How to use Noto Sans for posts but Sans UI for everything else?

@ljpp wrote:

I have been trialing with the Google Noto fonts. The Noto Sans is quite pleasant for longer posts, as it has a bit more horizontal spacing/width. I looks fantastic on deviced with high DPI, such as modern mobile phones and larger devices with a very high resolution.

The width of Noto Sans may cause some issues with the UI of Discourse, such as the burger menu. The Noto font package includes a Noto Sans UI version of the font, with a smaller horizontal footprint. This makes me wonder how to customize Discourse so that:

  • The posts are using font Noto Sans
  • All of the UI are in Noto Sans UI

This could be visually nice, or what say you?

Fade out/in CSS feature of first post

I've noticed a fade out CSS effect when I enter a topic on the first post of the first posts background. Is there a way to disable this via CSS?

It's a cool feature, but on some of our categories with backgrounds, it can make the text hard to read for the first few seconds and appears a bit jarring. Without category backgrounds, it seems to work better. also, when ads are also loading in the pages, it feels like there is too much animating.

However, since the plugin is broken and I'm no HTML/CSS expert I need some help. I figured out how to add a button but I don't know how to get the stream view to pop up. Any help would be much appreciated.

Automating Server Maintenance

@jomaxro wrote:

So I will be leaving the university where I have set up Discourse as an internal knowledge base in a few weeks. As the server is specific to the group I worked with, it isn't managed by any of the existing sys-admins. My supervisor has requested that I automate some of the maintenance tasks that I do to avoid the need for manual intervention. I've been thinking about what I do to the server, and have organized the commands into a weekly cron job. Can anyone (like @mpalmer) think of a reason why this would be dangerous, and is there anything I can add to it? (Note, I know ./lanucher rebuild app shouldn't be neccessary this often, but she doesn't know how reliable the new Discourse admins will be in updating via Docker Manager...)

sudo crontab -e:

# Edit this file to introduce tasks to be run by cron.
#
# **Comments removed from upload as they're irrelevant to post**
#
# m h  dom mon dow   command
0 3 * * 1 /var/www/html/weeklyCleanup > /var/log/weeklyCleanup/cleanup.log 2>&1

/var/www/html/weeklyCleanup:

#!/bin/bash
# Weekly update and Cleanup Script

apt-get update -q
apt-get upgrade -q
apt-get autoclean -y -q
apt-get autoremove -y -q
cd /var/discourse
git pull
./launcher rebuild app
./launcher cleanup
sudo shutdown -r 5 "Server is going down for weekly cleanup. Please save and close any applications you are working with."

/etc/logrotate.d/weeklyCleanup:

/var/log/weeklyCleanup/cleanup.log {
   nocompress
   weekly

   rotate 10

Backup to another location/mount?

$

@Neso wrote:

Hi,
I have a pretty straight forward problem: my backups are 20+ GB, if I try to restore one of them, it gets copied to another "tmp" location and then unpacked and that takes a lot of space, space that I don't have and I get an error in the middle of unpacking, saying that there is no space left :frowning:

The simplest solution I could think of was mounting an external nfs share or whatever and just moving my backups there and using a symlink but that didn't work, after I started the app there backup page showed no backups (I checked the permissions, they were correct).

My question: is there a way to make it work with a network share and a symlink or some other way? :slight_smile:

Best regards,
Neso

User Trust Levels - Definitive Guide?

@RobMeade wrote:

Hi all,

I just wanted to ask whether this post;

which looks like a fairly definitive guide to the user trust levels is still accurate. I say that aiming not to be scathing and appreciating I may be on the receiving end of some harsh emoji... but I had a quick look at the update history on it and it looks like mid 2015 were the last updates.

I know that each hosted solution can reconfigure these, so our own may be slightly different, but it's useful to have some form of reference that I can access.

If this isn't the definitive guide or a more recently updated version exists, can someone point me to it please :slight_smile:

Many thanks in advance

Hello

I'm wondering if there is a way of returning the number of accepted answers given by each user (through the official Solved plugin ) and display it as a new column on /users ?

Also is there a way to display the total number of accepted answers as a new line of Site Stratistics on /about ?

Thanks

Discourse - firmly my favourite forum platform!

@AstonJ wrote:

Recently I been spending quite a bit of time on a forum that is running different forum software... and I found it to be quite irritating!

  • Having to scroll all the way back up to the top to go elsewhere
  • Having to scroll all the way back up to the top to check the next notification
  • Notifications not being marked as read when you visit the topic of notification
  • Slow/sluggish speed

As you know DC doesn't suffer with the above and generally, it's just a much nicer experience being on a DC forum than it is on one of its competitors. So well done the DC Team, I know I've said it before but no harm repeating myself :grinning:

The only thing that's lacking (or preventing me switching some of my other forums) is easa-of-porting from other platforms (import scripts), and being able to customise to the same extent as other platforms (though I appreciate not many people customise to that extent, i.e. to power other sections of a site).

Hi All,

I've noticed this for a while, but not sure how long, but the Gmail iOS App hides the 'Visit Topic' button on email notifications ... so there's no way to get to the Discourse install.

(Well you can if you know to press the 3 dots where the signature normally is in the first reply)

It seems to think it's part of the signature or something. I know nothing about email communication standards, but is there a way around this at all?
