Mandrill Email Server Setup on Discourse and email activation

@shadowninjazx wrote:

Hello, so I installed discourse on EC2 Amazon Linux first, but then i came across many email issues. I cannot even send a test email because I could not install python3-yaml

but NOW I reinstalled discourse on Ubuntu 14 and I can finally send a test email with ./launcher testmail app thing. But when I tried to create admin account, I never receive the activation email.

For the smtp configuration I am using Mandrill which everyone recommend but I still have problems with not receiving activation emails. I am pretty sure all the inputs are correct. Also I saw a post that I have to restart sidekiq and reset DB server name or something. I do not know what to do ?!

Also note I am not using a domain name, I am using the IP address for the server. I wonder if that changes anything.

Please help!
thanks

What is a Wiki Post?

@erlend_sh wrote:

A wiki post is a special type of post that can be edited by any user on your forum.

To mark a post as wiki-editable, you need moderator/admin privileges. (or TL4?)

Properties of Wiki Posts

  • Post will be highlighted (default is green)
  • Takes advantage of Discourse's built in revisions.
  • Post can be edited by any user with TL1(?) or above.
  • If two users are editing the post at the same time, the latest save becomes the latest revision, thus overwriting the contents of the previous save.

Currently NOT supported in Wiki Posts

  • (Automatic) Table of Contents
  • Edit lock / Simultaneous editing
  • Footnotes

Will update image once 1.4 goes stable.

Properties of Likes

  • All likes are public:
    • Each post shows which users have liked it
    • A user's profile tracks all given and received likes.
  • "Liking" a post will trigger a notification to the post's author (default user setting).
  • Likes can also trigger badges.
    • Example: a post with 10 likes will grant the author a "Nice Post" badge (default admin setting).
  • You can not like your own post.
  • You can only like a post once.
  • You can only undo a like within 10 minutes after submitting the like. (default admin setting).
  • Likes affect post rankings (undocumented) (Top, external comments etc.)
  • The amount of likes you can pass out in a day depends on your Trust Level.

What is "Infinite Scrolling"?

$

@erlend_sh wrote:

"Infinite Scrolling" is a term for what is happening if you're scrolling through a page filled with content and - as, or before, you reach the bottom - more content is loaded automatically

Discourse attempts to utilise infinite scrolling in a way that solely adds to the user's reading experience, and never detracts from it.

  • Discourse takes full advantage of HTML5's History API.
  • As you scroll, the browser address bar is updated according to your reading position.
  • Back/forward buttons work as expected.
  • The pagination widget tells you how far along you are, and lets you jump to the beginning, end, or an exact postID of your choice.
  • Only JSON calls are made. No site elements need to be redrawn in order to load more content, which means minimal bandwidth usage.

Upgrade failed because Docker out of date

@zajako wrote:

Hello,

I was trying to use the admin panel update and it froze up.

This caused the main pages to stop working, only admin pages worked.

I went to /var/docker and did "git pull"

it fixed things so the website works again however I can't rebuild the app as this happens:
boards:/var/docker# ./launcher rebuild app
ERROR: Docker version 0.11.1 not supported, please upgrade to at least 1.2.0, or recommended 1.2.0

I can't figure out how to update docker by itself and the admin panel is pretty broken now, not sure if the boards themselves are functioning fully either.

This is what my admin panel looks like: http://files.zajako.com/brRN

Honestly, I'm not sure my /var/docker folder is docker at all, I think its just discourse. I installed it back when discourse was in the 0.x versions using the tutorial posted at the time.

So I'm not sure what to do to restore things to full functionality, anyone able to help?

Thanks

Edit existing source of the forum

If you want to go to the point (tl;dr), skip the first 2 paragraphs stuck_out_tongue

I've been looking for this since a week ago. I'm starting to think that, somewhat, is not possible.
I'm not a discourse expert, nor a forum creator expert, nor a RoR expert, and I never used a VPS, only hostings for websites. BUT! I'm a software engineer, so no problem wink

I have discourse installed in a droplet in Digital Ocean, using docker, so it's in a container. I'm starting to control how discourse works, and all the admin services, but I wanna go further. I want to make the forum mine, I want to be able to control every single corner of the forum, and of course, that is not possible even with the millions of options that Discourse has from the Admin (Thanks, dudes!).

Let's go to the point. One of the things I want to do is to edit the existing source. As far as I know, that is not possible with the HTML customization, since this is only adding new elements, and not editing the existing ones. How can I do this?
Let's put an example to make it easier:

@rewphus points at "Header" when leaving us that beatiful piece of code. But as I said before, it is not possible, since we want to edit something that already exists, the rows of the topics table.
So... how can I do this? Thanks for all the documentation you can supply here, guys.

P.S: I don't mind If I have to make a plugin or whatever, ready for all wink

WP Discourse Embed Plugin

@techAPJ wrote:

I just published a new WordPress plugin to embed Discourse comments using @eviltrout's excellent embed code.

https://github.com/techAPJ/wp-discourse-embed

This WordPress plugin injects the Discourse embed code in blog posts, allowing you to use Discourse as community engine.

It takes two options:

Discourse URL should be the URL of your Discourse instance, this field is required.

Embed blog posts published after date is an optional field, if provided only blog posts published after the date you provided will use Discourse comments (hiding the original WordPress comments). Blog posts published before the provided date will use original WordPress comments.

Also, this plugin assumes that you have already configured embedding settings as per @eviltrout's instructions here.

That's it once you have activated the plugin and provided Discourse URL, you should start seeing Discourse comments embedded under blog posts!

Download the plugin, and start contributing! -- https://github.com/techAPJ/wp-discourse-embed

Note: This is the initial version of the plugin and has scope for improvements, it should not be considered stable.

Custom Docker-Discourse bootstrapping from private GIT repository

$

@RabidFX wrote:

Hello all o/

I'm working on a custom theme for Discourse. Everything works well in the Vagrant VM, and it's now time to try a "real" install.
I pulled the standard Docker image and modified the templates so the bootstrapping would pull from my fork of the discourse/discourse repo, and not the original.

Thing is, the repo I will pull from uses SSH key authentication for the all users, including git.

As expected, it fails on bootstrapping with the following message:

I, [2015-07-06T12:25:59.424104 #36]  INFO -- : > cd /var/www/discourse && git fetch custom-origin release
Host key verification failed.
fatal: Could not read from remote repository.

How can I pull from a private repo expecting a key when bootstrapping?

If the alternative is easier: this repo is hosted on the docker host machine itself. So I could also read directly from the container in the host filesystem... But I assume this is harder than SSHing in, this being a possible Docker security hole...

Is it possible to automatically noindex each new Discourse topic page created from a WP post?

@holden wrote:

The title says it all. I'm worried we might end up with too many pages with thin content and get in trouble with the big G (panda content issues).

Another idea. How about the following options?

  • [checkbox] Noindex new Discourse topic pages [checkbox] Remove
  • [checkbox] Noindex after this number of replies [field]

That way, if a page becomes active, the noindex can be removed.

Am I concerned about this unnecessarily? I'm in the process of setting up my first blog and community so I don't have much experience. I do, however, have experience with Google penalties so I want to be cautious (damn Google!).

Creating an RSS feed with new topics only in a category

We pipe the RSS feed from some topics (mostly dev-support related) into some of our chat rooms.

I believe that we previously had it configured to show only new topics, and not new posts on existing topics. Unfortunately, we accidentally nuked that setup, and what we've got now is bringing in new posts. The resulting feed is too noisy, to allow any other kind of conversation.

This is the current feed: https://community.coinbase.com/c/developers.rss

Is there a "new topics only" modifer for that?

`mailtest` script never really going to work

@DeanMarkTaylor wrote:

Over time I've noted a number of posts users reporting that mail isn't getting delivered and the mailtest doesn't deliver mail.

Never used mailtest myself - but this bugged me so I took a look...

Looking at the code for mailtest it seems that the mail is always being sent from nobody+launcher-mailtest@discourse.org:

This isn't going to work well (for non-discourse.org hosted installs):

  1. The SPF record for discourse.org specifically blocks all mail not from the allowed the white listed records with a -all.
    • "v=spf1 mx ptr ip4:64.71.148.0/29 ip6:2001:470:1:3c2::/64 include:_spf.google.com -all"
  2. It's not a good plan to test sending from discourse.org this should really be a domain the user controls.
    • Incorrect SPF and DKIM records will really screw up delivery.

Hope this helps.

"Send a invite" button in a more visible section of the site?

Hi all

The "Send a invite" button (site wide, not topic invite) is placed right now in a kind of obscure path, Profile > Invites > Send a Invite. Can I place that button in a more visible section of my site? the header, for example.

Maybe I can use a link to the Invites page (/users/codighorror/invited), but what I want is the button that trigger the "Send a Invite" popup.

Thanks in advance
