion for admin filter behaviour (on emails, for example)

@JagWaugh wrote:

In admin/email we have a filter facility. Great!

If you filter /admin/email/sent for username "bill" you get every user with "bill" in their username. Could this filter incorporate the @username lookup facility like on the rest of the site, so that if you type @bill in the filter list you either get a picklist of usernames starting with bill, or if you've only one username which starts with "bill" then the filter selects only events from that user?

Allow welcome email in addition to the bot welcome message

$

@tophee wrote:

I understand why the original welcome PM has been deprecated in favour of discobot's welcome message. Nevertheless, I think it would be good to allow for an additional welcome message sent to new users via email (only). It's obviously possible to trigger such a message externally via a webhook, but why outsource what could easily be had inside discourse. So my suggestion would be to add a third option to the discourse narrative bot welcome post type dropdown: "Start the new user tutorial for all new users and also send a welcome email"

There are many reasons why site admins might want to send a welcome email in addition to the bot's PM but I'll just mention what I think is an important trade-off/double bind in the current situation with only the bot message: the more custom info I add to the bot's welcome message, the less likely people will see the tutorial at the end (which, I think, is the bot's main purpose). So it is advisable to keep the bot's message as short as possible and put all additional information into an email.

Adding further static pages

Continuing the discussion from Easy to use static pages plugin:

It seems that I am not alone in looking for ways to add further static pages to my Discourse site. However, the Admin pages do not allow you to do this AFAIK, and previous plugins for Static Pages have been broken by more recent upgrades.

Is there any known, or planned, solution to this?

In my case I am only looking to add another guideline page to the About/FAQ/TOS/Privacy section. I want to add a Usernames Guideline text exactly as per the FAQ page but without making that page even longer. Currently our site (in Beta test) has to block anonymous users so only these pages are visible to users before registration, hence the requirement.

Since I believe development is driven by "user demand" (i.e. if you scream loud enough ...) it would really help to bring this up the priority list if you add your voice to this conversation if you too are looking for this facility.

Webhook to forward posts to a mailinglist: best practice?

$

@tophee wrote:

In an ideal world, everyone you want to communicate with just signs up for your discourse forum. In the real world, you end up with your discourse forum as the main platform for your communication activity plus a number of additional channels such as a mailinglist of people who refuse to make the transition to the forum.

Has anyone addressed this kind of situation by setting up a webhook that forwards new topics/ posts from certain categories to a mailinglist? If so, I'd be interested to hear about experiences with that, including pitfalls to avoid in that kind of setup.

How does category sorting by activity actually work?
My intuition was, that category with latest reply should appear first on the list, but this does not seem to be the case on our community. So, how it should work? Are subcategories counted in? If yes, how?

Customize invite message also for "invite others to a topic"

$

@Pad_Pors wrote:

usually I'd rather use the mention feature (@) rather than the invite button at the button of a topic. because when I mention someone, I can explain him the reason of mentioning.

but:

  1. when the cm wants to invite several users to a topic, each for different reasons, the topic becomes ugly if he use mentioning in a reply.

  2. also in a fruitful discussion, where everyone is making arguments about the main subjects, jumping in and saying "I think @someone can help in this matter" is like a noise!

  3. also this feature already exists for the global invitations! and I'm sure some of the reasons why it felt needed there, also fits this situation.

at the end, may you extend the customize-able messages also to the invite button at the end of each topic?

@Pad_Pors wrote:

I can't find the string "Solved by" in the admin/customize/text panel:

while the fa-locale exists in the repository.

is it because the first line in the translation is fa rather than fa_IR?
or is there any other reason?

p.s.: the solved plugin has improved a lot, but I feel the translation file is not updated. should every string of the plugin exist in the yml file (so that they become translatable)?
