How can I surely check if my VPS running Discourse is overloaded most of time and needs upgrade?

Still running 10$ VPS at DigitalOcean, I started to experience slow loading a few days ago. Not only do I understand that the VPS is the minimal recommended one, but I can also see there is lack of space. Running just around 400 users and just 50 of them being active, I'm confused whether it is disk space and/or VPS processing power that is a bottleneck.

What is the best way to check and know for sure?

Hiya
So forum up and running, a user has asked me to change their user name for them (I have disabled this option in the admin for users)- when I go into her account it simply says "there was an error changing the user name". Any thoughts? (I have looked at previous threads here, too).

Thanks!

Emoji Plugin Irregularity

@ColdSun wrote:

Background
I've created a test plugin to familiarize myself with adding custom emoji. During the process, I decided to add quite a few emoji (most everything from fontawesome) as an exercise. The plugin can be located at: https://github.com/SGColdSun/fa-emoji

Issue
Everything worked as intended initially. Went out to dinner, came back a few hours later to find that the emoji in past (and new) posts only displays correctly in the topic title, and the preview. The body of the message (once submitted), displays the emoji for a second or two before it defaults back to the :emoji-here: text.

An example of the issue can be seen here:

Additional Notes
There is no errors in the log. No related errors in Google's dev console.

Converting to Subfolder

If I have an existing Discourse and would like to move it to a subfolder, what steps do I need to take to keep my existing articles/topics/etc?

I'm comfortable with external links breaking because topics moved from my.discourse.com to my.discourse.com/subfolder. But will internal links break? Should I expect anything else to break and are there steps to fix these things? Or does moving to a subfolder require a fresh start?

Hi guys,

I would like to thanks the Discourse team and community for creating this software and writing all the guides and how-to set it up properly. I discovered Discourse two weeks ago while looking at GoHugo forums (which run on Discourse).

Working with Discourse has been an enjoyable experience so far. I had seen coworkers use Docker, Redis and Ruby but never had the chance to work with them so it's also a great learning experience too. Understanding what those were helped a lot while settings things up.

Also LMAO at people arguing with @codinghorror about stuff they obviously don't know anything about like asking for feature. I don't know how this guy is still sane :stuck_out_tongue:

And to finish I'd like to link to the guide I wrote on how to get your Amazon WS and Cloudflare services to work with Discourse. There's a lot of handful guides on meta.discourse about Amazon AW so I made sure to link to all of them when appropriate.

I'll make sure to detail all the stuff I learn about AWS that has not been documented so far, like how to fix the pg_dump version mismatch with Amazon RDS.

That's it. Cheers mate!

Moving multiple posts resets timestamp only on first post

$

@jomaxro wrote:

Summary:

When selecting and moving multiple posts to another thread, the first post moved has its timestamp reset to the time of the move, while the remaining posts retain the original timestamp.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Select more than one post in a thread.
  2. Move posts to another thread.

Expected Results:

All posts retain original time stamp.

Actual Results:

Original post timestamp changes to time of move. Results in strange timestamps in thread (potential for a post later in thread to have an earlier time than a post before it).

Notes:

Noticed this when moving all posts in a topic to another one. Did not pay attention to whether this happens with moving only one post, or moving multiple posts without selecting the OP. Will update if I have an opportunity to check this.

Reopening: User avatar still appearing after topic split

@jomaxro wrote:

Summary:

After moving posts to a new topic, the Latest view still shows users whose posts no longer remain in the thread. The summary box under the OP does not show the additional user, however. @sam deployed a fix back on November 17, however this seems to have regressed. No date on when it regressed, sorry!

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Create a topic
  2. Have another user respond
  3. Move all posts by other users to a new topic

Expected Results:

Latest view only shows user images whose posts are still in the topic

Actual Results:

Latest view shows user images whose posts were previously moved.

New Messaging Workflow

@sam wrote:

We have been lacking decent workflows for dealing with messages. At small scale it is not much of a problem, if you only have 3 messages, you don't need too much fancy. But as you accumulate messages working with them becomes hard.

Recently I added a few features to ease working with message backlogs.

  • You can archive messages in bulk from your inbox which moves them to the "Archive" folder

  • At the bottom of every message there is an "Archive" button.

  • Messages can be similarly moved out of the Archive mailbox

  • If anything new is posted in an archived message, message moves from Archive into Inbox.

This round of changes effectively enable "inbox 0" if you so desire.

In additional to this change, we are also aware of archiving in a "Team" context. If you are in a team mailbox (or message) and archive it, it will be come archived for the entire team. This allows a team member to clear up the entire team mailbox.

Move posts out of topic and delete split post does not revert timestamp

$

@jomaxro wrote:

Summary:

Moving posts out of a topic and deleting the "xyz split this topic..." post does not revert topic timestamp to previous time

Steps to reproduce:

  1. User post in topic
  2. Split post out of topic
  3. Delete the "split this topic" post from the topic

Expected Results:

Topic timestamp reverts to last post timestamp or most recent OP edit, whichever is latest

Actual Results:

Topic timestamp remains time when topic was split

Notes:

Specific issue here is for old topics that are resurfaced by a necropost. After determining post was in wrong spot and moving it, I deleted the "split the topic" post to try and "re-bury" the topic. To a non-admin user who opens the topic, they do not see anything different from before the user posted recently, so the timestamp should reflect that.

Cannot undelete topic/post actions like pinned and split

@jomaxro wrote:

Putting this in feature category as I am not sure it is a bug. Certain "admin" functions in a topic result in a "pseudo-post" of sorts, like pinning a topic, unpinning a topic, and splitting a topic. These system generated posts have the ability to be edited, as well as deleted, but unlike a typical post, there does not appear to be a way to undelete them. Is this intentional?

We create Alliances. Each Alliance would have its own sub-forum. These Alliances, when we Enjoin them, can do all the things needed to rapidly grow their Endeavor(s). Each such forum(s) would have content (mainly downloadable docs, videos, images), followers and discussions. Active followers may well want to become actively engaged in an Enjoined initiative. Enjoined initiatives would most likely have their own software - as appropriate for building something significant, getting it right and doing so on time. Forum credentials vary. Some are public, some are semi-private and some are 'by invitation'.

Again, Many thanks for your help. An Example Alliance brings investors, folks seeking investment, together via our match-maker Alliances and Engineering Alliances.

Ideas for contest score formula for a 3-months long contest; goal - spread forum topics in social networks

$

@meglio wrote:

So, we've got almost 1k topics and we would now like to spread them across social networks. We'd like to run a contest for that.

I cannot come up with a good idea on the contest score formula that satisfies all of the following requirements:

  1. There should be no noticeable difference between those who started spreading the world in the first month and those who did in the last month. The contest is 3 months long and we don't want to discourage people from participating if they found out late.

  2. All data for the score formula must be retrievable in the Discourse database.

  3. Friends of the contest participants who are link-clickers should be discouraged by the formula, i.e. not taken into account. This could be done by excluding stats with short session time.

P.S. We also run a Google Analytics account, but I don't think I can find the needed figures there.

Thanks for your ideas!
