"//mydomain.in/uploads/default/1/3a482e09fcb6aa44.jpg"

while editor shows

"/uploads/default/1/3a482e09fcb6aa44.jpg"

Now testing: mobile (small screen) layouts on key pages

We just pushed a change to allow mobile layouts, on the topic page only, for devices with screens under 7" in size:

It is mostly the hard work of @awesomerobot and @Neil to get this working. This is just an initial pass, we will be improving it greatly over the next week or two.

Remember that Discourse only supports very modern mobile devices running iOS 6+, Android 4.1+, or Windows Phone 8 (the IE10 version).

That said, try the topic page on your mobile device and feel free to report issues here or, even better, submit PRs for fixes!

I've read the frontpage and the FAQ and done some searching on this forum, but there's still something pretty fundamental that I don't understand about Discourse. Does it deliver the content via email, or is it only an online forum?

If it does work as an email system, is there a way to watch particular categories/tags? Is it possible to by default receive only the first conversation message for some categories and then choose to subscribe to the entire thread if it's interesting? Conversely, is it possible to choose to receive all messages for certain categories automatically?

Centering images

Hi, i was loonking into more formmating options and stuck with a problem with centering things in a post.

<center></center>

Works nice on texts.

Like this

But when i put emoji or images within center tags, its breaks

This text is centered, and this emoji
smiley should be also centered

If i put an image link discourse doesn't even embed the image.

Also, is there anywhere i can find the formatting options?

Thanks

Welcome to meta, the official site for discussing the next-gen open source Discourse forum software. You'll find topics on features, bugs, hosting, development, and general support here.

Discourse is early beta software

It is fine to experiment with Discourse, but be prepared for bleeding edge beta software pain, at least for the next 6 months. Discourse is most applicable for new communities, because there's a lot of social and technical friction to any change in existing communities.

Before posting on meta, please...

  • Visit the http://meta.discourse.org/categories page to get a broad overview of what's going on here.

  • Browse around the topics on the homepage to understand what is being discussed here, and what the categories mean.

  • Please search before opening a new topic, as someone might have already created the topic you want to open. Note that we do search on your behalf as you compose a new topic, too.

  • When creating a topic, be sure to select the correct category so it is easier to find. It is OK to leave category blank if none feel applicable.

Other Discourse Forums

Eventually, the home page will be a sort of Discourse Hub where we showcase Discourse forums, interesting topics on Discourse forums, and a general directory of Discourse forums. But that's not ready yet! Until then, here's a topic listing all the known Discourse forum instances so far.

Thanks for helping us make Discourse the best 100% open-source discussion platform for the next decade of the Internet.

What the title said. I'm on Firefox. I seem to have to right-click and open a new link. I normally do that anyway so it wasn't much of a bother but I thought I'd mention it as it has happened for me consistently. Click a link and nothing happens. Or I go to a blank page.

Should I update to HEAD on git or is there a configuration setting I need to change. Attachments have been working for months for us and I haven't really changed anything with respect to our discourse configuration; only updating when a new release is available.

How to change the `relative_url_root` config parameter?

Giovanni Gherdovich (gghh) wrote:

Hello.

how do I set the value for relative_url_root, the variable that is used in the config.ru file?

I see it being used as in this snippet:

map ActionController::Base.config.try(:relative_url_root) || "/" do
  run Discourse::Application
end

I am setting up Discourse in a private network that I make available to the internet via a reverse proxy with Apache, and I use the mod_proxy_html module to convert links from the "internal namespace" to the "external namespace".
Basically the discourse machine serves pages with relative link as /message-bus/, and the reverse proxy is supposed to convert those links like /internal/message-bus/.
The gotcha is that many of the Discourse links are generated by javascript at "browser time", so no way my Apache can kick in and convert the links.

I imagined that hardcoding my "external root" for relative links changing relative_url_root would do the trick.
Of course, if there is a cleaner way to achieve my goal, I'd be glad to hear.

Shouldn't you be able to tag with multiple categories?

A LOT of forums try to help with a huge volume of users by having an entire hierarchy of forums. The problem with this is that things SPAN categories. I'm thinking of HEAVILY trafficked forums like XDA Developers. They have sections for each phone and then even sections for the vendor-specific model. Seems to me if you wanted to be a successful forum replacement, you'd have to target the most successful forums (e.g. XDA Developers) and review their actual usage of features and determine how to solve those same problems they are solving, but in a better way.

This is where I think allowing multiple categories (a la SO tags) would be a better solution to the extensive hierarchy of sub forums which a lot of big popular forums tend to use to help users find things and track things.

Please let us know, what code (ex: https://gist.github.com/jhilden/6634320) needs to be written in those inherited class so that we can use discourse with main rails app.

Sync the users from main site to discourse is mentioned in http://meta.discourse.org/t/give-me-those-authentication-hooks/3943/16, is it the right and only way or is there any other way (Discourse way) ?

Cookie auth solution is scattered in many places, so please help us to implement it.

Hey, it would be really useful to be able to set the security settings on a category so that you can only see it if you are a logged in user. Ie, theres no granularity between 'everyone' and 'trust_level_1', there should probably be a 'members'/'trust_level_0' group. (I believe this already exists, but you cannot assign against it on the category security tab)
