Install Discourse as subfolder within Wordpress website?

@Philipp wrote:

Hi!
I am currently running a Wordpress website with a forum based on bbpress.
I am thinking about migrating to Discourse.
Currently my forum is integrated seemlessly. Its domain is www.mydomain.com/forum

So far all Discourse installations I've seen are available under an own subdomain such as meta.discourse.org
I wonder if it's possible to install discourse and set it's root to www.mydomain.com/forum
Has anyone tried this?

Thanks, Philipp

I updated my installation from 1.5.4 to 1.6.4, but I cannot login or reset the admin password. Here is portion of the log from production.log:

Reset password:

Started POST "/session/forgot_password" for 31.171.219.125 at 2016-10-01 19:03:56 +0000
Processing by SessionController#forgot_password as */*
  Parameters: {"login"=>"NuLL3rr0r"}
Completed 422 Unprocessable Entity in 4ms (Views: 0.2ms | ActiveRecord: 0.0ms)

Login:

Started POST "/session" for 31.171.219.125 at 2016-10-01 19:19:07 +0000
Processing by SessionController#create as */*
  Parameters: {"login"=>"NuLL3rr0r", "password"=>"[FILTERED]"}
Completed 200 OK in 9ms (Views: 0.3ms | ActiveRecord: 2.9ms)

I even tried running this from terminal:

$ RAILS_ENV=production bundle exec rake admin:create

When I enter the admin email the first time, it creates a new user (which means either the user does not exists anymore or Discourse cannot find it). The second time it asks if I want to rest the password. In any case when I login using this new user and password it says:

Incorrect username, email or password

I also checked my mail server logs but Discourse never attempts a connection to the mail server.

Thanks for your help.

Official Discourse Advertising Plugin not showing adsense ads

I have Discourse setup locally to test and learn, and I've been trying to get Official Discourse Advertising Plugin working. The problem is that adding Google Adsense ads will not appear. I tried Amazon ads and it works ok.

Any ideas, what could be happening? I'm running Discourse v1.6.4 +1 and the version 1.0.2 of Official Discourse Advertising Plugin.

FYI: The ad is good and in working conditions. Also, I work designing websites locally on my computer and I never had issues with Adsense loading ads even though it's not a server on the internet.

Also, does anyone here has a Discourse forum currently running with Adsense? I would like to check that it actually works. Thanks,

Particles.js in discourse background

Have started playing around with particles.js, managed to get it working on a little landing page (ethhub.io) and now I'm wanting to branch out and try it on a discourse install. Wondering how much of this I could do from the customise section of the admin panel and where in my discourse install would be a good place to put the .js files?

Slight_smile vs slightly_smiling emoji

@meglio wrote:

Not sure when it happened for the first time, but I noticed just now that :slightly_smiling: emoji stopped working in our Discourse instance - :slight_smile: works instead.

Old emojies now show like this all around the topics:

If an emoji was removed/replaced in Discourse, shouldn't it be converted in all messages automatically?

Or is there another way how to get to such a state? And more importantly, how do I fix it for all topics at once?

Scheduled invites - plugin idea

@meglio wrote:

Just like with scheduling mailing lists in the words of mail lists, I'd like to create multiple "invite schedules" and assign them to users.

For instance, in our goat farmers community we have 2 veterinaries. The second one just came now and is very active.

Every time I recall a good topic and invite her to participate in the discussion, she takes over with pleasure. So I came up with the idea that I'd like to build a list and schedule invites, .e.g invite her to some topic once every 2 days. I'd setup it once for a few weeks and get back to my other duties.

Inviting people to discussions relevant to them manually and regularly has become time consuming now that we have 800 members. Still, we have to do it because inviting works so great that it allows us to reanimate old topics with great success and sometime eventually make them appear in google top10 by some specific keywords.

Anyone else would use such a feature?

P.S. To me it looks like plugin area.

Dedicate a forum to act as "hacker news" daily rating

Hey guys,

I'm wondering if someone has been working or thinking about writing a plugin that allows say a dedicated forum to work as a rating system.

It should be able to do the hacker news / product hunt thing, ie:

  1. Reset top rated posted daily
  2. Allow people to vote
  3. Identify hot topic and push them upper
  4. Display comments inside stories.

Unable to access after installation

I've followed the instructions at https://github.com/discourse/discourse/blob/master/docs/INSTALL-cloud.md to the letter, have everything set up on Digital Ocean, everything seems to be running fine, however actually accessing my installation doesn't seem to work, my browser is indicating the connection was refused.

When I stop the application and run e.g. python3 -m http.server 80, I can access the service just fine, so I don't think it's a firewall issue. I also changed app.yml to expose to port 8080, and I got an nginx 'welcome' page. Changing app.yml back and doing a rebuild (which takes forever) brings back the "This site can’t be reached" error.

I'm not sure what's going on. Could anyone help me? Here's the output of some commands / stuff I've looked into:

Import from phpbb, using S3 storage

@David_Taylor wrote:

I've run an import from a reasonably large (~150k posts) phpBB forum, and enabled S3 uploads before doing this. However, none of the images/attachments are working. They seem to have appeared in the S3 bucket, but they're under the "tombstone" folder, rather than the "original" folder.

I wonder if this is because I hadn't enabled public read access to the S3 bucket during the import.

Is there a rake task, or similar, which I can run to fix the files, or do I need to delete everything and run the importer again for another 6 hours?

and in topics with no replies the last post, is topics.

Unlist vs Archive

@needhelp wrote:

Hi All,

a few questions if I may

1) does the UNLIST feature only unlist a post or topic from the forum but anyone with the URL can still access the posts or topic? so Unlisting a post or topic will not stop google from crawling that topic?

2) What does Archive do? What is the difference between UNLIST and ARCHIVE?

3) Is there an option to complete HIDE a post or topic from public view and also from google crawl so that by logging in as ADMIN is the only way to see a post or topic?

There are so many features and options with Discourse, I have been testing and experimenting for many hours today and still barely scratch the surface, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Improvements for posts awaiting approval

@pmusaraj wrote:

When using the "approve unless TLx" setting, I find that the /queued-posts and the approval process in general are a little basic. I would like to propose a few improvements:

  1. allow moderators to PM the poster from the /queued-posts screen
  2. when the post is a new topic, allow moderators/admins/poster to see the post in its own draft page and make edits (currently posters can't edit what they have submitted)
  3. when the post is a new topic, allow staff to respond to the post or leave staff notes, visible by other staff and the poster (these could be regular posts, that can then be deleted all at once, ideally, should the post get approved)
  4. create a drafts page for the poster

This would be a very nice workflow for queued posts, IMO.
