Bring Back Permanent Pins

@KazWolfe wrote:

Recently, I noticed that you have to give a date for pinned topics.

This is a rather odd setting, because there are some pins that are meant to be forever. Things like category bulletins and the like.

There's a workaround by setting a date to the very far future (9999-12-31), but I'd rather just be able to hit a button and forget about it.

Was there a reason for this over the "pinned until someone unpins it" setup? Can we get that back?

Search usability and data

Is there a way to get any info on how users are using search? What they are searching for?

We have a lot of categories, so I thought the search would be used almost as a way of global navigation.

I think the ability to search in topic by default should be a community option. Most users may prefer using it as a way to jump around the larger community.

But it's hard to make the right suggestions without the data.

Create/See and Create Permissions (again)

Continuing the discussion from "Create" Permission:

Now that the "whisper" functionality (http://i.imgur.com/orfu6df.png) has been added to Discourse, I feel like this topic should have new life breathed into it again.

This proposal is for two new permission sets: Create, and Create/See. Both of these could be used in "fringe" forums where confidentiality or experience is required.

These won't be used on all the Discourse forums in existence, but the ones that could/want to use something like this would immensely benefit.

Create Permission

This permission allows you to post to a category, but not to see un-pinned threads that you weren't explicitly invited to.

Something like this would be used to ensure confidentiality -- only you, specific groups, and the site staff can see what's happening in your topic.

I could see a use case as a "support forum" where people can post issues and get replies from only verified people.

Now, I know that this can already be achieved by using private messages, but that causes some organizational problems (you might have to do some searching for what you want). Additionally, it causes extra pains of deciding who is invited to the private message.

Create/See Permission

This has already been discussed, so I'll keep it short.

Basically, this permission lets everyone create a thread and see all other threads, but not to reply to non-own threads.

It's main use would be to only allow experienced/trusted/verified/whatever users be able to reply and answer threads. This can be used in all sorts of environments, most particularly as a Q&A system (especially combined with the Solved plugin). Anyone can post a question, but only users who are verified/know what they're doing can actually answer it.

If I enable this, but still allow users to upload their own avatars, will the SSO avatar be the "default" until one is set? If not, is there a way to do this?

Show heart icon even if logged out

@charleswalter wrote:

To drive more users to register/login, it would be great if the heart icon was shown on each post, even if the user hasn't initiated a session. This is similar to the way Twitter works. They don't hide the ability to favorite a message if you're logged in. Instead, they have it as an additional call-to-action to encourage/prompt users to login.

Hi there.
I just got my $99 discourse install set up.
It looks great and dns is all working.
When I register a user, the activation email gets sent correctly.
However, test emails don't seem to arrive! Should I be worried about this?
I can actually see them in mandrill in the outbound tab, and it even says "delivered".
However it didn't actually arrive to my inbox.
Help please, i'm concerned that it means only certain type of emails actually work...

Hello Guys,

My name is Siraj, I'm running educational based tech blog on WordPress. Now I want to start my own forum to engage my readers and website users. So I found the name of discourse software for forums and after see this pricing, I'm little bit confuse. Because there monthly prices are too high and not set in out budget. So under pricing we found one time fee pacakge, which looks like pretty good but I'm slightly confused that, what package your are offering in one time fee/what things are includes in one time fee $99. Is this package includes forum software for single site or unlimited sites, life time updates or not, unlimited staff members allow or not.
Is discourse need shared hosting or VPN servers for forum installation?
One time package software can be use another domains?
Please answer these following queries as soon as possible.
Thank You!

Category Naming / Site Organization Conventions?

$

@JeffreyKeefer wrote:

We will be using Discourse for a biennial discussion series, with 5-6 discussions (one per month) and each one have 3-4 focused topics. It was suggested that each of the monthly discussion would be its own category and then a topic for each of the 3-4 facilitated discussions. Firstly, does this seem the best set-up?

Part two of this question involves the category naming. Is there any realistic way to have more than 2 words in the category name, or is there a better way to set up this organization? We want people to come onto our site and see the name of the series, the month, facilitator for that month, and title of the threaded discussion, though all of that would not fit within the name itself.

Can somebody please help us work through how we should set up and name these, so as not to be overwhelming, but also organize what people will see when they reach our site and what that makes notifications look like?

Thank you!!

Request: Topic Pruning

@KazWolfe wrote:

After reading this topic and realizing that Discourse had no built-in pruning system, I came to make this post.

This would be a system where Discourse would automatically delete threads older than x. It should be configured on a per-category basis, much like the autolock methods.

This would be especially useful for categories or topics that are relevant for only a very short amount of time, at which point they'll never be looked at or heard from again. I personally would use this to provide my forum with a sandbox where they can test Discourse's features and formatting. Within about an hour or two, the topic would be deleted and everything will return to normal.

Heavy caching when customising - any way to bypass?

@dylandamsma wrote:

Hi there,

This is my first post, tried to find an answer to this question, but couldn't find it.

I am running a discourse install on a 1GB DO server and currently trying to edit our styling.

The caching however is so heavy, that it can take up to a day to show any changes. I tried:
- Clearing cache (no result)
- Using other browsers (no result)
- Update: tried rebuilding; no result.
- I only have 1 style enabled. (see screenshot)

Previewing styling gives an older version as well and even removes some of the styling.. I am lost.
I checked whether I am targeting the right elements, and I am 100% sure they are correct.

Is there any way I can solve this or bypass the caching when editing the styling?

Best,
Dylan

Why do new users need to click an extra button to Activate their account?

Testing out discourse with a new community and got this feedback from one member.

Is there any way to eliminate the need for having to activating your account via email in order to use the site? i.e. create your and account and immediately be able to interact with the site. Or, allow the loading of the URL in the email to act as the activation rather than requiring an additional click on a dummy page?

I feel like there must be a topic on here somewhere with similar discussion, but haven't found anything yet. Regardless, what do people think about this? Particularly the last idea:

allow the loading of the URL in the email to act as the activation rather than requiring an additional click on a dummy page?
