Plugin for embedding Discourse topics in wordpress pages or posts

Hi,

I did a quick and dirty wordpress plugin so you can easily embed topic content in your wordpress pages using a shortcode. It is still beta AND I'm not a webdevelopper so be careful using it for the moment.

To use it, you just need to provide the url of your discourse forum in the plugin settings and then add this shortcode [discourse topic_id='xxx'] in the editor.

It will include the first post of the topic as pure html in the wordpress page. I did it so our community can create and maintain their project presentation on the forum while it is nicely displayed in the main web site.

Here you have an example:
https://www.poppy-project.org/test-discourse-shortcode/

The code is here:
https://github.com/matthieu-lapeyre/wp-discourse-topic-integration

It stills miss some CSS and template but the base is here.
Contributions and extensions are very welcome smile

Spoiler tag not working with CDN and CORS

@cawas wrote:

Continuing the discussion from Folding spoilers:

I've checked the Console and it looks like it may not be working thanks to some cross-origin issues with CDN:

I'll copy the text from the error for search engines:

Font from origin 'http://talk-cdn.cregox.com' has been blocked from loading by Cross-Origin Resource Sharing policy: No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource. Origin 'http://talk.cregox.com' is therefore not allowed access.

Basically the same error message as found in another probably related issue, except this is trying to load a font rather than a script.

But my case here is a little peculiar.

I had enabled CDN on app.yml and later gave up on it due to some issues with CloudFlare (can't even remember which issues). I also (still) don't really need a CDN so, instead of rebaking everything (hate going to ssh) I thin I've decided to just set the CNAME from talk-cdn.cregox.com to talk.cregox.com and remove CloudFlare. That worked fine, until now! stuck_out_tongue

I've re-enabled CDN, in an attempt to remove this little hack rather than implementing a new one (I was thinking about going to customize header and add a policy there). Thanks to Jeff's hint on how to do it on CloudFlare.

But it's still not working! frowning

The cdn link doesn't give an error, sets the HTML tag where it should be (a <span class="spoiler">) but looks like there's no code (css or javascript) to handle that.

Any clues?

On one of my self-hosted Discourse, (fully up to date docker_manager and a docker image only a few weeks old ) I just ran in this error upgrading. I don't know what version the site was on before, but it was only about 30 commits behind on tests-passed.

The site seems to be fine & responding, but I figured I'd mention something before I ./launcher rebuild app

PS no, this isn't the site I mess with server.en.yml, it's just plain Discourse

Use Wordpress Header for Discourse

Hey,

Id like to use the following theme: http://demo.tagdiv.com/newspaper/

As you can see, it shows latest news by hovering over the menu items in the nav bar. Is there any way to implement the whole header including those latest news into the header of discourse? This would be awesome!

Using Discourse without any email interaction

Hi,

Email setup is a pain compared to running Discourse. Is there any way to just run it without any email interactions at all ?

Reasons:

  • Email is hard to setup: In my docker install install, ./launcher mailtest app is working perfectly but not when I sign up
  • Privacy-sensitive website don't use emails (for example reddit on HN )

How ?

I don't know if this is an already solved problem, it's just a question.

EDIT: Consider this solved

Wouldn't it be nice if Discourse automatically compiled whitelist suggestions for Oneboxing based on posts?

Even better, the suggestions can cite which posts the suggested domains were used in, as well as the iframely.com/debug is iframed to help the admin decide.

Hello! I would like to use discourse to build a community for information security professionals and novices. Some of this would involve sharing sensitive information, but only with users that have been vetted, and can be trusted, Is there any way to restrict categories to specific users.

Apologies if this question has been asked before. I searched, but could not find anything.

I apologise if this has been covered before, I've looked but I have not seen this talked about. It has been happening since as long as I can remember.

  1. Read to bottom of topic
  2. Type a reply and as soon as you finish and click "Reply" immediately return to the main list of topics.
  3. The user is given the notification that there is a new/updated topic at the top.

  1. When user clicks that item the the topic list is refreshed but there are no new notifications next to any topic.

(also works when submitting a new topic)

I am using Chrome, and we are on the latest version of Discourse 1.4b3 (although it has happened consistently through several versions). As such I'm not sure it classifies as a "bug" but it can be confusing to users.

Discourse doesn't work on FreeBSD

@tux0r wrote:

According to the docs, there is a rule about support:

The only officially supported installs of Discourse are the Docker based beginner and advanced installs. We regret that we cannot support any other methods of installation.

If I'm not entirely mistaken, Discourse entirely uses OSS software like Ruby which are supposedly working alike on all operating systems. This rule basically doesn't allow me - and a couple of companies and other users - to use Discourse at all although it would work flawlessly.

I only use FreeBSD and OpenBSD servers, and while I'm positive there would be not a single problem using Discourse right from the GitHub repository, the fact that the developers stated they won't help me in case of issues (it's a "we don't want you to use Discourse with your server", not a "Discourse will not work on your server") prevents me from doing so.

I suggest you to lift the ban on sane operating systems just because they don't support Docker or to provide alternative installation methods for *BSD and/or Windows servers.

Thank you.

Remove moderator ability to view users email addresses

$

@AstonJ wrote:

There were some excellent changes to mod permissions as per this topic Permission Changes (moderators have less). I feel removing the ability for mods to view email addresses should be considered too.

There are several reasons for this:

Data Protection - In the UK there are laws governing digital personal data and I feel that there isn't sufficient reason to let moderators (who are usually unpaid volunteers) view people's personal email addresses (somebody in the thread mentioned it helps with spam - but I think it would be better to improve spam tools instead).

Theft - I have lost count of the number of times I have heard about an ex moderator deciding to start a competing forum. It is bad enough when they use the original forum's PM system to steal members but with the current Discourse settings they just need to make a note of everyone's email address.

Spam/security - If a moderator's account is breached the email addresses could be stolen/spammed.

User trust - I don't think people expect moderators to have access to their email address when they sign up to a forum.

While we do our best to choose good honest mods we don't always get it right - I think allowing them to see email addresses is extremely risky.

What's the proper way to set up Discourse behind a reverse proxy?

@seanthegeek wrote:

I'd like to set up ningix on my docker host to be a reverse proxy for my Discourse web-only container, so that I can host sites other than Discourse on the same host. I know I need to modify the expose section, but what about DISCOURSE_HOSTNAME? Will Discourse except connections from 127.0.0.1 from the reverse proxy if DISCOURSE_HOSTNAME is set to something like forum.example.com?

What controls the return_url sent by sso?

@ikbear wrote:

I am using Discourse CAS sso app, but after logging into my CAS server from discourse, it redirects me to this address: http://localhost:3000/session/sso_login?sso=bm9uY2U9N2, I am using pow for local development, so localhost is invalid.

I have changed it to "discourse.dev" in discourse_defaults.conf or discourse.conf, but it seems don't work.

My issue is also recorded here: https://github.com/eriko/discourse_cas_sso/issues/2

So, the question is: what controls the return_url sent by sso? Thanks.

Incorrect UI when issuing multiple password resets

@codinghorror wrote:

If you are trying to get your mail configuration right (e.g. an SMTP relay on the docker host), this feature refuses to send the email a second time. I think there may be a timer there to avoid it being used for spamming a random email address.

So if you mess up your mail configuration this seems like the quickest way of getting it to send a second activation email:

docker exec -it app bash
su postgres
psql
delete from users where email='me@myaddress.com';

I can see why you want that once the board is setup, but installation would be a lot easier if the anti-spam timer were disabled until at least one account has been activated.

User was forced to wait for approval, despite a pending invitation

@watchmanmonitor wrote:

I invited a user to my hosted forum, and now I see his email address in my users pending approval. How can this be?

I don't really know how he found out the forum URL without clicking the invitation link , but even if he registered fresh, I'd like to think that the pending invitation from a matching email address would act as an approval for his pending account.

PS I can certainly wait until Monday while to approve Mark, while the team looks into this.
