Elastic scrolling on ipad causes header to unstick from top of window

@Simon_Cossar wrote:

Over-scrolling downwards on an ipad causes the header to unstick from the top of the window. If the drop-down menu is open the header will move underneath it.

This is happening because during the over-scroll the .docked class is dropped from the body and the header's position is changed from fixed to absolute. Setting .d-header { position: fixed; } keeps the header stuck to the top of the window. I'm not sure if doing that causes other problems though.

Edit - setting .d-header to alway have position: fixed interferes with having a custom header.

Migrating a production website: Doing it right the first time

@payetteforward wrote:

Hey Discourse meta users,

I'm the founder of http://www.payetteforward.com, an iPhone help-related website that currently gets 750,000 uniques / month and we're growing.

Our forum is built on bbPress. Discourse is miles ahead of bbPress in terms of user experience - I don't have to tell you why I'm migrating.

I'll lay out my primary concerns here. I've done a lot of Googling and searching on this forum, and I'm still unclear about some of the problems that could occur during migration and how to avoid making costly mistakes.

I'm positive there are a lot of us out here who are in a similar situation: Tech-savvy enough to spin up a Discourse server and understand basic Linux administration, but whose technical expertise falls off at the precipice of Ruby and Docker. I had dinner last night with the owner of a successful company whose bbPress forum has 80,000 registered users. He sees the value in Discourse too, but even as a programmer, he's apprehensive about making the switch.

Here are my primary concerns:

SEO

My website is built on Google organic traffic. I rank #1 for a lot of popular search terms and a Google penalty could mean the end of my livelihood and my company. You can understand why it's so important to me.

I understand that each Wordpress post should have a corresponding topic on Discourse to handle comments.

I am concerned about a duplicate content penalty that could occur if Google thinks an article is posted on two separate URLs, and I would never want Discourse to outrank the articles on my website. I see that Discourse can include only a section of each article rather than post the full text, but I'm still concerned.

The plus side of using Discourse is this: To leave a comment, users have to visit the forum, which increases my engagement and total number of page views. I could rel=canonical the original post, but that would mean extra work. I could noindex the Discourse page, but I want the comments to be searchable. I can see the potential Discourse has for helping SEO by creating another page with unique, relevant content, but my gut tells me it could be a disaster.

Migrating from Disqus to Discourse

I'm currently using Disqus and one of my articles has about 500 comments. I'm tech savvy and I'm not looking for a step-by-step walkthrough of how to do it - those already exist on this forum.

I'm also not looking for a walkthrough about how to integrate Discourse comments into Wordpress posts, although the information on that seems less explored. If anyone has experience to share about how they integrated Discourse comments into Wordpress (using wp-discourse or otherwise), I'd be grateful to hear it.

Migrating from bbPress to Discourse and SSO

My friend with 80,000 bbPress users and I are both apprehensive about what specifically will happen when we import bbPress users and posts into Discourse. I'm familiar with the Primetime SSO plugin and as I understand it, SSO will seamlessly allows users in our Wordpress database to log in to Discourse using their existing credentials.

Here's where I'm not so clear:

Does the flow of information go both ways? If a user creates an account on the Discourse site (using Facebook, Twitter, or a standalone account), is that information fed back into the Wordpress users database?

It's important to capture user email addresses and keep all user information in one database. Is that how SSO works? Or are there two databases, one for Discourse and one for Wordpress, and the Discourse database only reads user data from the Wordpress database to facilitate log in?

Emails sent during migration

I've read the forums and the strong warnings, but I'm unclear about exactly when emails are sent during the import process and why it's so necessary to validate users' emails before migrating. This language scares the heck out of me:

Discourse uses emails to map external users to Discourse users, and assumes that external emails are secure. IF YOU DO NOT VALIDATE EMAIL ADDRESSES BEFORE SENDING THEM TO DISCOURSE, YOUR SITE WILL BE EXTREMELY VULNERABLE!
Alternatively, if you insist on sending unvalidated emails BE SURE to set require_activation=true, this will force all emails to be validated by Discourse.

I will clearly ask my questions:

Are emails sent to users when SSO is enabled?
Are emails sent to users when bbPress is migrated?
Are emails sent to users with Disqus comments are imported?
Why is it so important to validate users' email addresses before an email gets sent to them? (I have 15,000 people in my user database and validating them all would be impossible.)
Why does it make the forum so vulnerable?
How does Discourse validate emails if require_activation is set to true?
Where do I set require_activation=true?

I understand that these questions may seem trivial or simplistic, but I have to ask. With a production website that is my sole source of income and my passion, I can't get it wrong the first time.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!

I am excited to be on the leading edge of mainstream adoption of this awesome software. I want to become a Discourse success story, but I need your help to get there.

Thank you so much,
David Payette

I want to migrate all my wordpress post going to discourse as my primary platform, as of now my site is consists of wordpress as my primary domain then a forum which uses discourse on a subdomain.

What I want to do now is move all my wordpress post to discourse so I can make my discourse forum as my primary site now and put it on my primary root domain.

so far what I am seeing a solution for this is using the plugin of wordpres to post all my recent articles going to discourse.

but I don't want to manually do it. Is there a better or faster way so that I can officially remove my wordpress site and make my discourse discussion site as my primary platform.

I just want to move all my recent post from my wordpres going to discourse

hoping for some feedbacks regarding this matter thank you :smile:

Can a moderator or a TL4 staff post a topic that will trigger an email to all users? i think Admin posts trigger emails, but what about moderators and other TL4 staff.

for example, in our forum, we have super users, those people sometimes have important announcements that needs quickly be shared with all users, is there a function that would trigger an email notification after posting a topic only available to certain users? or maybe there's a way around it?

I know in iOS 9 they allow you to upload from Content Providers (Dropbox, iCloud, etc) in addition to the photo library, so not sure if that has anything to do with it…

Can't create topics or edit site settings. Also markdown formatter is broken

@Un3qual wrote:

Solved: Multiple rebuilds fixed this. :grinning:

Currently i'm unable to create a category. When I open the dropdown and click on New Category, nothing happens.
Additionally, whenever I try to edit the site settings the red "Sorry, an error has occurred." text appears. Also the buttons in the markdown box are gone:

I figured this might have been a site_customizations issue, so I tried to disable all of the customizations, but I can't save. I ended up going into the app and running

SiteCustomization.update_all(enabled: false)

That still did not fix it, (it worked but the problem is still there), so I went further and edited the site customizations with SQL.

update site_customizations SET head_tag = concat('<!-- ', head_tag, ' -->') ;
update site_customizations SET header = concat('<!-- ', header, ' -->') ;

if @codinghorror, @sam, or any other admin else wants an admin account on the site to look further, just PM me with a gmail email so I can confirm it's you.

Redirect / for non-logged in users?

@JSey wrote:

Not really sure if this has been discussed before - and also not if this is more “feature request” or more “extensibility”. Since I feel this is something others might have considered, I wanted to ask you guys here: In my opinion, it would make major sense to send all anonymous traffic landing on my page directly to /categories instead of /latest.

For the registered users in my community, it makes more sense to show them what happened lately - but for the public, it's much better to show them the structure of what's going on. I could even imagine a (custom) profile setting for each user where they can specify where they want to land when they go to http://example.com - depending on their favourite mental structure either categories, or latest (or even unread or new or...).

I wonder if this can be easily (or not-so-easily) be achieved by a custom user script, plugin or extension of the core functionality?

Using Babble to extend functionality of private messages

@erlend_sh wrote:

Continuing the discussion from Babble - A Chat Plugin:

Babble (i.e. Chat) as an extension of PMs, as seen on Facebook

As opposed to a shoutbox or public chat, I'd like to see Babble incorporated into PMs. Pretty much exactly like Facebook does. There's a lot I don't like about Facebook, but I'm hard pressed to find anything negative to say about its Chat experience. I think it's very cleverly designed, the way in which it invites both short-form and long-form messages by presenting the user with two alternative chat interfaces:

  1. The gutter widget (non-existent in Discourse)
  2. The full-page chat (very similar to PMs in Discourse)

I think Discourse stands to gain a lot from incorporating (1) as well.

Take for instance the UX for PM-ing a user about a tiny detail in their post. Things like typos, prompts for updates etc.

How "Message" works now

1 - You start out here:

2 - And clicking "Message" takes you here:

(which in Sam's case is unusually scary with Gavin Belson ominously scrutinising your post)

The problem is that you've been transported to a different room altogether, when really all you wanted to do (or so I'm positing anyways) was to have a brief sidebar with this person, only to resume to the main discussion at hand moments thereafter. This is what Facebook does so well with its in-page chat widgets. You can easily send someone a quick nudge without disrupting disrupting your super-productive session of Facebooking.

How "Message" could work

1 - What if this:

2 - Took me to something like this instead? (not leaving the page)

Which could be continued like this:

And be accessed via something like this:

This could also play very nicely with User Friending/Following and Presence features. Think: If you follow a user who follows you back, that's the handshake necessary for the two of you to see one another's online status.

In summary: Default Private Messages instigated via topics to an in-page chat interface, with the option of moving into the full-page editor if you're looking to write a longform message.

Is this intended behaviour? it strikes me as quite odd. I don't know of any other web app that does this.

How does title and favicon notification work?

$

@sam wrote:

Out-of-the-box Discourse enables "title" notifications, this feature will "re-write" the browser title to denote how many new items your current page has.

User may opt to receive "favicon" notifications by selecting Show new / updated topic count on browser icon in user profile, when this is selected the notifications will be super-imposed on the browser icon.

This feature operates in 2 modes:

First mode is if you are watching topic list.

Or in the icon mode:

:alarm_clock: in topic list you should expect that the count in the blue box will always match the count in the title or icon.

Second mode is for watching a topic

By placing your tab on a topic page and then kicking tab to the background, we will start counting all new posts in the topic.

:alarm_clock: As soon as topic gains focus the count will go down to 0

Feature use cases:

  • Quickly tell if someone posted something new on a particular topic.
  • Quickly tell if you have new or unread posts on a category.
  • Quickly tell if there has been any new activity in the site since you last looked.
  • Unlike unread notifications this feature can be tapped by anonymous users and allows very high fidelity of notifications.

Option to show group private forums via the group page

$
0
0

@badevguru wrote:

It would be nice to have an option on the group page, perhaps below "members" that shows the private "categories" that this group has a membership for.

This would help with the case that I have users that are "afraid" to post to the private categories. This fear stems from a post process that starts from a "general" view of all categories. They don't trust themselves to always select the private forum from the dropdown of all forums.

If they were already in the private category before posting, and the category defaults correctly, they would be okay as they assume starting a post from the private area keeps it private. And while yes, they can navigate to the forum manually to begin with, there is something about just picking out the private forum from a list of all forums that they are not comfortable with.

This method would provide a route for those users to navigate to the private forums via their group membership. By going through the group first, they essentially have qualified in their mind that they are in a private section. Any navigation within that area would keep them in the "private section" thus making them feel more confident with posting in those categories.

To make the process even more complete, adding the option to "hide" private categories from the front page would re-enforce the aforementioned mental model. If a user wanted to get to the group categories they would have to tunnel through the group first. Of course, going down this path would also potentially justify enhancing the group default page to be a "group" filtered version of the current home page.

And of course, bringing your group membership out to the main page completes the workflow.

Where selecting the group would show you a list of the groups you are part of with the links to dive in to those group pages.
