What is the size of your Discourse instance?

Our community (Tappara.co, in Finnish) is less than one year old.

  • We have about 58k posts by 1000+ users. Images and backups are pushed to Amazon S3.
  • Our backup size today is about 217MB and growing at a rate of 0.5MB - pace will pick up as the season starts in two weeks.

According to OVH's dashboard, our instance is already using about 46GB of data, which seems quite a lot. I perform /launcher and apt cleanup jobs regularly.

I am getting slightly worried by the storage footprint of our forum, as we are in this for the long run. What are your numbers in terms of posts, users and storage consumed?

Onebox and shortened links

@jamesmarkcook wrote:

I'm using custom shortened links with my site for two reasons; to easily track link clicks through the bit.ly dashboard and for branding purposes on social media.

For reference my site is EVOwners and my custom domain shortlink begins with evown.rs

I wanted to use this within my Discourse forum and added evown.rs to the Onebox settings. However I assume because this shortened link redirects to the real link, Onebox has trouble picking up any information from it.

Would it be possible for Onebox to be compatible with shortened links at any point in the future? I realise you guys are extremely busy and this wouldn't be a priority, I just thought I'd suggest it as a potential Onebox enhancement for the future.

Hello,

I want to customize my forum Heading. Right now I have created a new div (as top-navbar) above logo, but I need it in same bar as logo. Can anyone please help me out, in which file I have to make changes.

I have tried changing in many files but that doesn't seem to be working.

Mysteriously rejected mails

@fefrei wrote:

Discourse just rejected some mails for me, and I don't understand why. The logged error is (a translated version of) Something has gone wrong. Perhaps this topic was closed or deleted while you were looking at it?

The most important headers of the three emails, which I unfortunately can share only in anonymized form, look like this:

Return-Path: <some@external-address.com>
Received: ...
Date: Wed, 31 Aug 2016 16:27:48 +0200
From: Some One <some@external-address.com>
To: group-inbox-1@my.discourse,
 another@external-address.com
Cc: another@external-address.com,
 group-inbox-2@my.discourse
Message-ID: <some-id@external-address.com>
In-Reply-To: <another-id@subdomain.external-address.com>
 <53dfc38f-9b63-f41e-3ab6-9ba92aced577@cs.uni-saarland.de>

Why could such an email be rejected with this reason? Note that it is not a reply to a topic, so closed or deleted doesn't apply. Maybe the fact that it is addressed to two group inboxes?

I also need to remove the new-topic button at the far right.

What is the proper way to do this? Plugin.rb? Javascript?

Add text area on user card and profile for logged out users

@scombs wrote:

Can we add a text area at bottom of the user card and user profile for logged out users? LinkedIn does something similar as follows:

View Steve's full profile to...

  • See who you know in common
  • Get introduced
  • Contact Steve directly

View Steve's Full Profile

I am mainly trying to let users know they can message a user (if they log in). A visible Message button (with prompt to login) or other indication on how to contact a user is the main problem I am trying to solve.

An optional/customizable text area for non-logged out users might be more flexible or easier to implement. Is there any easy way to do with it current features, CSS, etc.?

What goes in the activity summaries?

$

@Nick_Putman wrote:

I am wondering what content goes in the activity summaries that are sent out to users if they haven't visited the forum in the period specified in their user preferences?

First off, it seems to me that if a user is Watching a category then they get an email for every post in this category (i.e. the behaviour is the same as if they had enabled 'Mailing List mode - Send me an email for every new post', and there will be nothing from this category in the activity summary). Is this correct?

What happens though if a user is Tracking a category or Watching First Post?

And what happens for public categories that the user has not entered any settings for - are these also included in activity summaries, meaning that the only way to block categories from activity summaries is to Mute them?

I would like certain users to get an email which contains all activity since their last visit (according to the frequency set for activity summary). Am I right in thinking that, if I set the 'digest topics' setting to a very high number then all new content will be included in activity summaries?

If I am right about the above, then, as long as I set a very high number for 'digest topics', I shouldn't need to add any categories to users preferences, as they will get all content from the forum in the activity summaries. Again, I would be glad to know if this is correct.

Slack (official plugin) sending topics from staff categories

$

@kuyashi wrote:

Regarding:
https://github.com/discourse/discourse-slack-official

  • I have the plugin setup. However it is sending topics and replies from staff categories into the designated Slack channel. This, obviously presents an issue regarding privilege - I doubt this is intentional, so is there a work-around ?

  • Also, regarding the setup docs on the repo page above:

    • after step 4 it states:

      By default, every new post on your Discourse will now create a Slack message in the channel you specified..

  • ... this should be changed to state that setting up the slash command is not optional as once this plugin is installed, web-hook setup and a new topic is created/replied - it doesn't send to slack channel unless these instructions are followed, followed by entering the appropriate /command in the slack channel assigned:

    /discourse [watch|follow|mute|help|status] [category|all]

    watch – notify this channel for new topics and new replies
    follow – notify this channel for new topics
    mute – stop notifying this channel
    status – show current notification state and categories
    i.e. /discourse watch all

only then will new topics/replies be sent successfully to the slack channel.

My discourse sso just started (after years of working correctly) to redirect to a url location on the discourse site with /embed/comments rather than back to my allowed subdomain. What could be causing this? It seems the /session/sso_login is deciding where to redirect and that has somehow stopped working correctly.
