How difficult would it be to make the Discourse UI more like Flarum?

@subtenko wrote:

Scale of 1-10 how difficult would it be? Hopefully this question doesn’t peeve anyone but Im torn between the two. Flarum has a really clean interface:

  1. Topic list is centered with no lines in between, yet its still easy to read.
  2. Search bar is all in the same sticky header and not a ‘nook’
  3. Category markers look better, not just a 4x4 square.

Hmm… thats about it I think… Does this make sense? Sorry if this is posted to the wrong section.

Sidenote info: Im currently testing out both software even though having a hard time putting discourse on the same server vs my other 1 click install server. At least I have this working because for some reason I get a blank page when finalizing the flarum install. Really if Discourse had the same Flarum UI and features discourse currently has it be a much easier pick :smiley:

Vimeo onebox player disappearing after app rebuild

@FauxTony wrote:

Hey team, first time poster long time reading.

We have some Vimeo video content in several topics where we used onebox to display the Video Player. It was working like a charm but now it seems when we rebuild the app, the video won’t load correctly.

Then if we click edit on the post and save without actually changing anything, the video renders correctly again.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Add an option to split personal messages

@sam wrote:

Currently the “Split Topic” admin action is all about splitting public topics, you select a category there and the expectation is that a new public or secure topic is created.

We need a way of also splitting large personal messages.

  • Add an admin wrench option on messages for “Split Message”
  • UI not to show category selector
  • UI to be explicit about who will be included in new private message.

Use case:

  • A PM has 120 messages
  • Admin selects 20 of them
  • Admin clicks “Split Message”
  • UX shows “Bob, Bill, Team …” will be included in new message
  • (phase 2) … allow cleaning up the list in the split UI
  • Admin gives the new message a new title
  • Admin splits
  • Message was split is included in original PM

Whats the css class to use to change the background color for the section under/around the user avatar (red section below).

The stuff I tried all either colored only the brown section as in the image above, or colored the section marked but also colored some additional space to the right that’s white in the screenshot above.

Thanks.

We use tags and are wondering how we can see which tags our members have chosen to follow (whether “watching”, “following”, etc.) specific tags?

We are looking to bulk delete some tags but first want to understand how many of our users are potentially following / care about each tag.

Thanks for your insight!

Request: separate form messages for off-topic vs guidelines-based flaggings

@wolftune wrote:

Continuing the discussion from A little friendlier hidden post message?:

There’s lots of reasons why off-topic is distinct from other guideline violations. After all, Discourse development resulted in the idea of separating them already.

It would really make sense to have two different system messages overall instead of the simple one-line difference in the same overall message. Besides making it possible to make the default messages similar, this would allow better customization of these quite-different flagging scenarios.

workaround?

I suppose a workaround is to remove most of the system message and instead put long messages in the reasons line (although I suspect that won’t accept paragraphs and such, or at least is less amenable to that.

Integrate discourse authentication with external service which is token base authentication

I want to integrate discourse authentication with my service but I have some issue.

At first My web service is Single Page Application and authentication is token base.

Flow of register is Facebook auth through Firebase auth then once user is created in my server, user interact with service by token issued from my service.

To my understand SSO of Discourse access session information in the cookie from subdomain so token base authentication system can’t use SSO easily right?

So I tried to oauth2 but when user from discourse try to request authentication, my service couldn’t judge user is correct or not because my service and firbase auth doesn’t have any credential information of user except token.

The idea which I’ve only came out is extending discourse for embedding iframe to get access localstorage from subdomain…

Are there good ideas or good plugins to do like above?

Tested with Firefox on safe mode / no addons. Win 7. FF 59.0.1 (64-bit). Have noticed this for the past month or so. User is presented with a blank/white screen on all forum pages. Apparently this effects all discourse sites for users that have

dom.webnotifications.enabled = false

in about.config. This is not an uncommon setting, it would be great if this could be fixed so that having notifications disabled won’t render block the entire site.

Hi, this is follow up my previous question from Copy-Paste Locked Badge Query (SQL) For More Than Champion or Invitation

So, I want to give a badge to a member who has successful invited 25 people.
Just like the existing badge, the Campaigner (3 people) or Champion (5 people).
The reward is only a badge without raising the Trust Level.

The concept is similar with the SQL Badge Query in “A badge for 10 accepted answers” Discourse Solved (Accepted answer plugin) Only need changes the number.

I have see this "Promoter" Badge broken? and this discourse/badge_queries.rb at master · discourse/discourse · GitHub , but still afraid and confuse to found the correct sql.
Maybe someone can help me.
Thank you very much.

RSS Observations

@Biscuit wrote:

I love that .rss and .json extensions can be added to some Discourse URLs to turn the page into a RSS news feed or json data.

Three Observations:

1. Topic feeds. The .RSS feed for a specific topic lists the same topic title for each post. Given that RSS readers tend to use the title as a heading, the topic feed ends up being listed as:

This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title. This is my topic title.

To differentiate items more, you could list the titles in topic rss feeds as: [Post #N] : [Posters name]

2. Alerts. There is no RSS feed for alerts / notifications.

3. Flags. There’s no RSS feed for flags eg: active flags.

Digital Ocean One Click Install vs Manual Install

@akhil wrote:

Hi,

I’m planning to install Discourse on a new sub-domain. The best option for hosting is Digital Ocean.

I have only basic knowledge of Linux. But I know how to install discourse manually, activating SSL, etc.

But I have few questions:

  1. Since I don’t have a system admin, which is the best option to install and maintain Discourse? Manual/One Click?

  2. I heard about OS updates. Many of the members of this forum are recommending to apply software patches regularly. In this case, which is the best option? One Click/Manual?

  3. If I proceed with manual installation, is it difficult to update the OS/Any other regular process of removing unwanted files, etc.?

Look forward to a clear suggestion :slight_smile:

Hey,
we are thinking about using discourse with a SSO out of another, leading platform. User credentials will be transmitted via SSO. Questions is wether it is necessary to transmit the user’s language out of the leading platform or is this not necessary as discourse might pull this from the browser directly?

Thanks,

but I am always getting the response:
{“failed”:“FAILED”}

Eventhough I am already logged in to Discourse.
If it needs an api_key or something… where can I get it? I am thinking I do not have enough access/permission to do this… or I may be missing something here.

I would really want to extract the email address.

Memberpress: how to add users to groups upon Sign up

@Dani1 wrote:

Hi, I use Memberpress on my WP site.

My Discourse forum is set to user groups, rather than permissions levels. Being a member of a group is what determines permissions.

At this moment new members land perfectly inside Discourse, but they come in at Trust_0 and then I have to manually assign them to their group.

How can I connect the membership levels to the Discourse Groups so that this happens automatically upon Signup?

Thanks!

Manual topic summary

$

@anarcat wrote:

There is a feature called “topic summaries” in Discourse that identifies important posts in a discussion (based on number of likes) and shows them prominently.

But I wonder if it would be useful to have a way to manually write an actual summary (a single post) of a discussion, that would show up at the top of the discussion. It would be basically like allowing other users to edit the original post, or append a summary to it. The idea would be to avoid rehashing already asked questions (which might have been downvoted) and outline what the point of the discussion has become at this point, without requiring users to read through many different posts (even if summarized).

This could be implemented simply by using this plugin:

… and encouraging users to add “summary comments”, but that doesn’t seem like an idea workflow.

Another approach is to simply start a new topic that is a summary of the old one, for example this was done here:

… but it feels like the conversation is then broken and could even be split up, if the older topic isn’t closed…

Is there room for such an improvement? I must say I was excited when I first noticed the “topic summary” button: I thought this was it! But then I was confused because I couldn’t edit the summary (first) and (second) that I couldn’t find a single summary describing the whole topic, only an automatically generated list of comments that were not specifically designed as summary posts.

Does that make sense?

Shared Drafts: Allow staff to collaborate on posts before publishing

$

@eviltrout wrote:

I’ve recently merged a new feature into Discourse called Shared Drafts. The feature is meant for forums where staff members want to work on drafts together before publishing them.

How to Enable

Go into your site’s settings and designate a category as shared drafts category:

You can use the staff category that comes with Discourse to do this, or you can use a new category if you prefer. Make sure that the category is restricted to those who want to view and publish drafts!

Creating a Shared Draft

When creating a topic, click the reply icon on the top left of the composer, and choose Shared Draft:

image

Once selected, you can choose the destination category where you’d like the topic published when it’s ready.

When it’s ready, click Create Shared Draft and your shared draft will be created!

Finding + Reviewing Shared Drafts

You can see a list of your shared drafts by visiting the category you chose when enabling the feature. When in the category you’ll see the destination category for the topic in the topic list:

As a bonus, you’ll also see your shared draft listed when browsing the destination category, above the regular topic list. This is an easy way to see what drafts are in progress for a particular category:

Publishing your Shared Draft

When you view your shared draft, you get a big control area at the top that allows you to publish it:

Once you click Publish Shared Draft the following will happen:

  • The topic will be published into the destination category
  • The timestamps of the topic will be changed to be the time of publishing
  • Any edit history on the first post will be removed

Shared Drafts work nicely with topic timers, so you can still publish at a specific time in the future if you like.

Please try out the new feature and let us know how it works!
