You guys keep closing my post.

The problem is this issue is the same thing happens for ANY flags that are created... Discourse doesn't always send an email notification.

Please let me know how to fix.

What Blocked Users can/can't do

@Jody wrote:

I think this just boils down to uncertainty of what different things are called within Discourse. I have a user which I've blocked, as it states that means they can't create topics or respond to them... but are private messages to other users considered a new topic or response? ie. Can that user now PM me to ask what they can do to get unbanned? (I want them to be able to PM, so how can i prevent them from dealing with the public but still be able to reach out to me or others.)

Index of all automated pop-ups and bot messages

Is there some way to export or view all of the automated pop-up's and bot messages? We're trying to get an idea of all the possible messages our community members might come into contact with, and if we need/want to tweak the messaging to better match our brand voice (if possible). It looks like some customization is possible using Customize > Text Content, but it's not super useful unless you know what you're looking for. A comprehensive index would be oh-so-helpful!

Since some months I have this weird problem:
At the first visit per day at my forum, it will only show a blank page with the background color of the current theme
this also happens if you clear my browser cache (i.e. via CTRL + F5)
after a site reload, the forum will show just fine

the browser console will show this:

(this is a screenshot after I commented every plugin out and rebuild discourse)

Some informations about my installation:
I'm always running the latest Beta version of Discourse via the recommended Docker Install Guide
Using this templates:

templates:
  - "templates/postgres.template.yml"
  - "templates/redis.template.yml"
  - "templates/web.template.yml"
  - "templates/web.ratelimited.template.yml"
  #- "templates/web.ssl.template.yml"
  #- "templates/web.letsencrypt.ssl.template.yml"
  - "templates/web.socketed.template.yml"
  - "templates/cloudflare.template.yml"

and with this plugins:

  • Docker Manager
  • Spoiler Alert
  • Staff Notes
  • Solved
  • Whos Online
  • Steam Login
  • Discourse Signatures
  • Discourse Cakeday
  • Backup to Dropbox
  • Discourse Data Explorer
  • Discourse Assign

I'm also using a Nginx Webserver on top of the Docker Image to proxy_pass Discourse:

  location / {
    proxy_pass http://unix:/var/discourse/shared/standalone/nginx.http.sock:;
    proxy_set_header Host $http_host;
    proxy_http_version 1.1;
    proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
    proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto https;
  }

How to (re-)enable 'like' functionality on first post in topic?

Hi there. First and foremost - thank you to Discourse team for creating amazing piece of software.

I have noticed that once voting plugin is installed it removes "like" (heart) icon on first post in topic. Is there any way to re-enable 'like' icon on first post in the thread? I have read the discussion about voting plugin spec and have seen voices that "voting" is meant to replace "like" but many people in my forum do not share this opinion and would like to be able to "like" first posts too.

Is there a faster way to develop plugin theme CSS / JS (e.g. livereload)?

@kara-todd wrote:

Hey there,

I'm trying develop a custom theme/plugin which will add a few additional templates and some general styling to discourse.

In pursuit of this, it would be great to get some kind of livereload/auto-injected CSS action going on, as reloading the page and wating 2s to notice I have made a typo is slowly adding up to quite a significant chunk of time. :slight_smile:

It seems like the recommendation is to use autopec, but I'm a little confused as to how this is supposed to work.

I have discourse setup and running locally using vagrant. I've ssh'd into the box and can run the server, see the admin page etc.

Should I run autospec and then start the server? or vice-versa? Will this effectively work to live reload the CSS so that I don't have to refresh the app? Or am I just completely off-base here?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. :slight_smile:

Unable to restore from backup

@Timothy_Vail wrote:

I am trying to restore a backup but it has not been able to unpack or something. I had to totally start a new server and install a fresh discourse because I couldn't rebuild my app, there was a HTTP request limit error and something else stopping it. I had someone work on it for 3 1/2 hours and we came to the conclusion that it was server Ubuntu related.

Anyhow, all I want is my users, their info, and any custom translations I had for strings and such. All that is in the backup file, but I don't know how to extract it other than go into notepad and do it all by hand. Can anyone help?

API: cannot update user

I'm trying to use the API to sync user data.

I was able to, for instance, add a user to a group with a PUT to groups/:id/members.json

However, now I'd like to update fields in the user profile -- the name, for instance. I think it's possible, based on this example.

So I'm posting request:

PUT /users/m.redaelli HTTP/1.1
HOST: disc.uaar.it
accept: application/json
content-length: 107
content-type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded

api_key=xxxx&api_username=m.redaelli&name=Pippo

using the master key.

As a result I get a 404 with an HTML page response saying that the requested page does not exist or is private.

Can you help? :slight_smile:

How to convince my university to use/install Discourse?

Hi all, I'm a student in a french university.
I would really like to convince my department (~100 students) to use Discourse as an organisation and communication tool.

Currently we have not such tool, teachers and contributors only use mails.

One of our teacher use a Google Drive folder, but it does not suit her requirements. It's also verry hard for us (students) to feel concerned and interact with our teacher via google drive.
She has ask me about web tools to improve project and courses management. I have an opportunity to introduce Discourse to her and the others students.

What could be the best argument for teachers and students ?
(One you can't know is that we learn Ruby on Rails at 1rst semester)

The default maximum number of characters for direct messages via the flag button seems to be 500 characters. I'd like to increase that a bit but can't find the setting for it... Where should I look? If if doesn't exist, please treat this as a "feature" request.

Helping imported users claim their posts

The experimental mbox importer (which works really well!) imports all users as staged users. This means that community members need to create new accounts and get no feedback about whether or not the email address they use for Discourse matches the email address in the import. Until the functionality to merge users is added, this is potentially problematic. We don't want users creating accounts with email addresses other than the one they used on the old forum.

Ideally, we could instruct users to use the reset password functionality and turn off new user creation for a few days while people migrate over.

To get the desired behavior, we could unstage all users but I think they would then get digests and mentions and would need to create an account to stop them. Am I understanding that correctly? Would making the users not staged AND inactive give us what we're looking for?

At a higher level, this could maybe be a use case for enabling password reset for staged users. Conceptually, it makes sense that the users would be imported as staged but it would also be great if they could get some help using the email address that lets them claim their old posts.

I am in the process of migrating my club from a Yahoo! mailing list to Discourse. During my investigation, Discourse seemed to be the ideal solution.

Many of our users insist on retaining mailing list functionality, but many also want the forum environment. Discourse seemed like the perfect fix. About 1/3 of our users opt for a daily or weekly digest on the current mailing list. They have made it clear that the digest function is a must-have. When I began looking at Discourse I'm pretty sure it offered email digest options for notifications.

Now that I am ready to make the move for my club I just realized that there is no longer an email digest option.

What happened to digests? I saw a discussion that the developers were concerned about the potential for large volumes of emails with digests.

We are a small organization and I have little concern for that.

This a very disappointing discovery and likely a deal-breaker for using Discourse. Please reinstate digests!
Thanks,
Alan
