How to search for posts within a timeframe

@sam wrote:

Sometimes you may want to scope searches to a subset or range of dates. Our search interface supports before and after search clauses. They accept a full date, name of month or day of week.

Examples:

  • before:june hashtag - Posts with the search term hashtag posted before last June

  • before:2014 category:bug order:latest - Posts in the bug category created prior to 2014

  • after:friday broken - Posts created after last Friday with the word broken in them

  • after:2016-01-12 before:2016-01-20 happy - Posts created after 12th of Jan 2016 and before 20th of Jan 2016 with the word happy

  • after:june before:july in:first composer - Searches the first post in topic created from last June for the word composer

  • after:10 before:8 thing - Posts containing the word thing that were posted between 8 and 10 days ago.

All dates are in UTC, we always use beginning of day UTC as the start time for any period.

Note: we deprecated min_age and max_age clauses which were causing confusion. The new filter applies to created_at date of posts, not to the date a topic is created. If you need to filter on topic creation use in:first

Per-category Terms of Service

I am setting up a forum with a somewhat unusual use case - a user can be invited to a access a category, which would otherwise be locked to him and in case the user is interested, he will have to accept terms of conditions specific for the given group that is being unlocked to him.

How should I handle this in Discourse?

Thanks,

How to install the tagging plugin in a Vagrant environment

I want to install the tagging plugin in a Vagrant environment.

I tried to the following:

cd plugins
git clone https://github.com/discourse/discourse-tagging.git
cd ..
bundle install
bundle exec rake db:migrate

It appears to install correctly:

But although I can see the tagging preferences under Admin / Plugins, I don't have the ability to tag topics on the front-end of the site. I've enabled tagging and the user I was testing with has required trust to create new tags.

Ideas?

P.S. My production environment uses docker. But I'm currently importing content from another forum and have been advised to do so locally, in a Vagrant environment.

API: Getting all posts in a topic

I'm working on a script that will evaluate participation in a discussion and produce a number based on how many messages they wrote, likes, and replies and such that will become students' grade for "participating" in a discussion.

/t/blah/TOPIC_ID.json returns only 20 posts. Is there a way to get all of them, or will I need to do a request for all of them?

I looked a little at what gets passed to poll, but it wasn't immediately apparent that I could somehow pass it something like a range or number of posts that I wanted.

Introducing the Staff Notes Plugin

@eviltrout wrote:

I'd like to introduce the official discourse-staff-notes plugin. The idea here is that sometimes staff members want to share notes about a particular user to help with moderation or support duties.

You can add a Staff Note to any user by using the admin menu on one of their posts:

The interface is displayed in a modal (which is also accessible from the user's profile page). You can add as many notes as you need to, complete with markdown support:

If a user has a staff note, whenever they post you'll see a little notes icon. Clicking it will bring up the notes:

That's pretty much all there is to it! I'd love to hear feedback from people who install and try it out. I should note that it currently requires the tests-passed branch of discourse to work, although within a week or so it should work with the latest beta.

Changing a user's email address via api

@paully21 wrote:

We have a section on our website that allows users to manage their Discourse account preferences. Most of our users only use Discourse as a sort of mailing list, so we made it easy for them to manage that activity within their website account.

I need to be able to modify the user's email address via an api call. We do all sorts of stuff with api calls now, but I can't figure out how to change the email address.

I'm guessing I need the update action of the UsersEmailController (https://github.com/discourse/discourse/blob/master/app/controllers/users_email_controller.rb) but I don't know how to reach that endpoint.

Does anyone know the URL of the endpoint to change a user's email address (using the api key and api username method)?

Thanks!

Hosting migration from LAMP, SMF, Wordpress advice/recs

I've been running a sports website for years that for the past six or so has run Wordpress, SMF and a couple of simple database apps that list rosters and prospects - simple lookups with an admin interface.

I'm the definition of "knows just enough to be dangerous". SSH and some linux commands don't trouble me, things like "docker" and "droplet" cause me to freeze up a little.

With that shallow skill set, I've been hacked repeatedly - most significantly through a Plesk hole, almost as bad through an SMF hole, and lately, I assume, by a Wordpress plugin hole.

I like Discourse a lot (even though it will be a big UX transition for my members). I like the idea of offering social login/signup so people can trust their credentials with someone other than me.

I have peaked at 260 simultaneous users, but the normal peak usage is 100 at a time. I have used about 1GB of disk all in (most of it MySQL databases), and I need 10GB of bandwidth/month.

I'm paying about $1,000/year for my server, and my community can raise that. I'd love to host here (and can cover the extra $$), but I need to run the PHP/MySQL apps and I need Wordpress or an alternative. I'd love to bring my SMF forum into the new Discourse forum, but I've been unable to achieve that on an OS X local installation of Discourse ...

I'd be interested in some expert advice/suggestions about how a mostly amateur should manage this transition. I'd consider eliminating Wordpress - the forum is the nucleus of the site and Wordpress is almost a wrapper - but I have to keep the PHP/MySQL apps.

Thanks in advance...

Badge Discussion: Like Ratios + Spending Likes

$

@eviltrout wrote:

In Discourse 1.5 we'd like to add a couple of badges around liking. They might be a little complicated so I figured I'd post this topic to get some feedback!

Like Ratios

The idea here is if you receive a certain ratio of posts : likes you will receive a badge. The tricky thing here is how to figure out what that ratio should be.

Some users, in particular the Discourse core members on this forum, receive quite a few more likes than others. (Some people in particular with 200k twitter followers can tweet a link to a post and guarantee a metric boatload of likes!)

It has been suggested that instead of likes_count / posts_count we instead track posts_with_at_least_one_like_count / posts_count for a user. Apologies for the long variable name but you get the idea.

Even then, how would we determine what a good ratio is? One thing I've done in the past that might work is used a geometric mean across all users and if your ratio is higher than the mean, award the badge.

Spending Likes

I'm not going to name any names, but some users just have a lot of :heart: to give :slight_smile:

As a way to encourage likes, we're considering adding a badge that will be awarded to a user who spends all their available likes in a day. In other words, once they've hit the rate limit for max_likes_per_day.

This one might be quite hard to achieve as the default is currently 50, and higher trust levels can have a multiplier to make it even higher.

What are your thoughts on the new badges? Any suggestions for how they should be implemented simply and effectively?

How 2 websites can use one forum?

@ultras wrote:

Hello folks! Is there a way that 2 Websites can use 1 discourse forum so that forum is on subdomain of first website and 2nd website loads only to specific category of the forum. So for example 1st website is about all kinds of chocolates and forum will be hosted on that domain subdomain while second website is only about dark chocolate so second website would somehow load directly dark chocolate category. Second website can have subdomain that links directly to dark chocolate category or have it linked as example.com/forum
Thanks

Where to put Javascript that will load after the DOM?

@stevenpslade wrote:

Hola,

I have this code:

$('#topic-title .badge-wrapper').first().text();

That I would like to put into a variable after the page has loaded. In the Discourse UI, you cannot put Javascript in the Footer and if you place it in the header or body under customize, it will not work because the DOM has not loaded.

I cannot use document.ready because it is for a google adwords param that will not work inside that.

So, where to put Javascript that will run after the DOM has loaded in Discourse?

Supress list markdown with number and dot

@coubeatczech wrote:

I'm running a discourse instance with czech users. Unlike in english speaking world, we use the dot . symbol between after month and day in dates, not slash /. When user is writing 8. 1. 2001, she means a date, but the discourse will interpret it as a item of a list.

See - I'm trying to write 8. 1. 2011:

  1. 2011

Is there a way, how to supress this behaviour of markdown? Making the users to learn this and do some workaround is not optimal approach :expressionless:

Sorting topics by creation date

I've noticed this forum has links to Bugs and Features in top navigation which are topics sorted by op_likes.

Would it be possible to sort topics by creation date instead? I can see there is created_at attribute in JSON output but when I try https://meta.discourse.org/category/feature?order=created_at, topics are not sorted by creation date. Would this be possible?

One category on my forum would be more suitable to sort by "created_at" attribute. That's why I'm interested in this.

Hey,

I'm sorry I'm not technical and I'm stuck.

Context: I want to Discourse to enable my networking group to talk to each other offline in a nice private environment.

Requirements: I need Discourse to:
1. Ask people to fill in their Organisation and Job Title when they first accept the invite (I'm created the custom fields)
2. Show these fields on a user's profile page
3. In a perfect world, when they post a comment, it'd appear somewhere on their post.

Can you help me please?

Thanks,
Nigel

Not sure if a bug or something strange on my instance, but i can't test on try.discourse.org because it requires be staff member.

Steps to reproduce:

  • Bookmark a post in a topic.
  • An admin moves that post into a new or existing topic.
