Disk gets full after every few weeks

Hi,
My little discourse forum (with 10 GB diskspace) usually takes around 4 GB space + i have a 2 GB swap space.

After every few weeks, the disk gets full and the site hence crashes. I'm not sure if something makes the logs full, or some other reason.
I currently run ./launcher cleanup and it cleans a few GBs, and makes things back to normal. Is this happening to everyone, or it is just me?

Any suggestions?
Thanks

Users keep replying to notification emails

@ChrisBeach wrote:

I'm finding my forum users keep replying to notification emails. The problem is that I haven't set up the reply-by-email feature, so all the replies are coming to me instead of the intended recipient

I think users are being confused because the "from" name on the notification email is the person that wrote the post on the forum. So the person receiving the notification assumes they can reply to that person by replying to the email.

It would help if, when email replying is disabled, the "from" name in notification emails should be the site name, rather than the author of the post.

Have people found any good ways around this issue

"invalid command \n" maybe string escaping problem? or different EOL?

Deep Linking to Headings (Anchors)

@eviltrout wrote:

One new feature in Discourse I'm working on is the ability to link directly to an anchor in a post.

Unfortunately there is no standard markdown way of creating a heading with an anchor, so you have to use regular HTML for now. Simply create a heading like so:

<h3 id='link-to-me'>Link to me</h3>

And then any time you link to the post, you can add #link-to-me in the URL and it'll jump directly to that spot once it loads. Here's a demo:

Before the Image

Link to before the image

Going forward, we might want to consider auto generating ids for heading tags. Github's markdown engine does this. For example, <h3>test</h3> automatically becomes <h3 id='test'>test</h3> so you don't have to worry about adding the id yourself.

There are downsides to this approach if we do it - in particular it's difficult to handle headings with the same name. There is more detail here if you are interested in reading more.

Creating WP native comments

@jamesmarkcook wrote:

Has anyone worked on creating native wordpress comments from Discourse posts instead of just displaying Discourse posts separately?

The reason I ask is because my theme (and I'm sure others) displays the comment count below the post image and title and it would be good to populate this with accurate data.

It would also make styling easier and make the Wordpress plugin compatible with any theme from a design point of view.

I'm assuming there is a good reason that the plugin works the way it does, someone please enlighten me! :slight_smile:

Has anyone else encountered this issue? I recently upgraded to 1.6 but the problem didn't appear till days after that

Configure time of the Daily Summary

@pelcami wrote:

Does anyone know if it is possible, in v1.6.0.beta11 +89, to configure a time the Daily Summary is sent out?

I've read some replies from @jomaxro and @codinghorror considering setting a default time for the Daily Summary, but see that discussion closed on May 31st. I haven't seen any more thought about this, but think this feature would be very useful to admins wishing to transition a Mailman news-list style service to Discourse.

I've spent a few weeks modifying Discourse to make it more like our current Mailman service. It comes pretty close - but knowing when the Daily Summary goes out (giving the end-user a deadline for new topics to be submitted) would enhance our ability to use it as a news-list.

WP and Discourse not in sync using SSO

@jamesmarkcook wrote:

I've been playing around with the WP plugin and SSO this evening but it's not as great as I'd hoped. I'm hoping I'm doing something wrong as there are a few things I've noticed which are less than ideal.

  1. When I log out of Discourse, it redirects me to Wordpress where I am still logged in
  2. If I log out of Wordpress, my Discourse account stays logged in until I click Log out.
  3. Human verification check appears to be ignored when accessing Wordpress login page from Discourse Login link. (However I've not investigated this and it may be an issue with my Wordpress setup)
  4. If I log in on Wordpress and click a link to Discourse, I still have to click the 'Login' button on Discourse to be logged in (unless I click a link with session/sso at the end, obviously). For me, Discourse should recognise I'm logged in automatically.

From my understanding the two should stay in sync. This doesn't appear to be happening. Has anyone else encountered these issues?

This post appears to be talking about a similar thing, albeit it in a custom implementation of SSO, not the WP plugin. It's my assumption that these issues would have been ironed out by now, but maybe not?

Create new topic via SQL

@wil93 wrote:

Hi, I'm trying to create a new topic via SQL, I am basically issuing a INSERT query inside the topics table and then some INSERT queries inside the posts table.

I noticed however that the reply count of the topic (the one beside the view count and the last activity) is stuck to -1. The schema of the topics table says that reply_count defaults to 0, and it is indeed 0, and I have some other topics (created in the usual manner) that have 0 replies, but in the web interface I see -1 for the topic created via SQL.

Even if I increase the reply_count, it stays -1.

What am I missing?

Some recommendations for difficult moderator situations

$

@codinghorror wrote:

I'm in the process of coming up with some basic recommendations for Discourse owners and moderators, on how to make challenging moderator decisions in a sustainable, community friendly way.

Here's what I have so far:

  1. Share moderation duties with multiple people. Having a single focal point for all mod decisions is fatiguing and can lead to undue flashpoints, and personal attacks. If there's only one person in charge, is the forum "you"? What if you're tired, or cranky, or in a bad place? That's a dangerous path to be on.

  2. Discuss bans, but not too much, and only in the right place. Please don't celebrate bans or constantly bring them up, and definitely don't clutter unrelated topics with ban conversation. Keep ban discussion in the "forum feedback" category.

  3. Be decisive with bans. Certainly give people a chance in case they made a mistake, but then cleanly, decisively ban them. It is not your job to reform this person. You are not obligated to let them try over and over. You can keep the door open by advising them to email you in 6 months or a year if they want to try again. But the impetus to recognize the problem, apologize, and ask politely to try again -- that is on them.

  4. Keep heated moderation talk in private. If things are getting heated, remove that part from the public topic, into a private group message. Maybe even take it offline if needed, to email or voice. At minimum move it to the "forum feedback" category so other topics aren't cluttered with off-topic moderation stuff.

  5. Take a break. Sometimes people just need to walk away for a while and take a break from the discussion. A short closure of a contentious topic, or a day suspension, might be in order. Avoid making hasty decisions in the heat of the moment, and discourage others from doing so as well.

Minor editor improvements

$

@barryvan wrote:

There's been some more talk recently about a WYSIWYG editor. I believe, however, that many of the issues faced by users of the editor could be mitigated with just a few small wins.

Automatic list management

When I've started a list, and press enter, automatically insert the next list marker for me. So if I type

* foo bar baz▂ enter

...then my editor should show:

* foo bar baz
* ▂

Similar functionality should be included for numbered lists.

This is available in JIRA's plain-text editor, and I feel that it makes a huge difference when you're putting together lists.

Make formatting options more discoverable

There's a whole slew of formatting that's available within the editor -- and the excellent markdown tutorial which new users are linked to helps to explain all of this. Unfortunately, though, many users don't try this out -- and for those who do, they won't remember everything.

To that end, I would suggest that either a "Format" drop-down be included in the editor toolbar, which can include headings, preformatted text, and quotes, or that a "help" option be provided alongside the editor -- perhaps optionally replacing the preview. JIRA simply includes a small "help" button alongside the preview toggle, which opens a separate page with documentation.

Could it possibly be a theme issue?
