Datetime Precision and odd Activity Column Format

Dan Pickett wrote:

We recently upgraded our discourse installation's postgres database and in doing so, it looks like the precision was lost on all timestamps. I investigated and ensured the precision is persisting via psql and it is. It appears the JSON serialization is no longer returning the decimals for times that we're seeing on other installations (as indicated in example: http://discuss.launchacademy.com/t/programming-interview-questions/86.json)

The result (I think) is an odd display of time related information:

Can anyone point me in the right direction of what might be happening here?

"View older notifications" doesn't show you the same stream

So I had an overload of notifications

(I could swear there was a thread about how notifications like these should be merged)
I wanted to see if there were other ones further down the stream, so I opted to "view older notifications". But all that link does is take me to my activity page, which only shows activity that directly involved me somehow, not including activity I've expressed an interest in, i.e. watching/tracking.

In other words, we're missing a proper Notifications page in the profile.

Taming wild PM notifications

Sam Saffron wrote:

At the moment, if you ever find yourself in a private conversation there are 3 very painful side effect.

  1. You will get one green notification per message.
  2. The green notification will not go away till you read the particular message.
  3. You have no way to get off the boat.

Effectively this limits the usefulness and prevalence of private conversations.

I suggest.

  1. We roll up notification so you only get a single green notification for all messages in a PM. As new messages come in we roll them up. Display something like "(4) my awesome private convo" in the notification.
  2. Change the clearing logic, so the notification goes away as soon as you visit the PM regardless of the number of messages you have left to read on that private conversation.
  3. Add a subscription control at the bottom, with watching / tracking / mute at least to allow user to get off the train.
  4. Add back in the [PM] string which was always supposed to appear on email notifications from private messages.

Thoughts?

I started composing a new topic in Firefox. I waited for the draft to be saved and then opened Discourse in Chrome so I could paste in a screenshot. When I resumed my draft in Chrome, the category wasn't restored. Confirmed with two different categories, "bug" and "feature."

Cloud 66 EasyDeploy for Discourse

Today we released Cloud 66 EasyDeploy for Discourse: https://github.com/cloud66-samples/discourse

Linke here: http://blog.cloud66.com/post/62900887610/open-source-meet-easydeploy

This is a fork of the main repo with no changes to the code and only a .cloud66 folder added. Using this, you can deploy Discourse to AWS, Rackspace, DigitalOcean, Linode and Joyent in less than 15 minutes.

We have tried to keep the whole process very simple: create a Cloud 66 account and build a stack with the given Github repository URL. That's it.

I hope it can be useful to others as much as Discourse has helped us at our company.

Enjoy!

When I run the tests in Vagrant using the code from github with no modifications I get a lot of failed tests.

I've worked with projects where this was normal, but thought it wasn't this case with Discourse. Is this normal or should I be looking for problems in how I installed Discourse/Vagrant/ect? ETA- when I run the rails sever Discourse works fine.

Translation Tools: Transifex? Localeapp?

Continuing the discussion from Internationalization / localization, which has become a massive, unfocused topic:

Let's talk about translation tools and the process for getting translations done. If we were going to adopt a third-party tool to get translations done, which should be used? From the Internationalization / localization topic, there seem to be two leaders: Transifex and Localeapp.

Here are the things we need from a translation process:

  • Notifications for translators when there's work to do, only for the languages they care about.
  • No cost to translators.
  • An easy way to upload our english yml files without clobbering anyone's work, ideally using an API.
  • An easy way to get all the translations and add them to the Discourse repo in github. We must be able to automate this so it's a one-click operation!

I played with Transifex briefly, and it seems to have a very nice interface for translators. It has the ability to watch languages, leave comments on translations, tagging, etc.

Does anyone know about automation of this whole process?

Name must be shorter than 15 characters

Continuing the discussion from Unable to create group:

Sorry but still cannot create more than a 15 characters Group Name in /admin/groups in Version 0.9.8.3
Still returns "Name must be shorter than 15 characters"
Also returning "Name must only include numbers, letters and underscores"
when inputting space or accentuated characters (french).
These are the 2 last "NO GO" big details preventing me from switching. frowning

Suggestion: Group_Name, like Username, could have a Display_Name and a Database_Name fitting your limitations, which could be used as the @address if needed. That Database_Name could be generated automatically, cause we only care about the Group_Name we display to users and it sure cannot look nice with underscores and spelling errors.
Thanks for your consideration. You made it for the Topic_Title, so...
Great great work btw.

Has anybody created themes for Discourse?

Continuing the discussion from Reading Topics and Context:

I'm starting to notice, since I had that 60 second auto-notify thing on for awhile before configuring it out of my view of the world, that the algorithm prompting for suggested topics to read next at the bottom seems to continually surface the same items. If I go read one of them, a new one takes its place, which makes good sense. Then, inevitably, I get to a list of 5 things that are not compelling enough for me to jump to.

Two thoughts on this:

  • You could do something simple almost like a captcha reload, Just give me a button to cycle that list to the next five.
  • This would be a great place to display the view that I used to get here (e.g. all unread) either instead of the suggestions, or in addition to them.

I think it's a good idea that we can assign a class for a body based on category name or something like that. In that way, we can customize each category to have a difference styling.

I know not everyone needs this, but it'd be nice to have.

When looking at the user profile of an admin as a regular user one can see all the hidden posts as well as the 'topic is now invisible/unpinned..' posts. One can see removed posts when looking at a user account similarly.

I think those should be visible to admins only? The pinned/unpinned/invisible just add clutter, maybe those could be moved to another tab than Posts?
