How to adjust topics so they load in a modal?

@mastef wrote:

Ideally I’d like topics to show up in a modal sliding in from the right side, while the category view is still shown in the background.

Similar to the old Product Hunt layout, or the reddit iPad app layout ( https://youtu.be/shzUF7FGNpI?t=18s ) - or a similar view to Outlook/email clients.

Basically I’d like to prevent a page change on topic view, I want to show the topic in the right half of the screen, while still showing the category overview in a list view on the left side.

Is this possible - how would I attempt this?

Plugin development: site settings "enabled" checkbox not working

@jack2 wrote:

I declared a myplugin_enabled site setting in config/settings.yml, config/locales/server.en.yml and plugin.rb (as described here),.
However, I’ve recently discovered that unchecking the box doesn’t disable my plugin. The plugin is loaded - and works correctly, including accessing other site settings - whatever the checkbox state.
Any hint?

Hey there,
I was wondering if anyone would be open to earning a couple bucks to install Discourse with WordPress Integration for me.

I usually use xF however we are looking for something different this time around and think this would be ideal. Payment will be made via PayPal.

Redirects performance: permalinks vs nginx

@pfaffman wrote:

I’ve just submitted a PR for the mybb importer that includes permalinks for users, categories, and topics (in Discourse terminology. The person I did it for is concerned that having Discourse handle these will be less efficient than having NGINX do it.

My naive understanding is that until rails goes looking for permalinks there’s no performance hit (other than a bit of database overhead) and when it does go looking, it does a single indexed database search. I’d think that if an external NGINX were doing it, it would be looking at all of those redirects on every query, but that can’t be right (can it?).

I’ve seen some discussions, though, about having an external nginx handle these redirects, and at least one importer generates a CSV file to use to do external redirects. What are the tradeoffs?

There are about 25K users, 150 categories, and 12K topics plus one permalink normalization to remove cruft after the .html in the URL.

Graphing Thread Activity

Really don’t know where this thread/idea should go but I’m curious how one might go about tracking/graphing thread activity on a minute by minute basis.

We have Google Analytics on the site but it can only give my hourly reporting.

Our forum has threads that get a huge spike in activity for only hours at a time and I would really like to see posts count / visitor numbers / active users on a minute by minute basis. If it’s possible.

Did one-click install on Digital Ocean. Set up SMTP using SparkPost. Not receiving Discourse activation email

@DonaldH wrote:

Hello

I created a droplet on Digital Ocean with the Discourse installer. I created an account on SparkPost, created an API key and verified a sending domain forum.mydomain.org

I logged into the droplet using Putty and inputted the following details:

Host: smtp.sparkpostmail.com
Port: 587
Username: SMTP_Injection
Discourse API Key: ******************************************

I logged into the new Discourse install via the IP address, inputted my admin email admin@mydomain.org and username admin. It said that an activation email was sent but I haven’t received anything. I’ve tried multiple times and checked the spam folder.

The only thing I can think of is that I don’t currently have forum.mydomain.org pointed to the Discourse instance in my DNS settings (I’m using AWS Route 53) as I haven’t received a welcome email from Discourse with hosted-by-discourse.com as per the instructions here: https://meta.discourse.org/t/configure-your-domain-name-for-hosted-discourse/21827

Can somebody please help?

Splitting of topic doesn't get updated correctly in second tab

@Sujan wrote:

  1. Find a test topic that already has at least 2 posts
  2. Open this topic in two browser tabs.
  3. Create a reply in tab #1.
  4. Split the post you replied to and the reply you just created into its own, new topic.
  5. In tab #2, the “topic split” message thingie appears as a new post to the old topic, but only the new reply isn’t shown. The original post you replied to is still shown until you reload the page.

Large number of queued jobs

@leo.proctor wrote:

I’m creating huge number of topics in parallel via api, which has slowed down our forum incredibly. I’ve noticed several jobs are queued in sidekiq. Is this could be the reason? what sidekiq jobs are required for posts creation? fyi I’ve disabled sending emails.

I’m using discourse default settings for no. of sidekiq workers and database connections. Any advice for how much should I increase of any resource?

Editing posts in a topic bumps them up, at times

0

@Magnetidog wrote:

Hello,

I have a Discourse forum where we need to go through some very old posts and correct minor errors from the vBulletin import we did, like incomplete tags etc. The forum has no core modification installed, so it is basically the latest Discourse build as it is.

The problem we have is that once every 5-6 posts we edit, the post edit causes the thread to go back up in the timeline. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Is there a reason why some posts are being bumped up and others no?

Thanks.

Destroy all permalinks

@pfaffman wrote:

If you think that only search engines have links to your old URLs, the search engine databases have been updated, and you want to save as much as 20ms on every 404, you can do this:

cd /var/disourse/
./launcher enter app
rails c
Permalink.destroy_all
exit
exit

Thanks to @zogstrip for pointing out the obvious (once you know it)!
