Diasable @user Feature for formatted text

Hi,

so I never used discourse before and when I just first used it over at discuss.neos.io and I wanted to post some code which I posted as formatted text, I got the error message: "New users are only allowed to meniton 2 users".

So don't think that's a nice solution. This features should be deactivateable for formatted text.

EDIT: I think that's already implemented and it's just my fault.

Activation email isn't sent when using IP address for mailserver

After installing a fresh discourse, activation email isn't sent to me. I think I have put everything correctly. However for the DISCOURSE_SMTP_ADDRESS, instead of smtp.somthing.org I have typed the ip address of the smtp provider. For some unknown reason I cant connect to them with their hostname and they have advised me to use their ip address.
when I telnet ip-address 587 everything works fine.
however in logs, I see this:

Sent mail to ***@gmail.com (1353.4ms)
Job exception: hostname "16*.**.***.***" does not match the server certificate

whats wrong?

Hide About Me for Suspended Users

@cpradio wrote:

We've recently switched to SSO and we've quickly discovered that accounts we've suspended are finding ways to regenerate their About Me text (we manually remove it) by logging in to the parent site.

The parent site, sends over Email, About Me, and maybe website to Discourse via SSO. What we'd like to do is hide the about me text from all users when the account is suspended. It is already hidden from user cards, but making it hidden on the Profile would be ideal for us too.

There are two things I could see being done here.

  1. SSO stops sending the about me data for suspended users
    • But how does SSO know the user is suspended?
  2. SSO doesn't permit updating the profile text when the user is suspended
    • Doesn't benefit non-SSO sites
  3. When the user is suspended, hide the About Me text from everyone (except staff?)

Are there any other possibilities I haven't thought about? And would any of the above (minus #1 obviously) be permitted as #pr-welcome?

Annoyance in Try Discourse sandbox

@STiNGER wrote:

I am interested in checking out Discourse, so I enter sandbox Try Discourse.

In order to post a new topic, I first have to sign up with a new account.

After all, the sandbox is reset at least one time a day, right?

Almost every single time upon signing up with a new account and trying to enter a new topic, I get error/warning/feature, or whatever you want to call it:

Account temporarily on hold
This is an automated message from Try Discourse to let you know that your account has been temporarily placed on hold as a precautionary measure...

And of course, the temporarily on hold is never alleviated, rendering the whole purpose of a sandbox useless.

Can anyone explain to me why this happens, how I can prevent it, and why the heck anyone would do this in a sandbox??

And oh yeah, if I try to enter new topic anyway, I get error/warning/feature:

You are not permitted to view the requested resource.

again rendering the whole concept of a sandbox even more useless.
But that's just me.

Bizarro Stack Overflow

@Sara_Noel wrote:

I guess this is what I want.

I want a forum, but with Q&A combined. But I want the conversation to be front and center and the Q&A prominent, but not the primary focus and separated out from the conversations.

Problem: I find it frustrating to go through posts in a thread to find what I want to know. I have a forum and I have a separate Q&A section (Wordpress plugin). Right now the Q&A serves a specific purpose which is to answer reader mail that I didn't have time to respond to in the past few years. But it's open to the community to ask and answer questions, as well. They serve two different purposes, but sometimes it overlaps and even I am not sure if I should be adding it to the Q&A (Knowledge Base) or the Forum (Discussion-Based). Then when the responses are really good, I'm like okay wiki post!

Possible Solution: Have a sub-thread of a thread, I guess? Basically, where people can post a question to the original poster or answer in response to a original post. And it can be collapsible and located underneath the first post near the post summary. I get that a question could be continued/started as a new thread and still linked. But that's not quite what I want either.

So there would be a post a reply button and a post a question button.

Then the Q&A would be toward the top for people that want solutions and not conversation. Ideally, Q&A could be pulled up in advanced search.

I only know I wish these two things could be combined, but in the opposite way of Stack Overflow. I don't care about votes, ratings, best solution or anything like that. I just wish I could combine these two things, but have the discussion still the main focus and not the Q&A.

Help. I've been away from all things technological for a few years now. I took a long hiatus. I don't know what is available, what does what at all anymore. So if this already exists in some way that I don't know/understand, I apologize in advance. Lately, I feel like it's my first day on the internet and I just learned how to copy and paste.

And if this is a lame idea just say so, as discobot says, it won't hurt my feelings. LOL

But here's another example, maybe more people would ask questions on a forum, if they didn't feel like a weirdo because their question was posted, but not prominent. LOL I've typed this question like 4 times and deleted it. I sense, as per my usual haha, that I am simply misunderstanding something that's right in front of me. LOL (But hey, I couldn't FIND IT!) And yes, I know there's the plugin with the accepted answer. That's not exactly what I mean. It's fairly close, though. But consider if the original poster is not the person asking or wanting a question answered. Discussion first, Q&A secondary, but important for future reference, so prominent location. I just want a knowledge base combined in an easily accessible way. Wiki post is a start to solving one part of this problem for me. Although I wish it was a full wiki.

Thanks for reading all of this. I had too much coffee today.

Facebook image for topics not showing correctly

Despite my "default opengraph image url" field in the settings being filled properly, a topic page from my discourse returns this error in the facebook scraper:

"The 'og:image' property should be explicitly provided, even if a value can be inferred from other tags."

Facebook instead chooses the forum header image for its preview image, rather than the opengraph image I have set.

Am I missing something? Thanks!

Watch Groups to Receive Notifications when Members Post

@alexs wrote:

In the Monzo Discourse community the Monzo employees are all part of a group 'Monzo'.

The employees posts sometimes include time sensitive announcements & the most important news so it would be useful for the other members of the community to be able to receive a notification when members of this group post.

To give another example, there's also a group that's made up of Monzo investors & certain Monzo employees may want to be notified of all posts from that group.

Using this feature, users would essentially choose to 'watch' a group, instead of a specific post.

This feature would be even more powerful now that there are iOS & Android apps and users can receive notifications without having to have Discourse open in their computer's browser.

Could this feature be added?

Block form component

@jamesmarkcook wrote:

I'm attempting my first plugin and have come across this in the codebase:

{{#discovery-categories refresh="refresh"}}
  {{component categoryPageStyle
              categories=model.categories
              latestTopicOnly=latestTopicOnly
              topics=model.topics}}
{{/discovery-categories}}

I've done some basic Ember recently, but haven't come across the {{#name}} syntax yet.

I learnt to use components like (without the hash in the name):

{{component-name}}

Does the hash/pound symbol represent anything special? Is it even a component? And why is the categoryPageStyle component being called with 'component' in front of it?

Thanks!

Limiting/forcing single hostname in a setup alongside multiple (Apache served) sites

@ReadySteadyFlow wrote:

Hi there! Thanks to all your help here I managed to get discourse working alongside multiple sites served by Apache. When visiting foo.com the request is forwarded to port 8080, just like this.

But when a client request my other sites on port 8080, Discourse is now also served (e.g. at bar.com:8080). I've set DISCOURSE_HOSTNAME: foo.com in app.yml, but this doesn't seem to be enforced by Docker. Any ideas on how to limit access from the web to my Discourse installation, only for clients requesting foo.com?

Which template corresponds to bulk invitation with specified topic id?

@BillyZac wrote:

I would like to customize the email that users receive when they are invited via the bulk invitation. I have a topic id in the third column of the csv so that users land on that topic when they first log in.

This is all working just fine. Now I would like to customize the email sent to invited users. I can't for the life of me figure out which email template corresponds to this message. I am going through, one by one, modifying the template, sending a test invitation... no luck. I feel like there must be a more straightforward way to figure this out. Is there documentation on which template corresponds to this scenario? What am I missing?
