Mail address per category

@dosch wrote:

Is it possible to set up different mail addresses for categories?

The use case is as follows:

  • I publish an email address somewhere publicly.
  • People who mail this, actually mail the forum.
  • These people don't need an account on discourse to post (they do not even need to know that, by mailing they are actually posting on a forum)
  • The category on the forum serves as the 'inbox' for this email address.
  • Replying to the post on the forum in the category, send a reply to the original emailer.

Or am I now making Discourse into some Frankenstein monster? :wink:

Selective backups and restores

While looking at the backup and restore options, it seems that it is an all or nothing type scheme. Is there a way to choose the components backed up/restored? Currently, only files can be exempted but it would be handy to be able to backup/restore just the forum content and exclude the settings and other configs. This would have the added benefit of being able to migrate just the content more easily. Or am I just missing something?

Can't make user admin, reverts when logging in

Hello everyone!

I'm trying to make a user an admin, I have tried going to admin/users/ and clicking on the Grant Admin and Grant Moderator buttons. If I go back to my user list, I can see that the user was granted those rights. However, as soon as the user logs in, the access is automatically revoked and reverts back to a regular user. I have also tried logging in via SSH and granting admin access to the user manually, butI get the same result where the user logs in and is reverted back to regular user rights...

What is going on here?

Custom user fields show on Activity, but not Summary page

$

@pfaffman wrote:

Here's what the settings for a custom user field look like:

If you click a user's avatar on a post, you get the user card. That works as expected, but if you click the avatar on the user card, you get to /users/USER/summary. The summary page does not have the Custom field on it, but it's the activity page that has the user bio and custom fields.

What would I expect

I think I'd expect that the BIO, location, URL, custom user fields and whatnot be displayed on the Summary, not activity page. If somehow it makes more sense that it be on the activity page, then I'd expect that the first user page I get to be the one that has the custom fields and whatnot on it (so point people first to the activity page that has the full user information on it).

Dealing with multiple sub-communities on discourse

@Jason_Morris wrote:

I apologize in advance if my searches missed something on-point.

I'm running a site that provides access to private conversations on the basis of real-world membership in other organizations. People not in the real-world organization should not be able to see the posts in the related category. But people can be member of more than one of those organizations, and so they need to be given access to more than one category.

All of that can be accomplished with groups, and category permissions.

The problem is that making the categories private seems to disable the "invite user by email" functionality.

That in and of itself is not a huge problem. But what I want is to maintain these private categories, and also allow the users to send invites.

What I'm planning to do as a workaround is create a "New User" category which is public to all logged-in users, and create a topic there that users with TL2 or higher can use to "invite by email" to the site, after which the new user will be assigned to the right category. But this feels SUPER kludgy.

Edit: After trying this, and testing it with a non-staff TL2 account, the invite interface still only refers to username, and attempts to use email addresses result in an error. I feel like I don't understand the permissions behind user invites at all.

Will that strategy work (edit: evidently not?), is there something better I could be doing?

Would an "invite user to site by email" feature be a good idea?

Would an "invite user to private category by email" feature be a good idea?

I suppose I could make every real-world organization a sub-domain and run it multi-site, but yuck from an admin perspective, and it forces the user to use more than one site if they are in more than one real-world organization.

Thanks in advance. Appreciate the help.

Needs tips on Private Message

@sjmscott wrote:

I am transitioning my community away from Yahoo Groups and some of my community has this concern:

When you receive a message from yahoo groups, you can reply to just the individual user or to everyone in the group.

In discourse you don't have access (that I know of) to reveal user emails. What is the most efficient way to send an PM in response to a post? For example, you might have an off topic response that you want to communicate directly to a poster.

Are there any shortcuts, buttons, or tricks that I might be missing?

Can you generate a private message from a thread?

I'm researching a solution to run Discourse and Wordpress on the same server. I have a forum and a blog, both generate on average 2M page views / month. The blog will be in the url / blog.

Is Plesk Onyx a good solution to run the 2 on the same server with Ubuntu?

Our atual server is 2 x 2.4GHz Hexa-Core E5-2620 v3 Haswell Xeon 64GB RAM and with PHPBB and Wordpress, it reaches 100% of the processing capacity and sometimes we need to restart. Will a server like this be able to handle the demand?

Thanks in advance.

Cap on number of invites?

@yvonnebrill wrote:

Is there a cap on the number of invites a user can send out?

Over the last couple of weeks I've sent out a large number of invites to join our Community - we're using our Community to host a private category for staff who are part of a programme we're running in our organisation. Lots of the staff on the programme aren't existing Community members and so in order to grant them access to the group I've had to send out invites and grant them access to the group at this point.

I've currently got 400 pending invites (and 450 redeemed) but have noticed that when I try to send further invites they are not showing in the list. Is 400 the max number of pending invites that the system can have? Or is there a cap on how many invites 1 user can send?

I'm writing an Ansible playbook to deploy discourse automatically. The problem is that I would like to automate the configuration that is done in the web browser after the installation. I can't find any documentation on how to do this, is it possible?

Raw instead of cooked for topic responses

@adam_beers wrote:

Is there a way to get the raw as well as the cooked data inside a topic request for the replies? Currently, if you do a example.com/t/115.json, you get the topic and the post_stream (also other items I'm not interested with here). The post_stream contains only the cooked item. I would like the raw item as well. Currently, if I wanted to see the raw, I would have to do a query for each and every post in the post_stream individually. Seems pretty trivial to include the raw as well since it is in the actual post, but I'm not sure.

Web update stuck at 50% since about 60 min

I started a web update on our live site about an hour ago. It reached just less than 50% without any error messages, then as it changed from Compressing: locales to the first Compressing: application it just stopped.

My normal procedure is to run the updates on my sandbox, and see if they do anything odd, or generate error messages, then on the live site I wait until the daily backup has run, check that there is enough disk space, then initiate the web update while there aren't many users online.

The web site is up, mails are going out, performance seems fine (So I don't think we're swapping, otherwise I'd see timeouts, right?).

What should I do, reset the web update and wait until someone with SSH access can do an app rebuild, or just leave it zombied until they can have a look at free?

EDIT: Going from v1.8.0.beta7 +77 (6ebddc4) to 9f299b6
