Injecting custom behaviour and UI

@micpringle wrote:

Hello!

I have set up an instance of Discourse, which uses our custom SSO provider. Everything works great, but I'd like to alter some of the standard behaviour and UI to provide a richer user experience, and was hoping I could get some guidance on where to being, and whether or not I can achieve what I'm looking for using a plugin rather than having to fork Discourse.

First up, I'd like to add a link to this screen:

somewhere in the vast empty space on the right that redirects a user to our SSO user profile editing page, since that's the only place where they can edit such things as username, name, email etc.

Secondly, I'd like to either remove the refresh button, or completely suppress the following pop up:

When you log out on our Discourse instance it also logs you out on our SSO provider and then redirects to the home page (via some custom Rack middleware), so this popup is only visible for a very short time, and certainly not long enough for anyone to click the refresh button.

Any help or guidance on these two issues would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

-Mic

Some issues with staged users and their (in)ability to visit topics

@Sander78 wrote:

Imagine an unknown user mailing to a category that has restricted access. One of the known users reply there, so the unknown user gets a notification by mail.

In that mail there is the line that says Visit Topic or reply to this email to respond. But when visiting that topic, two things can happen:

  1. the forum is closed and the new user need to login anyway
  2. the forum is not closed, but the user has no access to the category, because he's not in that group

For point 1, the new user should get some assistance to create a password. It's totally not clear what to to there.

For point 2, maybe the user shouldn't have the option to visit the topic at all.

Simplest solution: have staged users get custom copy in their mail notifications. No visit this topic, just reply by mail.

The staged user was created by sending a mail to a secured category, in case that makes any difference.

Themes for Discourse?

Is there a way to require access codes on sign-up or password-protect categories?

I've set up Discourse and don't see an option to require an access-code on sign-up, perhaps through a plugin? Or can I password-protect categories? Basically I want to make a private Discourse site where I don't have to approve each and every user. I suppose I could try using .htaccess...

Edit: Using a .htaccess on Document Root gives an internal server configuration error, so that's a no-go it seems.

Hi there,

Apologies for the stupid question, but the hyperlink icon seems to be missing when I try to post a reply to a thread on my mobile device (iPhone 6S). Is this the case or am I missing something?

Many thanks,

Discourse Username in Embedded Comments

@micpringle wrote:

Hi,

I've been trying to get the embedded Discourse comments to work with multiple users, via the discourseUserName field that's part of embed.js.

The generated embedding URL seems to be correct (creating the discourse_username param), but I don't think this is being passed correctly in the controller.

If I understand this correctly, then the following line triggers the job that will extract the content from the website:

Notice that there is no mention of the discourse_username. However the RetrieveTopic job expects it to be passed as an argument named author_username:

Am I correct in this analysis? Has anybody ever had non-RSS-poll username embedding working?

Thanks for your help.

Ambiguous error text when inviting a user already invited

Anyone agree that this error message is ambiguous? (e.g., When inviting a user ID who that had already been invited to the topic.)

Validation failed: Topic has already been taken

Perhaps something like this?

Sorry, that user has already been invited. You may only invite a user to a topic once.

(A different question is whether or not it's a good idea to limit 1 invitation per user... in my use case, I needed them to come back to the topic to participate again.)

Img class and Group name length

@ccdw wrote:

Hi, I'd like to request a couple of small changes to the standard install.

  1. Could we possibly whitelist the class attribute for the image tag? This would allow float to be added. I can currently target images with CSS using the title or alt attribute, but it's messy.

  2. And I was going to request that the minimum length for group names be reduced to 3, but I've noticed that this has recently been changed and 3 is now possible. Cool! The BBC will be pleased.

Thank you.

After updating to very latest (from earlier today) i noticed some failures on the admin dashboard:

Jobs::UserEmail
{"type"=>"digest", "user_id"=>1610, "current_site_id"=>"default"}
Jobs::HandledExceptionWrapper: Wrapped ActionView::Template::Error: no implicit conversion of nil into String

Is this a recent fix? They seem to slowly disapear but i don't know if that' solved or just discarded.

Minimal Version of Discourse for (Jekyll) Blogs - Any Examples?

@themoment wrote:

I'm trying to find a minimal discussion platform to use for my Jekyll blog and considering Discourse as an option.

Is there a minimal version of Discourse for personal blogs? So far the only post I saw on this was this one. But I couldn't find a demo of it.

The current problems I have:

  • The forum (in the demos I could find) repost the entire blog posts, making it bloated for people who already read it and just wanted to comment and join the discussion.
  • The top comments are embedded into the posts, which I like. But in order to join the discussion, you are taken to another page (which is fine) just that there is no easy way of getting back and the goal of a blog, in my opinion, is to keep people from entirely leaving the site.
  • What if instead of having "suggested topics" on the bottom, there was an easy way for people to go back to blog (for example, relevant articles they can read), rather than staying in the forum. As activity in the forum is second in importance to the blog.

Does it seem strange to anyone that that when you compose a new Message to a user (or group), that the first text field highlighted is the subject rather than the recipient? (Recipient is the top field.)

This has confused a couple of our users now in field tests.

Discourse Feature Voting

$

@joebuhlig wrote:

This plugin is the result of the spec put together by @erlend_sh here:

It gives you the ability to vote on topics in a specified category. There is a new setting on the category to enable this:

Once enabled, the topics in that category can be voted on with the count of votes added next to the topic title.

The vote count is also included next to the title when scrolled.

To make it easier to see vote counts from a topic list, the vote count is also added under the topic titles.

Here are the views you'll see given different states of the user and topic:

A few points about the backend:

  1. The number or active votes is configurable and defaults to 10.
  2. If the topic is closed or archived, the votes are released to the users and can be applied to other topics but the vote count on the topic remains.
  3. If a topic is re-opened or unarchived, the votes are reclaimed and applied back to the users active vote count.
  4. If a topic reclaims the votes of a user and they go over their limit, they simply need to wait until topics are closed or archived to allow them to vote again.
  5. [MERGED] This plugin requires a DiscourseEvent in a PR that is currently in the queue. The vote release and reclaim mechanisms won't work without it.

You can find the repo here:

https://github.com/joebuhlig/discourse-feature-voting

A couple things I'm interested in as next steps:

  1. Create a section for the user to see their active and archived votes.
  2. Allow moderators/staff/admins to see who has voted on a topic.

Hashtags for categories ...and not tags?

$

@AstonJ wrote:

Has this only just been added? :blush:

When typing a post and adding a hashtag a list of categories come up, which when clicked on get inserted as a link.

I think it's great to add short cuts like this, but categories are not hashtags, and most people would expect to see tags (the closest thing to hashtags Discourse has).

I wonder if anyone else thinks it would be a good idea to use a single # for tags, and two for categories? That would be pretty awesome :sunglasses:
