In marketplace categories, should I remove old adverts?

We have quite a few adverts each year.

If I remove old ones (say 2+ years old), how it will affect forum ratings in Google and other search engines? Adverts are content too. Thoughts?

CTRL-C triggers "Create topic" shortcut

@jonathon wrote:

Description

Starting over the last few days, Discourse will open the New Topic composer when the user presses CTRL+C.

Pressing only C also triggers the New Topic composer as expected.

Related change?

On first glance it appears to be related to:

though that’s supposed to enable SHIFT+C

Discourse info

Version v2.0.0.beta1 +202
Ubuntu 16.04 (64-bit)
Docker CE 17.12 (overlayfs2)
Bytemark Cloud VPS

What should happen

Discourse should not capture CTRL+C.

What currently happens

Discourse interprets CTRL+C as C.

Steps to replicate

  1. Press CTRL+C (or CMD+C for Mac?);
  2. Observe New Topic composer appears.

Umlauts are NOT handled correctly for attached files

@terraboss wrote:

Hi friends,
I’ve trouble with some of my Downloads. Those ones with umlauts (ä,ö,ü) in their file name don’t get started with downloading by a simple click. Only via context menu. My Browser: Safari @ macOS High Sierra.

After the (force?) download is finished, the file name is corrupted. For example:

Right: Lösung.pdf
Wrong: Lösung.pdf

Lösung (test).pdf (1.8 KB)

I guess, this bug is regarded to ASCII. UTF-8 should handle this properly.

Any clue how to fix this?

Unexpected interaction between "suppress category on homepage" and "user preference for homepage"

@mcwumbly wrote:

I found this behavior somewhat unexpected:

  1. Create category “Foo” with setting “suppress this category from homepage”
  2. Create topic “Bar” in category “Foo”
  3. Top menu is set to Latest | Categories | Unread
  4. Topic “bar” is not shown on Latest, but is shown on Categories (so far so good).
  5. In user preferences, select “Categories” as the homepage
  6. Now, for that user, topic “bar” is shown on Latest but the entire Foo category is hidden on their Categories page.

I think it may improve things if there were less magic in the category setting. Instead of “suppress this category from homepage”, there could be two settings:

  • do not show topics from this category on Latest
  • do not show this category on the Categories page

Usercard for groups

@mcwumbly wrote:

It’d be nice if there were a “usercard” that would pop up when you click on a @mention for a group.

  1. Since I’m used to being able to click on a @mention without leaving the page, it’s unexpected that when I click on a @group mention, I’m taken away immediately (especially since there is no visual distinction in the default style between a @group and @user mention… looks like there’s a class that would at least allow us to address that with CSS)
  2. It’d also be a good place to show some basic information like:
    • Group description
    • Number of members
      I could see this showing some avatars recently active members with “+ N more”
    • Button-style links to a few key group pages/actions:
      • Activity
      • Members
      • Join Group

I swear I’ve seen this come up here before, but I haven’t been able to find it via search.

[paid] Preference to create & embed a topic via JavaScript only when a user clicks the "Start Discussion" link

$

@quimgil wrote:

What would you like done?

Currently when Embedding Discourse Comments via Javascript, a new Discourse topic is created whenever the corresponding external page is being loaded. The feature requested consists on creating the topic only when a user would click the “Start Discussion” link in the external page.

Details:

  • This preference could be defined per host at /admin/customize/embedding.
  • The “Start Discussion” link would include a rel="nofollow" in order to avoid as much as possible the creation of pages by bots.
  • The link would open in a new tab, in order to assure that the user doesn’t end accidentally in nowhere’s land, also to give a little more time to the new topic to be created.

When do you need it done?

No rush.

What is your budget, in $ USD that you can offer for this task?

Every feature has a price. I have cut as much complexity as possible in this request with the intention of making it more affordable. I’m a hobbyist willing to invest in the solution to this problem. If I cannot afford it alone, I might ask others to help co-funding.

Background: Embedding, but don't automatically create a topic until a user chooses to comment

Connection error after resizing DO Droplet

@tkrunning wrote:

Hi guys, I resized my DigitalOcean droplet today, and after that process was completed I haven’t been able to access my Discourse forum (I’m getting ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED).

It looks like something other than Discourse is using port 80… This is what I get when trying to restart the app (I have also rebuilt it, and restarted the DO droplet itself):

root@community:/var/discourse# ./launcher restart app
+ /usr/bin/docker stop -t 10 app
app

starting up existing container
+ /usr/bin/docker start app
Error response from daemon: driver failed programming external connectivity on endpoint app (aa51af7b44babc340fc1101b508092e99c65b05cdda7c39ce8337d4f56f0bde7): Error starting userland proxy: listen tcp 0.0.0.0:80: listen: address already in use
Error: failed to start containers: app

Any ideas how I can continue debugging or getting this fixed? Discourse was running perfectly fine until I resized the droplet…

Need ability to ban one or more users from a category

@Gunnar wrote:

We have a group/category that is only visible to logged in users. I.e. we’ve set trust_level_0 to have create/reply/see.

We have a few users who can be disruptive in this particular category, but their input is valued in other categories on the site. Simply asking them to stay away from that first category is not working, I need a way to kick them out, while still allowing them to participate in other categories.

Going the route of explicitly allowing everyone else, minus these few disruptive people, is not realistic as we have over 41,000 users.

Bottom line: We need a way of setting the permission of “all logged in users, minus NN1, NN1, NN3… NNn” to a category.

Any ideas on how this can be accomplished?

Thanks,
Gunnar

Ways to easily seed content as posted from various users (startup)

@password04 wrote:

Hey Guys,

First post on here… I’ve been using Discourse in one or two other places now and i’m just about to deploy it for my own site.

Among the various ways that I will see the various categories with content is to post it myself. For this I plan on creating a bunch of ghost accounts to help get the ball rolling. I read that’s what they did at Reddit and seems to be a common approach. That said, it still seems controversial.

What is the general attitude towards that here? Is it generally frowned upon and should I not bother.

If I was to embark down that path are there any tools that would help me? i.e. save me from having to manually login as each user. I am thinking about some kind of “god mode” where I can start a thread under a specified user, where the user is created prior to creating the the post.

Changing/removing API rate limit with category creation

$

@lukespragg wrote:

I’ve been running into an issue with creating categories via the API. It seems there is a limit, but that limit doesn’t seem to be customizable nor does it seem to have a setting to disable it anywhere.

The error I get is: We have a daily limit on how many times that action can be taken. Please wait 17 seconds before trying again.

The amount of seconds seems to always be under 20 seconds, but never accurate as it states that it is a daily limit and I’ve tried within a minute of the last attempt. I’ve also tried adjusting ALL rate limits under the admin dashboard to 1000+, but none of them seem to affect category creation.

The only available rate limits on the dashboard: max topics, private messages, likes, bookmarks, flags, edits, invites, topic invitations, topics, prints, and logins.

I’m using the GitHub - discourse/discourse_api: Ruby API for Discourse for it, which worked fine until the unspecified rate limit was hit.

Am I missing something? This isn’t coming from nginx either, as the message is from Discourse and the rate limiting template for nginx has been disabled.

Global rate limits in Discourse

$

@sam wrote:

Discourse ships with 3 different global rate limits that can be configured by site admins.

Global per-ip rate limits

These limits apply to every unique IP address that hits the Discourse application. (files that are served directly from the filesystem or the CDN are excluded)

By default this rate limit is disabled, but we are considering enabling it out of the box.

DISCOURSE_MAX_REQS_PER_IP_MODE : default none, this rate limit does not apply out of the box yet. (other options are warn and warn+block)

DISCOURSE_MAX_REQS_PER_IP_PER_MINUTE: number of requests per IP per minute (default is 200)

DISCOURSE_MAX_REQS_PER_IP_PER_10_SECONDS: number of requests per IP per 10 seconds (default is 50)

DISCOURSE_MAX_REQS_RATE_LIMIT_ON_PRIVATE: should the rate limit apply to private IPs accessing Discourse? default is false.

User API rate limits

The mobile applications acquire a user API key per device to access Discourse on behalf of a user (using an open protocol). These API keys are very tightly limited.

DISCOURSE_MAX_USER_API_REQS_PER_MINUTE: default 20
DISCOURSE_MAX_USER_API_REQS_PER_DAY: default 2880

Admin API rate limits

The administrative API keys can be generated via the yoursite.com/admin/api/keys page. These keys can operate on behalf of users, but require administrative privileges to generate. They are limited, but not as strictly as the user API keys.

DISCOURSE_MAX_ADMIN_API_REQS_PER_KEY_PER_MINUTE : 60

Versions of Discourse prior to 1.9 did not include this limiting.

What should I do if I hit a rate limit?

If you are consuming the API programmatically and receive back a 429 status code you should respect it and slow down.

As an end user you should not really experience rate limits if you do, slow down. You could trigger it by opening 50 tabs real quick or doing something like that.

How do I amend these limits?

To amend the limits add the desired change into your app.yml file in the env section.

If you are hosted by Discourse contact team@discourse.org

Separate control for the forum title

@Blade wrote:

Hello!

I found this topic, but without any answer, so I decided to give it another shot :D.

Like in that topic, for SEO purposes, I’d like to use a descriptive title, with more words (around 64 characters). But that title is automatically “grabbed” by %{site_name} and used in several places, like emails, notifications and welcoming messages.

I know that for the emails I can edit the templates and add whatever name I want instead of %{email_prefix} in the Subject, and %{site_name} in the body, but I can’t edit the “From” part of the email as well, which will still be displayed as %{site_name}.

As an example, I used a “Forgot password” email. Here’s a screenshot:

As you can see, I managed to add “Hero’s Keep” instead of %{email_prefix} and %{site_name}, but the “From” part still displays the big forum title. I can’t change that from inside the templates.

Speaking of %{email_prefix}, I saw this topic from Dec '17 which contained a screenshot with an “email prefix” field, which I can’t find anymore. That looks like it could have solved the problem, or at least part of it.

For the welcoming and notification messages, I guess I could use the Text Content to replace %{site_name}, but it’s quite some work to do, especially if we add the email templates on top. Which brings me to my questions: Is there some sort of workaround for this, or is there a fix which I might have missed? Basically, is there a way to separate the title from the rest, so it won’t get used in several other places?

Thank you!

If you open this very URL while logged into this forum and current release, the feature works as intended:

Open it in an incognito session though, and you’ll see:

Neither button accomplishes anything, and if you use the login button in the header you don’t get returned to the new-message URL.

Enable similar topics popup for private message composer

I’m trying to make it easy for users to send private messages to a support group alongside the public community topics. I would like the “Your topic is similar to…” popup to show while they are writing a private message to the support group just like it would if they were creating a new topic to help them notice any public topics that already address their question.

I couldn’t find any setting or plugin that can enable this, does this seem tough to implement as a plugin if there’s no existing way to do it?

Deleting Uncategorized Categories

Thank you!
