Does this sound like a feasible plugin?

I would like to add traffic light "Agree", "Comment", "Disagree" [mode] buttons to topics. Once you select A/C/D on a topic, only replies to that topic in the selected mode show up. Replies to anything else will be hidden.

For example, if I posted a topic "Pussy cats are the best pets", someone could select "Agree" on that topic and see posts supportive of this position. Any reply posted would be tagged "Agree".

For my purposes, I only need the lead post to have A/C/D buttons. Otherwise I'd need a "reset" button so that every reply to a topic shows up.

Creating Topics Returns 500 Internal Server Error on Locale Instance

@Osama wrote:

Hey there,

I had to remove my old locale Discourse instance for some reasons. And I've just reinstalled it following this guide, created an admin account following this and logged in successfully. To my eyes, nothing went wrong during the installation. However, when I try to create a new topic, it says 500 Internal Server Error and the topic doesn't go through.

Also I want to mention that there is no pre-seeded topics in the new instance. In my old instance, there were a bunch of topics that were created with the instance for the FAQs page, admin documentation etc. Don't know if that's related to the issue.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

Intense API use floods staff log?

@rriemann wrote:

Hello,

when a mail comes in, I plan to query the Discourse API to find out the mail address of the corresponding Discourse acount using the Discourse API:

As @riking mentioned, this leads to one logged staff action per request. For many mails, this means a very long (useless) staff log. Is the log shortened at some point? Can I clean it? Do I have to expect any scalability issues?

Best,

Discourse Hot Topics

@joebuhlig wrote:

Repository: https://github.com/danskdynamit/discourse-hot-topics

This plugin creates a "Hot" sorting criteria and builds a custom topic list based on the result of the following formula:

likes / ((hours since creation + 2) ^ gravity)

Things to note:

  • The default gravity multiplier is 1.5 but you can adjust this in the settings for the plugin.
  • You can add "hot" to the list of menu items to make it easier to access.
  • There is also the option to add ?order=hot to a URL to create your own links.
  • Once enabled, the hot rating is recalculated every 30 minutes so it will take a bit of time to take effect at first. If you want to accelerate this, you can log in to Sidekiq and manually trigger the HotRating job.

This work was graciously sponsored by @commonpawn and @Oskar. Kudos to them for making this happen.

The following topics lend more background to why this exists:

Multisite Installation

I'm trying to get a multisite installation of discourse working with a different domain for each site and I'm getting a bit confused by the instructions https://meta.discourse.org/t/multisite-configuration-with-docker/14084

I've seen all the warnings about this being an advanced topic and fully confess that I'd never used docker before installing Discourse. On the other hand, I still need to get it working if we're going to use Discourse regardless of my lack of docker expertise :slight_smile:

I've got a single site installation up and running. The instructions talk about copying a pasting a new hooks section into the app.yml file (I think?) and talk about amending the host_names node in multisite.yml. I'm confused about where the multisite.yml file comes from? Do I need this in addition to the app.yml file? Also once I've got these files do I need to do a rebuild or something or will it all work automatically?

Attempting to delete 'This topic is no longer a banner' post in Site Assets topic crashes container

$

@jamesmarkcook wrote:

I previously happened to use the 'Assets for the site design' topic as a site banner, just to test the functionality. My site isn't live yet.

This creates a new post in the topic for when the banner is created, and another for when the post is no longer a banner.

I then happened to try and delete the post that gets created when you deselect the topic as a banner. After doing so, I got a 500 server error when trying to navigate anywhere else. I refreshed my site and of course the whole site was down with a 500.

I ssh'd into my server and attempted to rebuild the container. This resulted in some strange message from docker about my file system and it failed, saying that if I attempt to continue I may have a faulty installation.

I decided to manually stop and remove the container, and then rebuild. This worked, thankfully.

I haven't reproduced this again as I'm not running a development environment and I'd rather not do it to my production site again.

Can anyone else confirm this happens with a dev environment?

I was running Discourse version v1.6.0.beta11 +175 before it crashed.

This is obviously an edge case, but I still think it should be handled gracefully rather than crashing the system (if it is indeed this that crashed my container).

[PAID] Import old threads into Discourse from email list

What would you like done?

PART 1: Import Email List Archive Into Discourse

  1. We have long-running email discussion list which we'd like to import into a Discourse forum and then our users will be able to use Discourse moving forward rather than an email list. This should be possible using this open source script (another developer has successfully done this as a proof of concept). We want to be sure to: Create threads/messages for each unique email; create users for each unique email address; attribute correct messages to those users. Basically make it as if the conversations happened in Discourse to begin with.

  2. For some users, we have additional "profile" information which we'd like imported into their Discourse profile. We can point out exactly where this information is for ease of importing.

  3. Do some simple search/replace-type massaging to the data to make it look better here and there. We will specify this in more detail.

  4. We have an html archive of all the email discussions and we'll need a 301-redirect system to go from those old urls to new discourse urls. Preferably via a few regex rules and not individual redirects.

PART 2: Import Gallery Images Into Discourse

  1. We also have a mysql database full of "gallery images" that users have posted over the years which we'd like to import into a couple of special Discourse categories as threads. This will involve just marching through a database and creating threads in Discourse with an image and description.

  2. Do some simple search/replace-type massaging to the data to make it look better here and there. We will specify this in more detail.

When do you need it done?

Within the next 2 weeks.

What is your budget, in $ USD that you can offer for this task?

We're openminded and flexible about the budget.

I got here through a link from a Codecademy mod. Just wondering if anything was in the works as far as a previous/next topic button or toggle switch for the forums. It would be nice to get to the end of a series of posts on a given topic and have the option of going to a newer/previous topic without hitting a back button, checking browser history or clicking on the category name again.

General Chat not appearing in list & category descriptions

Hey guys,

Just got a fresh install of Discourse.

  1. So I have a general chat category (which is default) but it doesn't show up in the dropdown, why?

  2. When I add a new category, there's no place for a description - but when I edit a default category, there's space for one. How do I add a description?

Thanks

Using tags instead of subcategories for a car forum

@jamesmarkcook wrote:

Due to the limitations of nesting subcategories, I was wondering whether it's possible to have multiple Discourse instances (let's say 10) that are controlled by one master instance?

My predicament:

I'm using Wordpress SSO with one Discourse installation at the moment. However I'd like to have more than one layer deep of subcategories. This isn't possible with Discourse, so the above idea was proposed to me.

I realise Discourse can be SSO provider for another Discourse, but seeing as I'm using Wordpress as my SSO and need more than 2 Discourses it rules this out. My inkling is that I'd need to make substantial changes to the Wordpress Discourse plugin to get this working.

Not to mention collating all the statistics from each Discourse and making sure they apply to all Discourse sites.

I don't believe it's currently anywhere near possible, but thought I'd ask. It's probably simpler to get sub-subcategories working right?

Discourse tagging pluging improvement

Hello,

I am working on migration of vbulletin to Discourse. We have decided to convert our 4 Level categories from vbulletin to 3 Level in discourse by converting 2 Level in categories and 1 level as tag. We have also created 2 level of categories in discourse, now going to start work on topic import with tag. I have explored the discourse tagging plugin with discourse v1.5.3 but we found following limitation in it. What are you thoughts on it.

All tags are displayed without selecting any category, this may confuse user. In our opinion, tags should be loaded on selection of Level 2 category. Is discourse team have any plan to work on this issue?

Junaid

Hootsuite doesn't like Discourse RSS

Hi:

I'm using Hootsuite for managing our social networks at HackLab Almería. Hootsuite has a feature for autopublishing items using RSS feed. But for any reason I don't know it doesn't like our Discourse generated one:

The RSS feed is https://foro.hacklabalmeria.net/c/observatorio.rss and the validation service says it's kosher.

The more annoying thing is this feature was working some months ago and now I realized it doesn't, but don't know if is related with a Discourse upgrade or what.

Anyone knows if something can be wrong at Discourse side? We are using a recent updated 1.6.0.beta12 +108 version.

Allow post author to see/reply to whisper posts

Continuing the discussion from How do I create a whisper post?:

I like whisper posts and am finding them to be very useful. One use case that seems to be missing for me is the ability to include the post author in the aside conversation. I regularly write to post authors to let them know about edits, give them tips on improving their discussions and encourage them to invite certain people to contribute etc. I'd rather do it in a whisper (with moderators able to see) then a private message to the person.

Continuing the discussion from How do I create a whisper post?:

I just wrote a whisper reply and forgot to select the whisper toggle, then saved changes. I then went back during the ninja edit window and edited the post but there is no whisper toggle available. To fix this, I had to copy the text of my post, delete it and then recreate it. <phew>

Better would be to be able to see the whisper toggle. As moderator or admin, it seems to me I should be able to do this anytime on any post, even to help coordinate and stage replies before publishing them.

@neil wrote:

Now that tag support is a core feature of Discourse instead of being a separate plugin, we've added some new features around tagging. In this How-To I'll go through setting up a tag schema like Car Talk uses.

We'll want to achieve these things:

  • Tags for car makes and car models.
  • Only allow the car make and model tags to be used in certain categories.
  • Car model tags can only be chosen if the matching car make tag is used.

1. Pre-reqs

First, we need to enable tags in the settings:

In a schema where we're strict about how tags are used, we should prevent most people from creating new tags:

2. Tag Groups

Go to the tags index page (/tags). Choose "Manage Tag Groups" from the top right menu.

Top-level tags

First let's create the car make tags, which we want people to enter first.

On the tag group page:

  1. Create a new group.
  2. Give it a title.
  3. Add the tags that should belong in the group. You can add existing tags, or create new ones from this page.
  4. We only want people to use one car make tag per topic, so check the box to add this limitation.
  5. Save the group.

Parent-child tag relationships

Now we'll define the car model tags, which are grouped according to the car makes. There will be one group for each car make.

Create another group as before with an appropriate name. This time we add a parent tag. In this example, we define the Honda car models group, and use honda as the parent tag.

The result

At this point, tagging a topic will obey these rules. When trying to add tags, the first tag can only be one of the car makes (or other tags that have no limitations on where they can be used).

The second tag can be one of the model tags matching the chosen make tag.

3. Category restrictions

If I only want car discussions to happen in a certain category, I can restrict the use of all the car make and model tags from the category settings.

In the "Tags" tab of a category's settings, add the groups.

If I have other categories where these tags should also be permitted, they can be added in those categories' settings in the same way.

And that's it!

I stumbled upon a ruby version issue when setting up a Discourse development environment.

The install script that the beginners guide links to installs Ruby 2.2.3 here

However this code uses syntax that's only compatible from Ruby 2.3

This resulted in a syntax error for me when running the initial DB setup steps locally.

Either we need to change the version in the script to install 2.3 or change the code in that file.

'email in' for badly mailed emails

@carlokok wrote:

Maybe this is already solved, but we have two email addresses associated with our discourse instance:

"talk@ourdomain.com" ("contact email" and "notification email" settings)
"%@talk.ourdomain.com" ("re ply by email address")

when discourse sends a mail it's from address is talk@ourdomain.com and the reply to address as something@talk.ourdomain.com, this works well for most users, however some users manage to use the wrong address, either because they have a special support system on the other side or because their email client sucks.

I'm looking for suggestions on how to best handle this. I monitor the talk@ourdomain.com address for these cases, but is there some way I can "Feed" a post into discourse, either as a new post or append to an existing post but still retain the original user?
