Understanding progress bar post numbering

Continuing the discussion from Windows Phone IE scroll position quirks:

I'm able to reproduce the above bug report in Chrome 33 on Win 8 desktop. Post 56 is the one displayed at the top of the screen, though the top of it is scrolled off just ever so slightly. If I middle-click to open it in a new tab, the URL bar shows 56, 57 if opened in the same tab. There seems to be no difference in scroll position on same-tab vs new-tab. The first time I tried, the progress bar said 51. Now it consistently says 52.

I've added in an extra field to the composer window by overriding the additional_composer_buttons handlebars template. This all works gloriously and I can see the fields I want in there, however I'm trying to figure out how to get the contents of this field to be sent to the server when the topic is actually created.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The RubyRogues Parley site does not display a page title in Chrome's "Most Visited" area (one of the options for what shows in a blank tab). Not sure if there is someone on Discourse's end that can be done to fix this.

I'm trying to put the email-in feature to the test, but something isn't working right.

I've set up my gmail in accordance with this guide and I have successfully sent an email-reply from a test user that popped up as a reply on the forum. But I am unable to create new threads, Before I started successfully receiving new threads I received the following errors:

Error 1:

Error 2:

Setting up an importer plugin, the docker way. Help please

Martin Walsh wrote:

Just tried Discourse for the first time and installed via the Docker method. Really nice way to install everything and it 'just works'.

I have zero experience with docker/ruby and I'm trying to migrate an existing bbPress database, I found this script: https://github.com/dkobia/discourse-import-bbpress-plugin

Having had a scout round the forums, so I ssh into my container as follows:
I have no idea if this is the right way to do things, so I apologise for the noobness smile

cd /var/docker
./launcher ssh app
cd /var/www/discourse

I installed MySQL Lib

apt-get install libmysqlclient-dev

Checked out the plugin repo into ./plugins and copied the config and .rake into the config and lib/tasks directories as stated in the repo documentation.

Installing the mysql2 gem has issues.

bundle exec gem install mysql2

root@dev:/var/www/discourse# bundle exec gem install mysql2
Building native extensions. This could take a while...
Successfully installed mysql2-0.3.15
Parsing documentation for mysql2-0.3.15
unable to convert "\xA5" from ASCII-8BIT to UTF-8 for ../../extensions/x86_64-linux/2.0.0-static/mysql2-0.3.15/mysql2/mysql2.so, skipping
unable to convert "\xA5" from ASCII-8BIT to UTF-8 for lib/mysql2/mysql2.so, skipping
1 gem installed

It says 'installed' however not sure they really are. The proposed solution is to update rdoc.
Successfully installed rdoc-4.1.1

A re-run of installing mysql2 still has the same issue.

Also is this the correct way in general to rake the script?

root@dev:/var/www/discourse# bundle exec rake import:bbpress

As I get

rake aborted!
uninitialized constant Annotate
/var/www/discourse/lib/tasks/auto_annotate_models.rake:33:in `<top (required)>'

The file does exist:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 15554 Apr  2 11:34 lib/tasks/import_bbpress.rake

Thanks in advance for any help.

How should subcategory show its parent category?

Here's something I hacked together in Chrome's inspect element/developer console:

<td class="category">
  <span class="badge-category" style="background-color: #e9dd00; color: #000000; padding: 5px 7px;"><a href="/category/bug" class="badge-category" title="Bug reports on Discourse. Do be sure to search prior to submitting bugs. Include repro steps, and only describe one bug per topic please." style="
    padding-left: 0;
    color: #000000;
">bug</a><a style="
    background-color: green;
    padding: 2px 3px;
    /* font-size: 90%; */
" class="badge-category">complete</a>
</span>
</td>

I think that this - including the parent category name - would help for several workflows, not the least of which is that shown above (bug tracking).

I was prompted to do this by the wart in this topic:

[REL] Cheat Mod by kristof1104

Hi Everyone, I got bored and decided to make a cheat mod for Game Dev Tycoon. Using the mod to cheat will prevent your savegame from getting corrupt. Features: 0.1.1 - Add Money - Add Research Points - Add Fans - Add Dream Team ( Fill your team with Expert Teammembers) 0.1.2: - Move To Final level ( Hardware and RnD lab included) 0.1.3: - Ability to add AAA research 0.1.4 - Move in Time function, you can now goto any date in the game. 0.1.6 - Money can now be added By 1M, 10M, 20M - ...

See that [REL] in the title there? Yeah. That's ugly. I think it would be better if they could use a category like this:

(Modding: Release as opposed to "Modding: discussion", etc.)

We should probably have some subcategories here on Meta to do testing of the codepaths for subcategories...

For example, the "bug: open" and "bug: complete" categories featured above, where "bug: complete" has permissions of everyone can reply/see. (Actually, does that forbid moving topics into the category? I'll test and report back...)

Replacing Mailing lists: Email-In

$

Benjamin Kampmann wrote:

Hello everyone,

Update: I've finished developing this. You can find the entire patchset at the pull-request with the three features as three commits in the same order.

I am on the quest on supporting discourse to replace mailing lists (our internal google group system to be precise). One feature discourse is clearly missing to be able to replace mailing lists is to allow the creation of new topics via email. I call this Email-In. These are the three development steps I currently see:

1. General Email in

  1. let admins enable and define an incoming-email-address
  2. parse every email to the email-address in the POP3-account
  3. if it comes from a user of the forum and that user has a certain configurable trust level, post the message as a new topic in the forum

2. Email-In per Category

  1. to reduce the noise, we are using categories people can mute and such
  2. therefore it makes sense to allow to configure email-addresses per category if the general incoming-email-feature is enabled
  3. an email to that address then will be posted in that category instead of globally
  4. the privacy options for that category apply

3. Allowing "unknown" Email-In

  1. mailing lists are also sometimes configured as "a shared inbox", allowing third parties to post to it
  2. add another configuration option in the email-in-configuration (globally and per category) to allow emails from third-parties (off per default)
  3. when an email arrives in the inbox, that is not by any user known to the system, the header and its content will be posted as a quote in a new topic by the configured "system"-user
  4. also emails by users without the appropriate rights would be handled this way

Any feedback, ideas, features or other uses cases I might should consider, too?

Thanks
Ben

Category custom ordering

Justin Haglund wrote:

I see the wrench icon at /categories to modify the order of the categories. However, this does not seem to impact the dropdown menus at All Categories> and the hamburger. I assume these are probably ordered by number of posts, but I would prefer to have them respect custom ordering (uncategorized is currently second in the list above other important categories). Additionally, I cannot for the life of me find a way to order the subcategories. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
