Ability to globally set any site setting at the admin level?

Is this something that could happen eventually? We'd really like it! Setting "mailing list mode" to on by default would be one thing we'd do on our new forum.

Group names are case insensitive, can be duplicated, typed wrong in invite csv

Tobias Eigen wrote:

It's possible to have two groups with the same name but with a different case. This is confusing and leads to potential problems with bulk inviting and users mentioning groups later if the admin isn't careful. Not a major issue but seems a bug nonetheless.

Optional Redirect on Creation of New Category

So, loving the software - my first dive into a RoR package as an admin and it's looking like I didn't give the language it's due. My kudos on all the hard work so far.

On creation of new categories, Discourse automatically redirects you to a view of the newly created category.

Redirection after category creation should be optional behavior, as it is a real pain in the behind for setting up a whole slew of new categories. Admins and moderators establishing categories up front will have a lot of unnecessary clicks using the current model.

A simple configuration option for redirect on category creation or no redirect would suffice. The default can remain redirect, but it's definitely not something I'd be keeping.

Thanks

How do I disable RC4 SSL support?

I'd like to remove RC4 from the SSL ciphersuite. I tried editing templates/web.ssl.template.yml, because that seems like the likely place, but that file is part of the git repository, so it didn't seem like something I should edit. Is this something I should override in app.yml, or is there some other place?

Category-specific title and text length settings for mailing list categories vs discussion categories

Tobias Eigen wrote:

I am in the process of switching over a community from mailing lists to discourse, and am coming across the issue that mailing list users like to send one word (or even one letter) emails to their mailing lists, and I don't want to prevent them from doing that since I want the transition to be as seamless as possible. Some of the mailing lists are not heavy on discussion but rather are more about coordination of meetings, sending birthday greetings, informing about office stuff eg there's snacks in the kitchen.

Meanwhile we are switching to discourse in large part because we want to start encouraging the civilized discussion that discourse was created to facilitate. smile

The answer, methinks, is to provide category-specific title and text length settings. There might also be other settings that need to be reviewed for this, but these are the most troublesome on our site.

What email address do you use for your discourse site?

Tobias Eigen wrote:

I am debating which email address to use for my discourse site and would like to understand a bit better how this is intended to be used and what others are doing.

The domain of my discourse is eg http://community.foo.org and so it seems sensible to use comunity@foo.org as the email to send all discourse email from. But that email address does not exist already - should it be set up as an alias of another commonly used role mailbox like info@foo.org or foo@foo.org?

I have set up google apps with discourse@foo.org as the mailbox that all mailing lists and forum replies are sent to, which is working correctly. Should this instead be e.g. community@foo.org and be the same address configured for notification emails?

[User] accepted your invitation" PM actually links to your own invite list

Continuing the discussion from "[User] accepted your invitation" PM link points to null topic:

The notification about a user accepting your invitation links you back to your invite list, not to the invited user's page. The latter would be more sane and useful, since you can then look at it to review the user's settings.

I am currently tracking 50+ invitees and this process of clicking the notification and being sent to my invite list, looking for the newly accepted invitation on the list and clicking on it is cumbersome and a bit confusing.

Topic failed to load - suggestions for improvement

Scott Trager wrote:

Hi guys,

I was having some local connection issues when I came across the "Topic failed to load" screen for the first time.

I have some suggestions on how to improve this to make the screen even more helpful... Take what you like, throw away the rest - this is just me throwing ideas out there.....

Suggestion 1 - Track the "Try Again" clicks - if it is clicked more than X times (configurable in settings) make it so that a "Contact Us" button appears either with a form, PM, or even a configurable mailto link.

  • Suggestion 1b - Make this number reportable in the Dashboard (ideally
along with its referrer) - a spike in overall clicks to this button
might indicate an issue with the site or a link somewhere.

Suggestion 2 - Check the users connection with a ping to a major server (http://www.google.com ??) and if there is limited or no connection inform the user of this. As-is it appears to the user that the issue is with the site and they could be sitting there hitting "try again" until the cows come home if their router is unplugged....

Suggestion 3 - Make the "Topic failed to load" text more prominent. Center it perhaps?

Suggestion 4 - Add a section under Admin to edit this statement. This way a forum can customize their error text without relying on a plugin or a modification.

Suggestion 5 - Update the default text for this to "Sorry! This topic cannot be loaded at this time. This most often occurs due to a connection problem. Please wait a minute and try again. If the problem persists, let us know."

Suggestion 6 - Add a configurable "timer" before the "Try Again" button appears (2-3 seconds default, where it is grayed out after loading the page to prevent someone using it to hammer the site.

Suggestion 7 - Allow for an optional simple Captcha if the Try Again button is used more than a few times.

Suggestion 8 - Add a configurable (in Admin) image. By default use something like an Ethernet cable unplugged from a jack to hint to the user that the issue may be on their end. A picture is worth 1,000 words - often literally when it comes to forums.

Setup permissions for topics based on who created the topic

I would like to be able to setup permissions for two different groups (P1 and P2). When a user from the P1 group creates a topic, the topic is not shown to users in P2 unless the topic is allowed by an admin or moderator. If a user from P2 creates a topic, everyone in P1 and P2 can see it. Is that a possibility? I do not want to do this using categories.

Getting plugins available in docker

Continuing the discussion from How to version a plugin?:

Okay, so my night completely changed. So I got a chance to build a VM and get docker going. All that is fine and dandy, but I'm struggling getting a plugin going.

I've updated my app.yml with

hooks:
  after_code:
    - exec:
        cd: $home/plugins
        cmd:
          - mkdir -p plugins
          - git clone https://github.com/discourse/docker_manager.git
          - git clone https://github.com/cpradio/composer-help-button.git

Then I ran ./launcher bootstrap app and ./launcher start app, but the composer-help-button plugin doesn't exist... So I'm lost.

I'm currently running Discourse on CoreOS because I like the idea of a minimal, well, "core" stuck_out_tongue with a reliable update system.

Since the Discourse devs recommend Ubuntu, I wonder if they'll ever settle on Ubuntu Core?

  1. Is this possible?
  2. Will single sign-in work if I do this? https://meta.discourse.org/t/official-single-sign-on-for-discourse/13045
  3. Is this the best choice of combination?
  4. Do you recommend they are hosted with the same host?
  5. What would you do?
